Cronjob / .rb help clearing session table (new to cronjobs)
I just launched my first ROR app and i need to implement the session
database cleanup. I am new to cronjobs. I have used one once but it
was all copy/paste.
I was hoping someone knew of a good tutorial or resource to get started
here or might be able to give me a little help.
I have seen a lot of posts that reference setting a cron job to clear
old sessions but I am not clear on:
Can you

Comparing polymorphic property to same object fails
I''ve got a polymorphic association on one table. I assign to it in the
controller.
This is handling invitations of users to tasks in a task management
application. If the user issuing the invitation is the user being
invited (ie the user assigned themselves to a task), I want to
activate the invitation immediately in the model.
The trouble is that this:
if self.assignable ==

resource api docs not working for me
Hi,
ruby 1.8.4, rails 2.2.2, mongrel 1.5.1, win xp
I read in the docs that this :
map.resources :articles do |article|
article.resources :comments
end
should result in this lot:
article_comments_url(@article)
article_comment_url(@article, @comment)
article_comments_url(:article_id => @article)
article_comment_url(:article_id => @article, :id => @comment)
So when I did

Temporary Model Data
I am trying to optimize some methods in my model so they don''t repeat
CPU intensive algorithms every time I call the method in the same
request/response cycle.
Eg.
================
def invitations
all_pgm_updates.find_all do |update|
update.invited?
end
end

I want to do something like:

def invitations
if @invitations.nil?

Multiple "has" in ActiveRecord
Please excuse a newbie question, but I couldn''t find anything by
searching the archives.
What I want to know is how to have multiple references to the same
class/table within a class. For example, let''s say I have a table called
People:
create table people (
id serial8 primary key
,name);
which just holds a list of the people in the database. Then I have

why doesn't this work (setting attribute in "before_create")
Hi,
Can anyone spot why the below doesn''t work?
* I have a "created_by" column in my create table in the dB
* I have a "before_create" line, which definitely gets called
* I tried a few different ways to set the "created_by" attribute in the
model but it doesn''t seem to work, i.e. doesn''t appear in the database

Rails Naming Conventions
DB field names:
If I have a table that references 2 or more separate users from my users
table, is there a recommended naming convention for this situation? In
my case, I have 3 users associated with a record in my projects table:
requester_user_id
created_by
updated_by
I could name one of them "user_id", and then projects.user would work I
guess, but wouldn''t work

Destroy, dependent and performance
Hi!
This is my first post in this forum. I''m learning RoR for two weeks and
I''m very interested about how to improve this framework.
I was testing one app I''m working in and I had some problems with
destroying.
The code is simple (and maybe wrong, as I said i''m just learning!). When
you destroy a league, you send a message to all the users associated to

help me understand association attributes
I have a model with a belongs_to association. The first model is called
Thing and the associated model is User. I''m attempting to assign the user to
the thing.
To accomplish this I used a before_save method, like this:
class Thing < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :created_by, :class_name => "User", :foreign_key =>
"created_by_user_id"
def before_create

I just found out that I have 49 invitations for Gmail (gmail.google.com).
I have been using it now for a while and is really nice. Don't forget

I will invite those who respond to this mail by FIFO.

Validating a required relationship.
Hello,
I''m not sure if I''m missing something blindingly obvious here.
All the relationships that Rails comes with assume 0..n, yes? It''s
not a strict 1 to 1 or 1 to n because it''s optional. My question is
this -
What is the best way to implement a required relationship?
For example, if I require that a comment is made by a user (a user

best way to add "created_by" entries to all tables???
Hi,
I want to automate somewhat the addition of created_by/updated_by fields
on my models (i.e. to include username). What''s the best/recommended
way to do this? Would it be to:
a) Find out how to extend the ActiveRecord::Base itself (I haven''t
extended a class before yet)
b) Use a plugin type approach where you have to add a tag manually to
each model file which then
