Changed PDC IP, all hell broke lose
I had to move my RedHat 5 box acting as a PDC to a new IP address. It is
running samba 3.5.10. After the move, none of my windows or linux samba
clients worked anymore. I tried rejoining some to the domain, but would
get error

Phantom competing domain master browser
My FC 2 server with Samba 3.0.10 had been working fine before I removed
the second NIC I had installed. Since that time I have been unable to
convince Samba that it is the domain master browser; it continues to
find an existing master browser at the IP address for the now
non-existent NIC. I have searched to remove all references to the old
IP address from configuration files, but have found

"Phanton" domain controller problem...
Hi,
Recently I reinstalled the OS on my Samba PDC, letting Linux FC3 installer
do it's thing then overwriting the smb.conf with my old one.
Now I find that although it tries but can't become Domain master browser
again, although it is happy to become a local master, a login server and to
serve files. The reason given in the log files is that there is another PDC

Problems with nmbd (samba 3.0.10)
Hi,
I've installed a samba 3.0.10 (configured with --enable-cups,
--withsmbmount, --with-acl-support) on a standard SUSE Linux
9.2-Distribution with Kernel 2.6.8-24.10-smp.
The Samba-Server works as PDC since a month now and does it fine. But
one big problem still exists:
After about 10-20 hours after the start of smb+nmb the nmbd stops working.
The symtoms are:

nmbd log error - register_name_response rejected?
Hello all,
I'm in the process of moving over my Samba server (using LDAP). I
believe everything is functioning correctly, except for this error I get
when nmbd starts. Looking back at my old server, it was apparently
doing this as well... so it may not even affect needed functionality.
Still, I'd like to figure out why it's happening! If anyone has an
idea, please let me

NMBD unresponsive
Hi there,
I have found a problem with my Samba server 3.0.28. This problem appeared suddenly without
any changes in configuration or server update.
NMBD becomes unresponsive in some minutes after startup with these options enabled:
name resolve order = wins lmhosts hosts
wins server = 172.25.8.86 172.25.8.84
Unresponsive means that it is not possible to connect to server,

Samba's log file is /var/log/samba...
How can I disable logging to syslog?
Thanks!

XP pro winning election on domain
Hi all,
Today our domain went down. When looking in the log it appears that a
windowsXPpro machine won the election. The domain controller has an
OSlevel of 65 (3.0.14a).
Restarting the smb process (/etc/init.d) resolved the problem.
How is it possible that the XP machine was able to win the election ?
After the election the XP machine (of course) failed to become the
master browser. But why

Failed to connect NT workstation to Samba2.0alpha8
Hi Folks,
I downloaded Samba2.0alpha8 from Samba site. Compiled it and installed it
on the Solaris 2.6 unix box.
I set up domain logon for both Windows 98 clients and WinNT. There is no
problem logging on from
Windows98 and the shares are all working alright. Then, I followed Samba
NTDOM FAQ and add
the NT workstation name into /etc/passwd and smbpasswd (using smbpasswd -a

nmbd Problem
Hello,
I am using samba 2.0.4b on Linux 2.0.36.
Since I changed some of the parameters in my smb.conf I have a very strange
Problem. Everytime my Samba-Box wins the browselist election process two
nmbds are started and my WinXX-Clients do not get access to samba (I could
see the server but not access the shares nor login to the domain).
smbclient -L server from server works fine. From another

Cannot login to PDC(FreeBSD boxen) from client(win XP)
I'm finally getting somewhere in setting up my FreeBSD PDC. I try and
login via my XP client and now it gives me this odd message. "Cannot
login because a duplicate user already exists on the network. Please
goto control panel and system and change your computer name." Sorta
paraphrased there, perhaps off by a word or two but that's pretty much
what it tells me. I'm just

I am so frustrated - Samba ports not opening and no error message
Okay - I've been plugging away and it got to the point that running
smbclient was returning information about an Alfresco install that I
never used, so I went ahead and deleted everything I could find on my
machine that said "alfresco". I then removed samba using apt-get from
the machine by typing
apt-get remove --purge samba
I deleted the /etc/samba directory and re-installed

Samba as a DC w/ Win98 Clients :: "Incorrect Parameter"
Hi,
I'm running samba 2.2.5 on linux, with Win98 clients using it as a logon
server. Whenver I try to log onto the TEST domain, I get a very instant
"Incorrect Parameter" msg from Windows. Client IP 141.97.52.12 with the
samba box being 141.97.52.249. I think my smb.conf looks ok:
