nm-applet, wirless, and CentOS 6
I have a strange problem and I know I am doing things way outside of the box.
First of all I don't like Gnome or really any of the mess-windows flavored
desktop systems and no, I don't like the MacOSX flavored desktop systems (like
Ubuntu's Unity) either. The 'desktop' system (if you could have called it
that) that I learned on was DEC's 'DecWindows' system on

Alert icon for yum
Hi all. I have a simple question: CentOS relies mostly on "yum" to
keep systems up to date, although I understand that like on RHEL,
"up2date" is also available. On my system I've run both KDE and GNOME
as Graphical Desktops under X (though I presently run GNOME), and I've
noticed that there is an applet called "CentOS Network Alert Icon" (from

Swap memory: I can't reconcile this stuff.
I need to look more into it, but before I start the long and arduous
"googling my life away" process, I figured someone might know the
answer. I've read the man pages several times and they didn't change!
:-(
As normal, while looking at one thing, something else bites my butt. I
tuned on the swap field in top and sort on it. Here's an edited snippet
of the results.

Gnome Notification Applet
I tried out Scientific Linux 6 Live to see (basically) what I can
expect with CentOS 6 and was pleased to find that everything looks
pretty familiar and is easily customizable to make it look and feel
like 5.6 -- except for one thing that I also noticed in Ubuntu's
newest beta (my Dad uses Linux Mint). For whatever reason, Gnome has
decided to put the Volume Control and Network Manager in the

Troubles with NetworkManager
NetworkManager used to work fine for me but during the last few
installations its a big hurdle in the wireless connectivity.
I'm using Madwifi and its interface is correctly listed and working but I
cannot connect to any wifi AP without NetworkManager. I've two interfaces:
eth0 and wifi0. Starting NetworkManager doesn't show any notification icon
in the top right in gnome and I believe

Xvnc from tightvnc crashing
Hi all,
I am having issues with running tightvnc-server on a CentOS 5.1 x86_64
machine (currently up-to-date, kernel 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5).
Occasionally, the Xvnc instance will just crash, taking with it
everything that I was running. When it crashes, it seems to do so
when I try to open some GUI program. So, for instance, I click on a
shortcut to open a program, and poof, it crashes. But it does

Gnome Desktop Questions?
I have a couple of oddities that I hope someone here can clarify for me.
OS = CentOS-5.2 all updates applied to date.
1. On the gnome desktop in the top panel (or menu bar) I have an icon for
"System Monitor" which runs the application "gnome-system-monitor". On my
other desktop CentOS-5.2 system I have the same thing. However, one one
system the icon gives me a real time

Wine and Gnome menus...
Hi all,
I've spent several days tinkering with Wine and have uncovered what seems to be a mess: Menus in Gnome for Wine applications...
I'm running Debian 4.0 (Etch) with a few backports, and Gnome 2.14.3.
I've progressed from the version of Wine that's in the Etch repositories, 0.9.25-2.1, through the one in backports, 1.0-rc1-1, to the current 1.1.1 from the WineHQ

ExitThread won't.
Okay, so with complete lack of any other ideas, I tried to
figure out what was wrong with my app (Proxomitron), which
is leaving unkillable processes around.
So I went into ExitThread, and added something like:
DPRINTF("%08lx:Exiting thread...(%d)\n", GetCurrentThreadId(),getpid());
exit(code);
right at the top of the function.
And, lo and behold, the processId matches the

Installing a gnome-desktop on CENTOS-6.3 following minimal system install.
I am still trying without much success to get a desktop on my minimal
+ virtualization install of a CentOS-6.3 kvm host. When I run startx
I get a desktop but other than the icons for computer, home and trash
there is nothing displayed. I can right click the mouse and from
there I can open a terminal window and creat a folder on the desktop
but I have no title bar and no status bar. There are

SSHMenu (Gnome Applet) for CentOS 6
Hello,
I know that there exists a package for Gnome SSHMenuApplet for CentOS 5
(e.g. see
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/epel/testing/5/ppc/gnome-applet-sshmenu-3.15-5.el5.noarch.html).
The package sshmenu (which I found here:

Forward-Compatibility with Ubuntu 11.04 (10.10 Netbook) plus
After testing some wine apps on Ubuntu 11.04 A2 today, and using 10.10 NE in previous weeks, I've notice a few issues that may hinder the use of Wine on this OS. These are mostly aesthetic and ease of use, but are worth noting in any case.
1: Removal of Notification Area/System Tray
For those who aren't aware, 11.04 and 10.10N used the new Unity interface, instead of the legacy GNOME GUI.

sluggish updating of gnome mail-notification?
Sorry if this is a repeat query.
I am running dovecot 1.0.2 under NetBSD/i386 (3.1 and 4.0ish). I use
maildirs, and deliver into them with procmail. For clients I use Gnus
(CVS head) mostly and thunderbird, and also the gnome mail-notification
status applet (4.0).
Gnus fixed a bug in the last few months where exiting a group didn't
unselect the folder and thus didn't necessarily push
