Lilo for CentOS 5?
Does there exist a version of Lilo built for x86_64 CentOS 5? It does not
seem to be on the DVD. *I* really, really, prefer Lilo over Grub.

Laptop hd incorrect
Hello
I'm new to linux and am trying to install centos 5.3 on my laptop and it has an ata drive but centos does not see the had or cdrom. Googleing does not give me much to check. The laptop is a hp-g60 249wm, latest bios update. The bios does not have any ability to change drive information. The bios basically allows me to only set time, date and boot item. Any advice or direction is

Weird CentOS 5.3 problem
I reimaged a compute node on our cluster with the latest 5.3 updates (we
were previously running 5.2), but we kept the kernel at 2.6.18-92.1.10.el5
until I can find time to rebuild some of our kernel modules. After the
image install finishes and the system reboots, the eth0 ethernet interface
disappears. If I do an ifconfig ?a, I see what should be eth0, but it?s
listed as __tmp2081258173.

slugishness
Hi all,
I have a 3G AM2 quad core CPU... x86_64 centos 5.3
When I am doing backing up to my external USB drive
my system becomes sluggish. Clicking on a thunderbird compose
takes some time to pop up the window. Typeing doesnt keep up etc...
Is there something I can change so this backup doesnt slow my system
down so much? I dont see HOW it can be taking so much CPU.

rpm question
When I install some RPMS like openoffice 3 on centos x85_64
is there some command that will leave all the actual files alone (leave
them installed)
but just remove the RPM name from the RPM database so centos now things
the packages are not installed?
Reason is I was wanting to do this so a next yum update does not get all
confused...
and the yum update happens just like I never installed

Need Broadcom 4311 firmware for CentOS 5
Any hope of getting my laptop's Broadcom BCM94311 wireless running
on CentOS 5? I find lots of references to using fwcutter to get
the needed firmware from Windows drivers, but there's a Catch-22:
Version of fwcutter that generate files for the bcm43xx driver
in CentOS 5 don't recognize the md5sum of any currently
    available Windows driver.
    Newer versions of fwcutter

Question about the ahci kernel module: missing in the CentOS (4) Plus kernel
Is there some reason the ahci kernel module is *missing* from the
2.6.9-89.0.16.plus.c4 kernel? It is in the standard 2.6.9-89.0.16.EL
kernel. Is this due to an oversight or is there some sort of conflict?
I wanted to add IEEE1394 support to my system running CentOS 4.8. I
*looks* like what I need to do is download the kernel SRPM and patch the
config to include the IEEE1394 modules and

CentOS/RHEL's build of firefox hardwired to evolution -- how to change this
For some awful reason (can someone explain why?), the RHEL/CentOS build
of firefox is hardwired to use evolution as its mailto client. With FF
2.<mumble> this was fixable with an about:config setting. With
3.0.<mumble>, it seems not. What is the proper way of fixing this?
*I* ended up doing a 'sudo rpm -e evolution' and then doing a
'sudo ln -s

CentOS on Acer Laptop
I have very basic question:
I have downloaded *CentOS-5.3-i386-LiveCD* from CentOS website. Now I need
to install it on my Acer Laptop permanently not as a liveCD. How do I burn
it to a DVD to be able to install it by simply restarting my laptop?
Thank you,
Sam

486 custom kernel
Hi all,
Is it possible to take the 686 CentOS 5, install that in virtual machine,
install a custom kernel that is the 486 flavor, take that image and
put it on a 8G CF card - insert that into a small form factor 486 class
machine and have that work?
I am hoping the extra instructions in a 686 (MMX, SEE etc) are not used
by any libraries
that I would be using (just standard stuff) and the new

New administrator and upgrading systems
Hi there folks. I've been watching the never ending "CentOS 5.4 OMG
WHEN?" threads for the last few days / weeks and had a question. I'm
pretty new to anything rpm based. I used Red Hat 9 back in college,
but that's about it. Currently, I do have a few Cent OS servers and
we're slowly migrating from Debian to CentOS for various reasons.
Since 5.3 - 5.4 is going to be

cups / cli stopped print jobs problem
On occasion, we get a printer that becomes disabled, and jobs begin to
queue up. When the issue is resolved, we re-enable the printer and
usually all the jobs print out.
However, sometimes the first job never prints, but the others do. The
cups interface shows the job is stopped. IfI restart the job in the cups
interface, it prints.

Is there a way to determine, via the command line, if a

[off-topic] Question about csh.
Hi
I received this request from a user and could not find the solution. I
would like to know if someone already solved this:
"At the command prompt I used to be able to type the first letter of a
line command and then by using the up arrow key, scroll through all of
the line commands, that begin with that letter, that I had previously
executed."
It's a machine with CentOS-5.3,

Removable drive configuration
I have a box running CentOS 5.3 with two Dataport removable drive bays
installed on the second IDE interface (/dev/hdc and hdd). I want to
configure it so I can plug in and mount various drives at different
times, including different size drives. So far it will only recognize
the first drive I plug in, and only if I boot the box after inserting
the drive.
Is there any way to set it up so I

Has anyone seen output like this before? Notice on my /dev/md0 That it

non-threaded perl no longer in .spec file
Hello,
I'm setting up a new server on 5.4 and noticed this in the perl.spec file:
* Mon Jul 21 2008 Stepan Kasal - 4:5.8.8-14.el5
- add two patches, which...
- Resolves: #435505, #431041
- remove %%define threading, the non-threading variant is not supported,
  Related: 435376
That comment wasn't there when I set up a server on 5.2 a few months
back and the %define threading option

Intel Graphics support in future releases
Since my computers use built-in Intel graphics chips (which work great
with CentOS 5.3), I've been worrying about Ubuntu's (and other
"cutting edge" distributions) problems with these. It appears to be an
Xorg problem. What I don't understand is why Xorg would release
something that only half worked with a large segment of the computers
out there. I'm also wondering how

Adaptec SCSI Card 2930LP supported by CentOS 5.x?
Hi,
for a specific application we need a low-profile SCSI card (PCI) with
external 50pin connector. I thought about getting an "Adaptec SCSI Card
2930LP". However I was not able to find any usable information about
wether this card is supported by Linux/CentOS 5.x or not. Does anyone
have this card working with a CentOS 5.x machine?
Alternatively: Are there any linux-supported
