Special ruby language for describing sql conditions
I was brainstorming today about a smooth way to define conditions in an sql query, when the numbers of attributes increase, so does the uglyness. So instead of passing a hash, I thought you could specify the conditions directly in code. I hacked together some example code which actually turned out to work. The result is concise and pretty beutiful. def search(params) Ad.find(:all) do

Another HABTM Question
Hi there, I have a question on what would be the best way to save a HABTM model. A posting habtm categories, and a category habtm postings. class Category < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :postings end class Posting < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :categories end In my blog_controller, where the actual posting is saved, is where I think I''m

adding habtm through migrations

Furthermore, I want to set up a many2many relationship between the mentioned models. the problem is that I do not know how to set the primary key in the categories_products table. this is what I''ve got in my migration file: create_table :categories do |t| t.column :name,

self-referential habtm: why are my keys null?
I''m trying to set up a directional self-referential HABTM to represent an arbitrary semi-hierarchical structure; it works for any data prepopulated into the db, but when I try to create a new relationship, I just get NULLs in both key columns (or 0''s if I turn on the no-null constraint). Here are the migrations: class CreateNodes < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up

has_and_belongs_to_many find
Say I have a post model that has_and_belongs_to_many :categories, and a category model that has_and_belongs_to_many :posts. So I have a categories_posts table to do the join. That''s all find and dandy. However I want to be able to find all the posts that belong to a specific category. I tried Post.find_by_category(:id) but that doesn''t work. Does anyone have any insight?

HABTM using two columns
Hi all, I was wondering whether anyone could guide me to docu and code examples how to create and use a has_and_belongs_to_many relationship with a joining table where TWO columns are used to identify the relation to TWO alternative tables. Example: table 1: mothers [mother_id, name] table 2: fathers [father_id, name] table 3: children [child_id, name] joining table 4: children_parent

habtm and multiple-option select boxes
I''ve got a fairly basic has_and_belongs_to_many setup, with a Business model and a Category model. In the admin functionality for the Business, I''d like to have a multiple select box showing all of the Categories, with included ones selected, etc. I''m stumped as to how to do it, though - it seems like there should be an easy way, but I''m missing it looking

select helper question
Hi there, I try to develop a medical application using ruby on rails. There are many categories which can contain subcategories. I defined the model like this: class Category < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :notes belongs_to :parent_category, :class_name=>"Category", :foreign_key=>"category_id" has_many :sub_categories,

acts_as_tree and traversing parent/child relationships
I am working on an Rails application that uses a pretty complex category structure through out the site. Unable to delete post in sample blog application
Hi All, I am new to RoR and I am writing a small blog application. I have added a Destroy / Delete link to the post index, but when I click this delete link the show action is fired. Has many through join table issues
I''m trying to wrap my caffeine soaked brain around has_many :through following along at: http://rails.techno-weenie.net/tip/2005/12/23/teaching_your_blog_model_new_tricks_with_has_many_through I think my models are a little more complex than what fits this narrative. I have a directory of members, each member can belong to multiple categories. The category table references itself

Inheriting data from one model to another
Hello I''ve been struggling with something for hours that I thought would be a simple job. Hopefully somebody can shed some light on what I''m trying to do :o) First of all I''ll explain what I''m trying to achieve. In a store application I want to have products and product variations. A product variation should inherit all of its properties from product unless

How can I test my controller via rspec for something other than response.should be_success?
1) Right now this is just testing a successful response. However, since I've gone and created a Post via FactoryGirl... how can I test the @post.id equals one of the id's being returned by the get: index json? describe Api::V1::PostsController do context 'Post' do before(:each) do @post = FactoryGirl.create(:post) end context '#index' do

Bad values for acts_as_nested_set?
I moved from acts_as_tree to acts_as_nested_set because I need the all_children method. I''ve seen an alternative way to add this method to acts_as_tree here: http://www.chuckvose.com/articles/2006/05/24/recursive-children But I''d prefer to use the more efficient way of acts_as_nested_set (and not to have to revert to my old code). Anyway, here''s my issue: if I

How do YOU read/update HABTM?
In my mind, it should work like this: <%= select ''item'', ''category_ids'', Category.find(:all).collect {|c| [c.name, c.id] }, {}, {:multiple=>true, :size=>20} %> Then Rails should automatically populate and update HABTM on that. As it is now, the above won''t work (I created a getter in item''s model that returns an array of
