Problem installing R 3.4 in Ubuntu 16.04
Hello,
I'm trying to install R version 3.4 in Ubuntu 16.04 by following the
instructions here:
https://cloud.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu/README.html
First, I added the line 'deb https://cloud.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubunutu
xenial/' to sources.list.
Next I ran the following command:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys

Getting confused with two versions of R
Hi there, I used to run R 2.10 on Ubunutu 10.04, and tried to install R 2.11 from the source at the same time.It seems that doing the second installation, I have messed up with some files or system paths, resulting in not being able to use either version of R on my system.
I get the following message in terminal, whenever I try to run R now:
/usr/local/bin/R: line 227:

When and how often are elections held for LMB?
Can someone clarify this for me? The docs are not clear. It seems that an election is held when:
* There is no LMB or the current LMB shuts down.
* A machine joins the network with "preferred master = yes" and forces an election.
Any other times when an election is held?
What's also not clear is how OFTEN the election is held. The how-to makes a passing reference that "two

Why Are Some Users' Print Jobs Always Held Pending?
CUPS Version: 1.1.23-10sarge1
I believe this to be a CUPS problem, but since it only seems to affect
users printing via Samba, perhaps it has been encountered by others here.
I have cups installed and can print to it via Linux just fine. I also
have installed via Samba (via "cupsaddsmb") and most WinXP users can
print just fine, too.
However, a few (3 of about 20) users have the

remove old wine before updating?
I am currently using wine 9.22 and am getting ready to switch to the
latest version. If I understand things right I need to remove my current
wine before installing the new one, but I do not know how to do that.
When I installed 9.22 I was very new to this and couldn't find
instructions that made sense to me so I followed the directions here:

I sent a message with the above subject:"Rsync chokes on this file", which
as a 7Mb file attached to it and got a message that the post was held in

What is the procedure for sending a file to the developers for checking?
Can I upload the file somewhere and create a link to it in my email, or

[Patch v3] btrfs: use file_remove_suid() after i_mutex is held
V2 -> V3:
set ''err'' to -ENOMEM when kmalloc() fails. Thanks to Tao.
V1 -> V2:
Move kmalloc() before mutex_lock(), suggested by Arjan.
file_remove_suid() should be called with i_mutex held,
file_update_time() too. So move them after mutex_lock().
Plus, check the return value of kmalloc().

I have a question that you may be able to help me with. I had a live block migration of a qemu-kvm guest fail (initiated via nova), in which the guest remained running on the source, but if I try to re-initiate the live migration it returns libvirtError: Timed out during operation: cannot acquire state change lock (held by monitor=remoteDispatchDomainMigratePerform3Params). Since upgrading to quantal, I find that synaptic and apt-get cannot read
the sources.list file if it includes the previously standard line

This line makes apt-get or synaptic give an error message identifying
this line as having a syntax error.

Still hitting odd problems trying to install R 3.5.2 on Debian amd64 machine
My Emails a week or so back were about installing Rstudio and the R shiny server on Debian. I was using an old Toshiba laptop as a sandbox for that and it would only install i386 (same for Ubuntu). Using the information at https://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/debian/ I did get to the point where I had R 3.5.2, Rstudio and the server on there (with some help from Dirk that is in the list archives).

Installing and maintaining R on Ubuntu 9.04 -, best practice
I had an exchange of ideas on this with Dirk E. a couple of months ago.
He can correct this if I state it wrongly, but
1) we agreed that using apt/Synaptic structure was best, but sometimes
the packages are not available
2) also that using install.packages when there is a .deb can lead to
some "confusion" (the package database on the
local system does not know about an R package

Thanks to everyone who has responded (esp. Michael, I greatly
