similar to: Steam (HL2) locks up on 64 bit Ubuntu

I've installed wine 1.1.8 after a fresh installation of ubuntu intrepid, and while steam downloads and installs properly, when I go to my games list and select a game to install wine just quits. 1.1.9 was just released a short while ago, I was hoping it would fix it, but I'm still stuck. Help please I'm kinda new to this.

I had Steam/TF2 working. Using Suse 11.1 64-bit, Nvidia card/driver, 4Gb RAM, 2.6 Intel Quad CPU. ALSA sound (pulse audio uninstalled), Windows Vista, full settings in winecfg.
