Using objects within functions in formulas
Dear all, I'm looking to create a formula within a function to pass to glmer() and I'm having a problem that the following example will illustrate: library(lme4) y1 = rnorm(10) x1 = data.frame(x11=rnorm(10), x12=rnorm(10), x13=rnorm(10)) x1 = data.matrix(x1) w1 = data.frame(w11=sample(1:3,10, replace=TRUE), w12=sample(1:3,10, replace=TRUE), w13=sample(1:3,10, replace=TRUE)) test1 <-

Alternative to extended recode sintax?
Dear R-users, I have a factor variable within my data frame which I derive week after week from a POSIXct variable using the cut(var,"weeks") command I have found in the chron package. The levels() command gives me: [1] "2009-03-30 00:00:00" "2009-04-06 00:00:00" "2009-04-13 00:00:00" "2009-04-20 00:00:00" "2009-04-27 00:00:00"

vncserver startup issue
I installed vncserver via yum and when I reboot the server it does not want to start despite being set to start upon boot. Logging in via SSH and then issuing vncserver, I am able to get it running properly. I can't seem to figure this out. Any pointers appreciated. -- <---------------------------------------------------------------> Alex Pilson FlagShip Interactive, Inc.

Australian CRAN mirror
One of the CRAN mirror links for Australia is not correct, and I'm wondering how to have it updated. Importing Data
Dear David, If you have sufficient RAM you can increase the amount R uses by adding the switch "--max-mem-size=1024M" to the command you use to start R (change 1024 to whatever amount of RAM you have). If you don't have lots of RAM, you may have to draw just a subset of data. If you're developing or testing a model this will be okay, as long as you choose enough samples.

Re: Universal legend in plot
Is your data such that it can be restructured into a form amenable to a lattice plot, such as xyplot()? In that case, the legend (key in lattice) can be placed pretty much anywhere. update.packages: Resolution
Hello R users, Thank you very much to those who responded so quickly and helpfully to my question about update.packages() and Windows 2000. I am grateful to Thomas Lumley, Jason Turner, Prof Brian D Ripley, Uwe Ligges and Andy Liaw (at least). The solution was simply to use internet2.dll rather than internet.dll. I'm sorry I didn't spot this in the documentation. Thank you again. As

Samba AD-DC in the cloud
This turns into a non-samba discussion pretty quickly - but I'll chime in. I agree with Sven - that's true. The real problem, as I see it is that the interests of the client and the vendor often don't really align - at least not in the short term. The vendor wants to do things as cheaply as possible so they make money now. You [the client] want them to provide reliable service. Yet

Changing strip widths in lattice plots
Hello R users, I'm using xyplot (lattice) to plot some data. Unfortunately, the text that goes into each strip is often too big to fit. For instance, one of the factors may be labelled "Satisfaction with waiting time" which is too wide to fit. If I use split.string() to wrap it onto two lines it is then too high to fit in the strip. I'd prefer to apply split.string on the

Fundraising for FreeBSD security development
Dear FreeBSD users, Slightly more than three years ago, I released FreeBSD Update, my first major contribution to FreeBSD. Since then, I have become a FreeBSD committer, joined the FreeBSD Security Team, released Portsnap, and become the FreeBSD Security Officer. However, as I have gone from being a graduate student at Oxford University -- busy writing my thesis -- to a researcher at Simon

Paid support for R?
Dear R users, Sorry if this has been discussed before. I was recently looking at the MySQL site and saw that they offer various levels of paid support. The support options range from basic email support (USD200) through to extensive telephone support from the development team (USD10000). These are annual prices. This is something I would be happy to see available with R (maybe it is?). My

Luke, You should be able to tell from my signature that I am a UNIX sys admin and an Oracle DBA. I hate MS as much as you do, but I have realized that they control everything, and we are going to have to live with it. I don't think anyone or thing can ever fight them. Christmas tree graphs
Hello R users, I wish to draw a type of horizontal bar chart for two groups (males and females). The values for one group will start at the y-axis and point to the left, and the values for the other group will start at the y-axis and point to the right. If you're (un)lucky, the resulting graph can assume the shape of a Christmas tree. The data are left.side <- c(107092, 113053,

Aggregate: assembling the "by" part on the fly
Dear R users, I'm having trouble using aggregate() and would greatly appreciate your advice. I am using R 1.5.1 on Windows 2000. I want to call my function in the following way extract.data(x=dat[, "Age", "Year"]) where extract.data() uses aggregate() to count the number of cases for each combination of "Age" and "Year". I've defined
