Determining Starting Values for Model Parameters in Nonlinear Regression
The cautions people have given about starting values are worth heeding. That nlxb() does well in many cases is useful, but not foolproof. And John Fox has shown that the problem can be tackled very simply too. Determining Starting Values for Model Parameters in Nonlinear Regression
Dear friends, Hope you are all doing well and having a great weekend. I have data that was collected on specific gravity and spectrophotometer analysis for 26 mixtures of NG (nitroglycerine), TA (triacetin), and 2 NDPA (2 - nitrodiphenylamine). In the dataset, x1 = %NG, x2 = %TA, and x3 = %2 NDPA. The response variable is the specific gravity, and the rest of the variables are the predictors.

How to extract the variance componets from lme
Here is a piece of code fitting a model to a (part) of a dataset, just for illustration. I can extract the random interaction and the residual variance in group meth==1 using VarCorr, but how do I get the other residual variance? Is there any way to get the other variances in numerical form directly - it seems a litte contraintuitive to use "as.numeric" when extracting estimates,

empty files created with trellis xyplot jpeg device
New years greetings. I have been setting up a function to generate multiple jpeg charts. When the calls are issued at the interactive console, the jpeg files are generated without an issue. When I try to issue the same calls from a function, some chart files are empty. It appears to only be related to trellis charts. Any help to troubleshoot this is appreciated. Regards, -mike R version

Time Series
Hi How would I analyse time series with - different lengths (i.e. one has 9 entries and the other has 14 entries) - different frequency (i.e. dates are random - no repeated length) - multiple values for the same time entry (e.g. 2009-10-23 below) i.e. my data takes the form: 1st time series 2009-10-07 0.009378 2009-10-19 0.014790 2009-10-23 -0.005946 2009-10-23 0.009096 2009-11-08 0.004189

multi-regression with more than 50 independent variables
Hi R Users, I am going to run a multiple linear regression with around 57 independent variables. Each time I run the model with just 11 variables, the results are reasonable. With increasing the number of independent variables more than 11, the coefficients will get ?NA? in the output. Is there any limitation for the number of independent variables in multiple linear regressions in R? I attached

conflict between Realtek 8139 (client) and 3c2000T (server) NIC's with Samba? - solved
hi, Problem seems to be solved. I could kick myself for not trying the obvious first: updating the drivers for the Realtek card by downloading the latest from their site: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads1-3.aspx?series=16&Software=True The problem seems to be solved. thanks for the fast response. cheers, Bart van Dicjk

limiting and sharing over multiple nic's
Hi, This type of problem has been asked before but I didn''t see any answers. I have adsl at home, with a 512/8Kbit down/up-stream, and I divided the downstream on my gateay over 3 interfaces, but the problem is that you can''t borrow unused bandwith from other interfaces. IAX Binding to 2 nic's for trunking two asterisk servers
I have a problem in that when you use IAX2 for trunking and have 2 nics one is used to connect directly to 2nd Asterisk server how do we get the outside Nic card to take IAX connections? Is there any way to get this working via two paths? There is only one bindipaddr=10.1.1.1 for internal trunk but outside address section? -----------------------------------------------------------------

Fw: TDMoE over bonded NIC's
I am planning to configure * box A with PSTN interface to route faxes to * box B (running spandsp) over TDMoE. I am using 2xGb bonded NIC's for connection between servers. Was wondering - does anybody have experience with TDMoE over bonded interface - ie. does it work ok?. - does anybody have feedback using this scenario for fax? another question, perhaps someone knows what's the

Hi I cant start a hvm domU with more than 3 nic's configured... why? it is a bug? It seems to be a problem with kernel... Building a basic router with two nic's
I need help setting up a basic routing between two nic's on my CentOS desktop. I thought I'd understood the basics, but ... I don,t want a nat router, just packets forwarded back and fort. This is what I thought would do the trick, but didn't. Can someone please give me some pointers or links so I can get this right. # echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward # route

tc seems to have no effect on the NIC's
Hello all, We have installed this network testing environment: https://github.com/facebook/augmented-traffic-control which seems pretty nice overall. It allows you to artificially degrade your network performance by issuing tc commands to directly affect your networking. I have it set up on two CentOS 6 machines - one a Dell server, one a VirtualBox VM. The tc syntax seems OK, it seems to all
