A warning in gzcon but not in gzfile
Hi all, I used `gzfile` and `gzcon` to read a compressed file but I found that `gzcon` gave me a different result than `gzfile`. It seems like the `gzcon` does not handle the data correctly. I have posted an example below. In the example, a portion of a compressed file is downloaded from Google Cloud as a raw vector, and the data is saved into a temp file. If I use ` gzfile` to read the file, it

capture.output(): Using a rawConnection() [linear] instead of textConnection() [exponential]?
I've noticed that the processing time for the default capture.output() grows exponentially in the number of characters outputted/captured. The default settings sinks to a temporary textConnection(). When instead sinking to a rawConnection(), the processing time becomes linear. See below example and attached PNG figure [also at

Updated rawConnection() patch
Here's an update of my rawConnection() implementation. In addition to providing a raw version of textConnection(), this fixes two existing issues with textConnection(): one is that the current textConnection() implementation carries around unprotected SEXP pointers, the other is a performance problem due to prolific copying of the output buffer as output is accumulated line by line. Feature request: copy attributes in gzcon
The `gzcon` function both modifies and copies a connection object: # compressed text con1 <- url("http://www.stats.ox.ac.uk/pub/datasets/csb/ch12.dat.gz") con2 <- gzcon(con1) # almost indistinguishable con1==con2 identical(summary(con2), summary(con1)) # both support gzip readLines(con1, n = 3) readLines(con2, n = 3) # opening one opens both isOpen(con2)

long vector support
All, At first glance, a recent commit to R-devel ( https://github.com/wch/r-source/commit/2c182014ecc8c2407a89092c9162d86046bd18da) appears to be related to long vector support. But as Henrik Bengtsson points out at https://github.com/HenrikBengtsson/Wishlist-for-R/issues/97#issuecomment-562659134, writeBin() still prohibits long vectors. Are there any plans to add long vector support to R

is gzcon w/ urls not implemented or used differently on linux?
I wrote some code which reads a gzipped text file directly from the web with gzcon(url()) and it works perfectly on OSX, but I cannot get it to work on linux at all, trying several different R versions and linux distributions. Any ideas? Here's an example of my code: z <- gzcon(url("ftp://ftp-private.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubchem/.fetch/8897497837079742771.sdf.gz")) sdf <-

Raw data type transformations
Not sure if this belongs here or on the devel list: I've needed a more efficient way to manipulate raw binary data in R, with more than the minimal raw transformation functions in the base package. So I've written a small package in C that effectively lets me cast back and forth between raw vectors and other data types. I've implemented four functions: rawToHex, hexToRaw, readRaw,

R 2.8.0 is released
I've rolled up R-2.8.0.tar.gz a short while ago. This is a development release which contains a number of new features. Also, a number of mostly minor bugs have been fixed. See the full list of changes below. You can get it (later today) from http://cran.r-project.org/src/base/R-2/R-2.8.0.tar.gz or wait for it to be mirrored at a CRAN site nearer to you. In case of impatience, try

2.3.1: interacting bugs in load() and gzfile() (PR#9271)
Hello, If repeated calls are made to save() using the same pre-opened gzfile connection to a file, and then the connection is closed, the objects saved by the second and subsequent calls are not correctly restored by repeated calls to load() with a new gzfile connection to the same file. What follows are a session exposing the bugs, analysis (see ANALYSIS), patches (see PATCHES), and a session

Better cleanup of example session during check
I have a couple of packages (?fiery? and ?reqres') that uses a mock of a rook request for their examples. The mock is an R6 object containing a rawConnection, along with a finalizer that closes this connection when the object is removed. So far so good. I?ve recently been getting CRAN errors due to the rawConnection not being closed in examples > cleanEx() Error: connections left open:

R 3.6.2 is released
Hi. Under R-news there is an entry for 3.6.2 patched regarding LAPACK. However, when uncompresding the current R-patched, it creates R-Rc directories. Is this a naming oversight or is the patched version actually the unadjusted release candidate? Thank you, Avi On Thu, Dec 12, 2019 at 4:58 AM Peter Dalgaard via R-devel < r-devel at r-project.org> wrote: > The build system rolled up

Compress string memCompress/Decompress
Hello, I would like to compress a long string (character vector), store the compressed string in the text field of a SQLite database (using RSQLite), and then load the text back into memory and decompress it back into the the original string. My character vector can be compressed considerably using standard gzip/bzip2 compression. In theory it should be much faster for me to compress/decompress

R 3.6.2 is released
Thank you. I apologize for not providing the link. [1] Under the news for R-revel there is a single entry for R 3.6.2-patched. The file I downloaded was [2] with a date of 2019-12-12 01:50. Is it safe to say that 3.6.2 has the LAPACK upgrades and fixes? Apologies in advance if iOS links the URL below. I cannot access gmail desktop from behind my corporate firewall. Thank you again, Avi [1]
