interesting note - not sure just how to take care of this one
Hello all,
the dovecot -> ldap connection is working correctly but I notice
something in my maillog that is disturbing:
dovecot.conf in the passdb section I have
passdb passwd {
}
then it drops down into the ldap stuff.
The user gets validated via this first and if it fails passes on to the
ldap stuff.
the problem is:
in the file the user's unencrypted password is showing up as

question about dovecot imap outlook clients
Hello,
Well... thanks to the input of all of you I have my dovecot->ldap
connection working for almost all of my clients, however...
on outlook, a message for certificates being trusted comes up, the user
clicks yes and connection fails.
Questions:
Do I have to get an ssl certificate to make it work? ( cost ouch!)
Is there a way around this using my own self-signed certificates?
Is there

"DNS update failed" during ads join
I received the warning "DNS updated failed!" during net join. Is this
an important warning? Will there be problems?
Immediately after the join, clients using smbclient were able to
authenticate and access shares on this server - even though "net ads
testjoin" complained about kerberos problems.

Strange behaviour in plot and points?
Hello R-users
I was puzzled by some strange results of an analysis and I found out what is
for me a strange behaviour (I won't dare to say a bug) in both plot and
points (and I suspect lines and other kind of lower level plots). If you try
the following code:
> data<-data.frame(dummy1=c(1:10),dummy2=c(1:10))
> plot(data$dummy1,data$dummy3)
A plot of the values of dummy1 against

Next Record
Okay, I know this will probably be a very easy question. But I am
discovering that RonR makes just about everything easy. The problem is,
it takes me a few hours to figure out that I can do it the easy way.
I need to know how to move to the next record in a database. I want to
format my out put in a table. For example, I want a 3 by 3 table. So
record one goes in the first cell, record

gamm in mgcv random effect significance
Dear R-helpers,
I'd like to understand how to test the statistical significance of a
random effect in gamm. I am using gamm because I want to test a model
with an AR(1) error structure, and it is my understanding neither gam
nor gamm4 will do the latter.
The data set includes nine short interrupted time series (single case
designs in education, sometimes called N-of-1 trials in medicine)

edf's higher than 1
Simon, in your recent reply to me, you noted that EDF=1 corresponds to a
straight line fit. Does the edf always indicate the polynomial exponent
directly? We ask because Hothorn and Everitt said "Roughly, the
complexity of a cubic spline is about the same as a polynomial of degree
one less than the degrees of freedom." Sorry we attributed the latter to
you, by the way. Will

mgcv gam modeling trend variation over cases
Dear R-Helpers,
I posted two days ago on testing significance of random effects in mgcv,
but realize I did not make my overall purpose clear. I have a series of
N short time series, where N might range from 3-10 and short means a
median of 20 time points. The sample data below (PCP) has N = 4 cases
with 9, 13, 16 and 16 observations over time respectively. The data set
contains four

un-install R 1.6 built from source
I have installed R 1.6 for Linux from source, but unfortunately, I didn't
check if the Xwindow headers were available, so I have installed it without
Xwindows capabilities. Thus, I want to uninstall it and install it again
properly with the required features, but I don't know how to uninstall R when
built from source. I would appreciate any help on this. Thanks very much in
advance!

curve comparison
Dear R users,
I have seven regression lines I´d like to compare, in order to find out if
these are significatively different. The main problem is that these are
curves, non normal, non homogeneous data, I´ve tried to linearize them but
it has not worked. So I´d like to know if you know any command or source in
R which explains how to perform this kind of comparison.
Thanks in advance for your

write fixed format
Dear R users;
Is there a function in R that I can put "text" with proper alignments in
a fixed format. For instance, if I have three fields: A, B and C, where
both A and C are text with 3 characters and left alignment; B is a
numeric one with 2 decimals and 3 integer space digits. How can I put
the following row in a file? (note there is a space between a and 2, and
after b.)

I'm excited and pleased to announce that the weightr package was
released to CRAN today:

Our package provides a function for meta-analysts to implement the

Lme4 Package Help!
Hello, all!
So, as stated in the title, the Lme4 package used to output p-values for the
fixed effects. What happened?!
Literally 2 weeks ago, I ran code, got output with no errors, and had
p-values listed for my fixed effects.
Now, running THE SAME CODE with THE SAME DATASET (nothing at all has
changed, not the data, not my computer, not R, nothing), I do not get
p-values.
I've tried
