Expiring items
In my database I have a products table that has a bunch of attributes (title, description, etc) including one for date_expires. Is there a best practices method to get the database to erase the expired items? Is that done outside RoR via Cron or something? Else is it better to just have my app filter out anything that is expired but still keep those records in my dbase? -- Posted via

Passing quantity in a shopping cart
I am using this line on my index.rhtml page to capture the quantity required of a particular item for a basic shopping cart app: <%= text_field ''line_item'', ''quantity'', {:size=>3} %> </td> but my next screen (a cart screen) doesn''t reflect what was entered in that text field when the item is added to the cart. That is,

Unobtrusive Javascript for Rails
I made a brief post on here the other day about this and now I can proudly present the initial release of our unobtrusive_javascript plugin for Rails. We''ll be working with Dan Webb of Vivabit to roll in much of the functionality in his own as-yet unreleased unobtrusive_javascript plugin into a single plugin. This is essentially a preview release and probably not suitable for use on a

Random routing errors in 1.1.3 with Mongrel
Since upgrading to 1.1.3 on our dev box, we''ve started to see random routing errors with our apps running under Mongrel in production mode. The errors seem to go away after a while but come back everytime we restart the server. This may be a mongrel problem, it may be a rails problem (I''ve posted a bug on the trac) and I was wondering if anybody else had had similar

Unobtrusive javascript...what if?
What if...you could produce accessible, unobtrusive javascript, using Rails built-in javascript/prototype helpers, with just one extra line of code in your layout, a plugin, and one small enhancement to the helpers. Something like this: [php] <% form_remote_tag :controller => ''foo'', :action => ''bar'', :unobtrusive => true %> # which produces

Concerns over Rails' handling of tests
Sorry if this comes across as a bunch of disjointed thoughts...I''m just trying to put my thoughts down and I''d like to know what other people''s opinions on the subject are. I''ve been working with Rails for 3 or 4 months now and I''m constantly trying to look at ways of improving my testing techniques, especially when it comes to TDD. I have a few

sudo in switchtower and security
I''m attempting to deploy a rails application using switchtower. My IT guys are refusing to give me sudo for a user changeable script. I really can''t argue with their logic. If I have sudo for a script that I can update, well, I can do most anything I want. They are suggesting I create a cgi that performs the same function. Since the cgi would run as www-data (this is a debian

Naming Convention for Controllers?
Hello! I just read DHH''s presentation pdf. In his examples, he wrote PeopleController instead of PersonController. I''ve been using singular words in controller''s name. Which is more common? Thanks. Sam -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Self-referencial habtm relationship
Heyo! I am setting up a self-referencial habtm relationship with the users of my app. I am using Chad Fowler''s "Rails Recipes" to get me started, and everything works great with the join table "people_friends". I add friends by doing somebody.friends << somebodyelse. However, with my app, there is an approval process so my join table has columns person_id,

How far can you get without learning Ruby?
This has been my little experiment for the last few weeks. I jumped straight into rails after a few tutorials and have been using "Agile Web Development with Rails" as a reference. I picked up the Ruby syntax from examples which was not hard to do as I know various other languages. I''ve started 3 database driven web apps and all was going really well. Rails is fun and

I''m trying to create a basic web page where people can register. Before they are approved they are emailed a link where that they must click in order to verify their info is correct (or at least their email).
