This is the first release of a new Ruby library for the www.bulksms.co.ukAPI which should allow simple integration of SMS functionality into your Ruby or Rails apps. Sending a message is as simple as: @service = Service.new(''username'', ''password'') @service.send_message(''This is my message!'', ''4479123456789'') # whats my account balance now? puts @service.account.credits This is my first open source release ever, so I hope somebody finds use for it. I put it together as I needed SMS functionality for another forthcoming open source Rails app called SiteSeer which can be found on Rubyforge and is due for a first release soon. -- Cheers, Luke Redpath www.lukeredpath.co.uk -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... From my understanding, 37Signals'' Backpack send sms by SMTP. The user enters their mobile number and selects their network. Backpack can then sends a simple e-mail to the SMTP gateway most mobile providers offer for free, by appending the mail url onto the mobile number. SMS gateways in the US are in flux currently. This year mobile carriers have decided to require a common short code for all commercial senders (applications, services, etc.). Most major gateway providers like, Clickatell, Simplewire and others, will require you to have a CSC to go "live" on their networks. Some pseudo-gateway providers might allow you to avoid the CSC costs by using their own CSCs. But this is not supported by the mobile carriers in the US and may prevent delivery in theory. I am awaiting the a response from support at Bulksms.com, regarding their policy on CSC requirements for transmitting on US networks. They were quick to setup my account, respond to volume discount questions, but so far appear to have been stumped by my question. I''m a little leary of choosing the wrong one.Honestly, it doesn''t matter who they use... they pretty much all provide the same thing. There''s no "wrong" choice... just look for the ones with the most applicable services and price. They will all have a SOAP/HTTP API you call to send/recieve messages. -- tim

It would certainly seem to be less complicated. -- Larry Wright http://www.approachingnormal.com http://www.welcometoparenthood.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... SMS by SMTP is good for self-managed, non-critical message delivery. In self-managed, I am referring to where the recipient is in control of their settings. With number portability, SMS by SMTP has the drawback that if a user changes networks and forgets to update their "network" setting, your message ends up in a bit bucket. It is also susceptible to typical e-mail delivery issues such as, spam filtering, speed of delivery and lack of reception confirmation. On most networks, most of the time, it is comparable to direct SMS delivery. On the other hand, direct SMS provides a range of advantages including, confirmation of reception, fast delivery, network agnostic delivery, rich content support and two-way communication. SMS gateways will let you know immediately if there is an issue with a message. No waiting for bounces, or worse, silent non-delivery of messages. I have implemented both types of SMS delivery systems, with great success. My preference is to use direct SMS delivery. This is why I am hopeful that a company like Bulksms.com will enable small projects to take advantage of the ubiquitous and robust nature of direct SMS communications. If you really want to go in deep, check out the Kannel.org. It is an open source WAP/SMS gateway project that lets you setup your own gateway. It can be complicated to setup, but potentially you could become your own gateway. Hope I didn''t ramble too much. SMS has been my bitch lover lately. ;-) -- Lon Baker http://www.speedymac.com AIM: spdemac

However not many provide a way to receive SMS via HTTP GET/POST,ie call a url on your server to notify an incoming SMS.Is there any such provider in the US or Asia? Also is Kannel an SMPP gateway?may be thats what you meant by direct SMS? Vivek -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I believe the latest version of Kannel is SMPP. When I say direct, I simply meant using an actual SMS gateway provider to deliver your message vs. sending an e-mail to the mobile phone e-mail address (SMS by SMTP). Most providers offer a range of ways to access their gateways, such as SMPP, HTTP/S, SMTP, FTP, XML, COM or Console. I have been using a console tool to access Simplewire''s gateway for a couple of years without any issue. The following companies offer two-way services, but the pricing and capabilities differ. Simplewire requires you to have a CSC. Bulk SMS includes the ability to receive replies to messages you send, or signup for a special account for dedicated reception (probably requiring a CSC). I am not sure how Clickatell works exactly.
