Request for review of STI/eager-loading patch
Hi,
Review would be appreciated on this patch which stops
find returning incorrect results when multi-level STI
models are eagerly loaded:

Can't eagerly load a polymorphic association defined in an STI parent class?
If I define an association (in my case a polymorphic one) in an STI
parent class, and try to eagerly load it in a subclass, I get the
following error:
ActiveRecord::ConfigurationError: Association name ''myassoc'' was not
found; perhaps you misspelled it?
If I redefine the same association again in the STI subclass, it
works.
Is this a bug or what?

Bi-directional self-referential HABTM
Hi,
I''m having a little trouble figuring out how to make a self-
referential HABTM bi-directional.
I have a Employee class. Each employee can have a couple of bosses,
who are also employees. The employee class has the following HABTM:
has_and_belongs_to_many :bosses, :class_name =>
"Employee", :join_table => "bosses_courses", :association_foreign_key
=>

preloading child rows just a level deeper...
hiho.
following problem.
i have 3 tables in my database with each representing an object.
lets say
A belongs_to B belongs_to C.
when i do
my_a = A.find(:all)
i can access B as my_a.b and C as my_a.b.c
thats fine but rails querys the database each time i do that
so is use
my_a = A.find(:all, :include => :b)
works fine for my_a.b but not for my_a.b.c
so i tried
my_a = A.find(:all, :include

In a find, can''t you use both :include and :limit ?
I''m trying to do a find that includes a join. It has to be a find
because I''m using the results for a Pagination, so I need to limit my
query to the number of results I want to display per page.
Here''s the type of thing I want to do:
Employee table <-> Skills_Employees table <-> Skills table
Let''s say I want to find all the employees who have

Pagination and :include (eager associations)
I have tried to use eager association with pagination, but
the :include option is not supported:
Here''s the one-line pagination call without :include
@link_pages, @links = paginate :link, :per_page => 10, :order_by
=> sort_clause
and here the work around, using the "classic" method
# @link_pages = Paginator.new self, Link.count, 10,

Polymorphic associations?
I''ve read the stuff about polymorphic associations here:
http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/UnderstandingPolymorphicAssociations
But I''m not sure what exactly they are and what their advantage is. Are
they the same as HABTM, but they''re "two-way"?

eager associations and limit/offset
Hi,
currently the eager association loading via ":include" does not work
when a has-many or habtm association is combined with offset/limit
(which is required for paginations). This is because in these cases, the
result set will contain more than one row per object, but limit/offset
works on row numbers.
I''ve developed a patch that makes this work by using 2 SQL statements

query across tables
I am trying to do things the proper rails way and use the auto generated
id to refernce other tables. Now I''ve hit a wall in trying to write a
query.
timesheets:
id, employee_id, code_id, ... values
codes:
id, job_number, code
How can I show just the timesheets that belong to a specific job?
I would need to check the codes table and look at the jobs, so I was
thinking of something

Eager loading wierdness
Consider this problem.
I have an Item that has_many Features
I want to find all Items with a Feature name of ''foo''.
Normally you would do this..
@items = Item.find(:all, :conditions=>["features.name = ?", ''foo''],
:include=>:features)
This all works fine and dandy except for this problem.
If you do this...
<% for item in @items %>

Severe STI, HABTM with Attributes and 1.1
All,
I had been working on a project that was using STI to a very high
degree. It also was using a HABTM table that had a couple extra
attributes. It seems that with 1.1 push_with_attributes is deprecated
and I am having a bit of trouble moving things to using has_many
:through
The original schema I had worked like this :
create_table "nodes" do |t|
t.column "title",

Error when Eager Loading "Not unique table/alias"
Hi list,
I get the error "Not unique table/alias" (myql 4.1) when trying eager
load 2 classes that use the same base class (not STI)
Example:
<code>
class Wedding < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :bride, :class_name => ''Person'', :foreign_key => ''bride_id''
belongs_to :groom, :class_name => ''Person'',

Patch for #3438: Eager loading doesn''t respect :order of associations
Hello all,
I still have a patch for #3438 (eager loading doesn''t respect
association orders); it passes all unit tests, and has additional unit
tests with full coverage. The patch is attached.
== The Bug ==
Author.find(1).posts != Author.find(1, :include => [:posts]).posts
if Author has_many :posts, :order => anything.
This means that either one must avoid eager loading or

Eager loading with inheritance
In order to implement inheritance (STI was not ideal), I have
implemented a solution similar to what is described in this post:
http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/73822#108686. I have one model that
acts as a parent class with shared attributes, two child models with
different attributes, and a module that contains shared functionality
for the child models.
The issue arises in creating associations

combining STI + polymorphism + rich self HABTM : how to ?
Hi all,
I need to model simple typed polymorphic relations:
''John'' [''works_for''] ''Bill''
''John'' [''speaks_for''] ''Microsoft''
''Microsoft'' [''hold_shares_of''] ''Apple''
I''m having a hard time combining :

STI and HABTM
Hey gang,
How does STI work with HABTM?
For instance...let''s say I have the following models
-----
Category < ActiveRecord::Base
Item < ActiveRecord::Base
Product < Item
Deal < Item
-----
Each product or deal can have categories. Would I then setup Item with
has_and_belongs_to_many :categories, then create a table categories_items
??? Is there a better way to do it?

how to HABTM with STI ??
Hello all
This is my first post so excuse the basic question. (and any repeats I just
got an email saying this post was too big so I have re-submitted a smaller
version)
I was following the thread on
http://lists.rubyonrails.org/pipermail/rails/2006-May/038988.html regarding
the STI on HABTM for RoR.
I have a very similar problem and was hoping for some help.

has_many :through eager loading only loading one record
Hello,
I''ve been using Rails for years, including has_many :through and eager
loading, but this one has me stumped.
The problem is that Active Record is only eager-loading the first of
many records. Here are the models (note set_table_name for a legacy
schema):
class Tag < ActiveRecord::Base
set_table_name ''tag''
end
class DishTag < Tag
has_many

STI with_scope on parent - bug or feature?
Hi,
It seems that setting a with_scope on the parent class doesn''t do anything
MyClass.with_scope(:find=>{:conditions=> ["somecol = ?", ''val'']}) do
@ext_pages, @ext_rows = paginate :my_extended_class, {
:per_page => 13
}
end
# this doesn''t generate WHERE somecol=''val''
In order for scope to work you have to call
