Dtrace Snooping
Dear dtrace Experts, I have seen some dtrace utilities like opensnoop and execsnoop etc. My interest is to write a simple script that can snoop the files which uses the 3 syscalls like open, create, unlink. I have gone through dtrace oneliners that can do the same : dtrace -n ''syscall::open*:entry { printf("%s %s",execname,copyinstr(arg0));}'' dtrace -n

dtrace missing ''unlinkat''? showing process stack?
everyone, Just out of curiosity, I did a dtrace -n ''syscall:::entry { @num[execname, probefunc] = count(); }'' and looked at the entries produced by ''rm''. I see everything that rm did, *except* the unlinkat - which is unfortunate because I want to trace which processes have deleted which files. So - does dtrace contain unlinkat as a probe for a system call?

DTrace vs truss
G''Day Folks, I''ve finally typed up my classic DTrace demo, which I use to introduce people to DTrace (I delivered this at SOSUG#1), http://www.brendangregg.com/DTrace/dtracevstruss.html Here I create a fault and show the difficulty in analysing it using previous tools. Then I compare the impact of analysing the problem using both DTrace and truss. DTrace wins (a lot!).

Truning on pid$target probes hangs Solaris
Hi: I''m running Indiana (OpenSolaris developer preview) under parallels in OS X 10.5.1. I can consistently get Solaris to hang. Doing a dtrace -n pid\$target::malloc:entry''{@=count()}'' -c ls will consistently hang Solaris. Basically doing anything with PID provider with the -c option seems to hangs Solaris. Only way to recover is to stop and start Parallels desktop.

Why does gethostbyname_r appear to leak?
I am running a very simple multithreaded program (TestThread.C) which calls gethostbyname_r in several threads. My analysis of this program with both truss and DTrace suggest that is has a small leak. However, if I alter the program to have many more threads and run for a lot longer it never runs out of memory and does not carry on growing. Can anybody explain what I am missing in my analysis or

Dtrace locks up on sol
Hi all... I''ve just got my hands on a Solaris 10 box for the first time. I''ve heard wonderous things about dtrace, so the first command I type is dtrace -l which disappointingly does nothing at all. It just hangs, and neither Ctrl-D, Ctrl-C or kill -9 from another shell will do anything to kill it. The box is: SunOS t2000 5.10 Generic_118822-25 sun4v sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-T200

dtrace script to monitor file access
A user has asked us to find out who is changing one of their files and how it is being changed. I came up with the script below: #!/usr/sbin/dtrace -s #pragma D option quiet BEGIN { printf("\n Timestamp gid uid pid ppid execname function current directory file name\n\n"); } syscall::open:entry,

Add new user -> swat core dump
Hi there, I have a problem when I try to create a new user with swat. I use binaries of Samba 2.2.2 coming from www.samba.org, or from www.sunfreeware.com on Solaris 2.6 and on 8. I compiled the sources and the result is the same. When I click on "Add New User" (Server Password Management), I receive a nearly blank page: I can only see the samba gif on top and the user is not

Analyzing java class loading with dtrace
Hi there, I am trying to diagnose a performance problem on a Sun T5120 running Solaris 10. I see general poor performance using Java and, in particular, loading classes. I have developed a simple java test that loads all of the classes in a Crystal Reports JAR file (around 7000 classes) which takes much longer on the T5120 (40 secs) than on a Core 2 Duo windows PC (5 secs). I recognise that this

tracing aio syscalls
Hi all, Is there some documentation or some example on how to interpret the arg0 .. arg<n> for the aioread, aiowrite, aiowait syscalls? The system call name for all three seems to be "kaio". Where & Why is my process sleeping a lot?
I have a program where the process seems to be sleeping a lot (waiting on something) What would be the right approach to figure out via dtrace where it is sleeping and why it is sleeping? In my current process, using truss -D shows that it reaches pollsys and the whole process sleeps for 1.5 - 1.8 seconds before it awakes again. Its the only significant process running on this two CPU

dovecotpw/sql crypt scheme core dump with rc17-19
Platform is Solaris 8 on a 280R. I'm setting up a new installation of Dovecot, and I ran into some troubles that I've partly tracked down. I setup auth/user dbs with LDAP initially, and things worked well. Passwords are stored as "{crypt}zxcv..." in LDAP. I setup SQL, and began getting this: dovecot: Jan 23 16:37:47 Error: child 8718 (auth-worker) killed with signal 11

Slow pkginstalls due to long door_calls to nscd
Hi all, I am installing a zone onto two different V445s running S10U4 and the zones are taking hours to install (about 1000 packages), that is, the problem is identical on both systems. A bit of trussing and dtracing has shown that the pkginstalls being run by the zoneadm install are making door_call calls to nscd that are taking very long, so far observed to be 5 to 40 seconds, but always in

vtimestamp skew, after restorectx()
Hello, I''m using the below dtrace script to capture the flow and times of kernel functions, from an ioctl() call. After an entry into restorectx(), the trace of startimestamp - vtimestamp makes a dramatic jump downwards. Here''s the snippet showing the jump... 6 -> di_checkmem 8 220176600 6 <- di_checkmem

Control-c
why do I need to use Control-c to stop my trace, for example: #dtrace -n ''profile:::tick-1sec/++x == 10/ {exit(0)}'' in my system with heavy IO load, I have to use Control-c without heavy IO, the same trace cmd just return automatically after 10 sec. I just assume Control-c is to deliver a signal to dtrace, but why do I have to in some cases (like I have a heavy IO load)?
