Truning on pid$target probes hangs Solaris
Hi:
I''m running Indiana (OpenSolaris developer preview) under parallels
in OS X 10.5.1. I can consistently get Solaris to hang.
Doing a
dtrace -n pid\$target::malloc:entry''{@=count()}'' -c ls
will consistently hang Solaris.
Basically doing anything with PID provider with the
-c option seems to hangs Solaris. Only way to recover
is to stop and start Parallels desktop.

FW: Memory Leak Problem in My Application running on Solaris 10.
Hi,
This is regarding Dtrace usability for memory leak detection.
We have real-time application written C++ which runs on Solaris 10
having a problem that''s the my application grows in size from 130 Mb
to 450Mb in around 15 days.
So there is two possibilities with the application growth of memory
due to Size growth of Dictionary Objects (Like Maps) and Memory Leak.

How to emit associative array after ^C
Boy am I a dummy. I want to simply dump out unfreed allocations when I terminate the script. What''s the secret sauce?
#!/usr/sbin/dtrace -s

{
bufs[arg1] = walltimestamp;
}
pid$1::MyFree:entry
/bufs[arg0]/
{
bufs[arg0] = 0;

DTrace vs truss
G''Day Folks,
I''ve finally typed up my classic DTrace demo, which I use to introduce
people to DTrace (I delivered this at SOSUG#1),
http://www.brendangregg.com/DTrace/dtracevstruss.html
Here I create a fault and show the difficulty in analysing it using
previous tools. Then I compare the impact of analysing the problem
using both DTrace and truss. DTrace wins (a lot!).

copyin having secondary effects.
Dtracing gethostbyname I''m trying to read the h_alias array and all the entries it points to however every time I copyin an entry pointed to by the first entry in teh h_alias array the other entries in the array get corrupted.
So I have ended up with this script:
#!/usr/bin/dtrace -CZs
#include <netdb.h>
pid$target::gethostbyname_r:return
{
self->r = (struct hostent

Using DTrace to locate memory leak
Howdy,
I am attempting to isolate the location of a memory leak in a 4GL program,
and have hit a bit of a snag. When I LD_PRELOAD libumem and run the
application server, "::findleaks -fdv" reports numerous leaks:

Dtrace locks up on sol
Hi all...
I''ve just got my hands on a Solaris 10 box for the first time. I''ve heard wonderous things about dtrace, so the first command I type is dtrace -l which disappointingly does nothing at all. It just hangs, and neither Ctrl-D, Ctrl-C or kill -9 from another shell will do anything to kill it.
The box is:

Slow pkginstalls due to long door_calls to nscd
Hi all,
I am installing a zone onto two different V445s running S10U4 and the
zones are taking hours to install (about 1000 packages), that is, the
problem is identical on both systems. A bit of trussing and dtracing has
shown that the pkginstalls being run by the zoneadm install are making
door_call calls to nscd that are taking very long, so far observed to be
5 to 40 seconds, but always in

how to debug shared-memory using dtrace/mdb
A complex data structure stored in the shared-memory.
Couple of processes attach to the shared-memory...
Some of them spawn child procs...
Two processes have change notification mechanism encoded...
Basically the producer timestamps and the consumer compares the timestamp against it''s snapshot, if they differ then does use a semaphore to lock and gather critical data and replaces the

Where & Why is my process sleeping a lot?
I have a program where the process seems to be sleeping a lot (waiting
on something)
What would be the right approach to figure out via dtrace where it is
sleeping and why it is sleeping?
In my current process, using truss -D shows that it reaches pollsys and
the whole process sleeps for 1.5 - 1.8 seconds before it awakes again.
Its the only significant process running on this two CPU

dtrace missing ''unlinkat''? showing process stack?
everyone,
Just out of curiosity, I did a
dtrace -n ''syscall:::entry { @num[execname, probefunc] = count(); }''
and looked at the entries produced by ''rm''.
I see everything that rm did, *except* the unlinkat - which is unfortunate because I want to trace which processes have deleted which files.
So - does dtrace contain unlinkat as a probe for a system call?

zfs inotify?
OK, so this may be a little off-topic, but here goes:
The reason I switched to OpenSolaris was primarily to take advantage of ZFS''s
features when storing my digital imaging collection.
I switched from a pretty stock Linux setup, but it left me at one
disadvantage. I had been using inotify under Linux to trigger a series of Ruby
scripts that would do all the basic ingestion/setup for

Determining Parent''s execname
Hi,
I''m trying to trace the io of a given file, but I have a feeling that it''s been
done via a script, as such I''d like to be able to tell the names of the calling
processe tree, similar to what ptree produces.
Is there any way to get this information without running ptree using system()?
Thanks,
Darren.

Matching Malloc and Free
I would like to profile heap usage on a per thread basis in a large application process. To do this I am tracking calls to malloc and free with the attached script. Everything seems to look OK with some simple test programmes, however, when I track the live system, the results suggest that one thread has grown by approximately 1Gb and I would be surprised if this was true because I ran pmap -x on

USDT probes from PostgreSQL
while trying to use the USDT made available to us in Postgresql database I have problems enabling them.
On my database server I ran 1024+ PG processes (1024 clients). The server is a 8 core T2000 @1000MHz. 32GB. 7 storage arrays. Solaris 10 Update 4. Home compiled PG 8.3 beta 1 (optimized binary for T1 chip) with DTrace probes enabled.
When running without enabling the probes I have approx 25%
