dtracing a forked process OR dynamic library
Hi, I am tracking down a problem and would like to know how I can follow a forked process with my dtrace script, or how I can trace a dynamic library. Here is the problem. I am tracing dtlogin, and specifically I am trying to determine what error libpkcs11`<routine> is returning. It turns out dtlogin forks a lot of processes, and I believe the second forked process is the one that winds

User Privileges and Dtrace
Dear Experts, My customer is migrating to Solaris 10 from Solaris 8 and have asked me to determine if: With Dtrace, is the user limited to probing only processes they own? The customer has a general security requirement to control user access via management of privileges. Currently, on Solaris 8, LDAP is strongly while RBAC is weakly applied. This will likely change in the Solaris 10 production

df -k takes too long only at random times

Network Latency
Hiya, I''m trying to track down some throughput latency that our customer seems to be attributing to our product, I can''t see what he''s talking about, but I want to try and get some deeper granularity than I might get with something like smokeping, and maybe even see if its down to something tunable on our end. I''ve been looking for some examples on how

Qs. on fbt::copystr: probe
Hi all, I have questions about something I observed just now: 1) on AMD64, S10u1: # dtrace -n ''fbt::copystr:entry{printf ("%p\n", args[0]);}'' -c /bin/pwd dtrace: invalid probe specifier fbt::copystr:entry{printf ("%p\n", args[0]);}: in action list: index 0 is out of range for fbt::copystr:entry args[ ] but # dtrace -n ''fbt::copystr:entry{printf

DTrace typewriter
G''Day Folks, I''ve found another use of dtrace, this makes your console keyboard sound like a typewriter. http://www.brendangregg.com/DTrace/typewriter-0.70.tar.gz I''ve only tested it on an UltraSPARC 5 and a Pentium laptop so far, more to follow. Ok, sorry, not actually a practical use of DTrace. :) Enjoy! Brendan [Sydney, Australia]

Dtracing scsi
A small script to see what SCSI commands are being issued by a system: http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/chrisg?entry=scsi_d_script Still work in progress as I needs to handle larger CDBs but it is a start, since I don''t have a disk that big it is not a problem for me yet. Also getting the return scsi packet is a hack but so far I can see no alternative short of knowing about all the

zfs chattiness at boot time
Hi all, I recently started seeing zfs chattiness at boot time: "reading zfs config" and something like "mounting zfs filesystems (n/n)". Is this really necessary? I thought with SMF the times where every script announced its'' existance had gone (and good thing, too). Can''t we print something only if it goes wrong? Michael -- Michael Schuster Recursion,

Dtrace queries - predicates & func arg tracing
[1] Predicates in one-liners I would like to list the probe modules in my executable and then dynamically create a dscript to trace execution of those modules alone (by excluding the 3rd party and system libraries). I tried the below script without success. The conditional given in the predicate is not taking effect. Why is this so ? $ dtrace -ln ''pid$target:::

Documenting different OO-aproaches in R as a package?
Hello, I see some people including myself confused by the different object-oriented approaches in R (S3, S4, OOP, R.oo etc.). Would it be ok to collect examples and solutions for the different OO-packages in one package and add a vignette for documentation? (assuming I find time for this task) I mean in this case the package would not add data or functionality to R or serve as a companion

how to debug shared-memory using dtrace/mdb
A complex data structure stored in the shared-memory. Couple of processes attach to the shared-memory... Some of them spawn child procs... Two processes have change notification mechanism encoded... Basically the producer timestamps and the consumer compares the timestamp against it''s snapshot, if they differ then does use a semaphore to lock and gather critical data and replaces the

Massive problems with ''PCI-DMA: Out of SW-IOMMU space for XXX bytes [..]'' with 3Ware controller
Hi list, this days I''ve tried to update a 32bit XEN 3.0.4 system (kernel 2.6.16) to XEN 3.1.2 on AMD64 (kernel 2.6.18). The system has 2GB RAM and a 3ware 9500-12 SATA raid controller. The old system worked fine for about half a year now. The new system boots fine so far but when doing some "bigger" changes to the filesystem I get a lot of this errors: > PCI-DMA: Out of

Why pv-on-hvm drivers?
Hi list, I''ve read about recent efforts to push pv-on-hvm drivers to Linux mainline and I''m curious to know the cause for this. What''s the advantage over using pv_ops directly and booting the kernel paravirtualized? Are there plans to move Linux domUs closer to the KVM way (from an architectural point of view)? Hope you can help. Regards, Markus

Available free memory.
Hi, Can I use DTrace to determine memory status? 1.Total Physical Memory, Used Memory. 2.Total Swap Space and Used Swap Space. I did find few DTrace scripts but had too much in them and I am unable to chop off unwanted lines of code due to lack of knowledge. It will be very helpful if some one can share the piece of code that serves my purpose as mentioned above. Regards, Ramesh. Ramesh

RE: [spam] Re: Xen on Jaunty
  Tne answer is NO. Any vanilla kernel (> 2.6.27) itself allows only to enable PV Guest (paravirtual) mode, but not Xen Dom0 Support. Mainline Linux doesn''t  contain Xen Dom0 Support merged. You have to work on it on your own.   I''ve sent you two links in the very first message. View second one - patching 2.6.30.1 via Andrew''s Lyon rebase patch set :-

Have download.packages consider non-CRAN repositories
Hi List, I've set up a CRAN-like repository (not a CRAN mirror) on the local filesystem (this will change to http in the future). R has been told about this repository using the following entry in R_HOME/etc/repositories: PMR2 PMR2 file:///Users/arbeit/Documents/clarin/Open_Science/PMR2/ TRUE TRUE FALSE FALSE Now I expected download.packages(), install.packages() etc. to look for

:interactive Callback
Hi! I have a question concerning the :interactive Callback from the link_to_remote function. Quote from the API: "Called when the user can interact with the remote document, even though it has not finished loading." What is the exact status of the application on "interactive" - How can a user interact with the document if it''s still loading... Thanks Stefan
