Request for code review: the brendan() action
This came up as an RFE during the conference (I believe it''s been logged as "4012008: brendan() action needed for DTrace Toolkit".) As everyone here is aware, DTrace is not quite as user friendly as it could be. For the uninitiated, it can be confusing to run a DTrace script and not see the expected output. Brendan Gregg has addressed this in the DTrace Toolkit[1] by

Newbie question re stddev, quantmod and performanceanalytics
Hi, I am trying to calculate the std dev of returns of YHOO so far i got: getSymbols("YHOO") retYHOO <- Return.calculate(Cl(YHOO)) > sd(retYHOO) YHOO.Close NA but i received an NA....can any assist? tks! -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Newbie-question-re-stddev%2C-quantmod-and-performanceanalytics-tp25001293p25001293.html Sent from the R help

CPU time stats
hi, I am trying to find out the avg cpu time spent in each of my user methods (exclusive of other methods invoked by a method). Hence the following snippet failed miserably: ----------------------- pid$target:a.out::entry { time[probefunc] = timestamp;} pid$target:a.out::return { @spent[probefunc] = avg(timestamp - time[probefunc]);} END { printa(@spent);}

Can I use printa() for printing multiple agg regations?
Hi Bryan, > Does that sit well with everyone? Seems fine to me. Just revisiting one of Dragan''s points, though (sorry if I missed the answer) - is there a reason for making this global (via a #pragma) rather than, say, simply providing two functions which print in the different orders? e.g. printa() for sort by sample, printak() for sort by key. My reason for wanting to do both in

usdt probes vs pid$target
I added a couple of static probes to Firefox to measure actual work done. I could have used a pid$target probe with a function name but work is done within an if statement, which is where I placed the static probes. I''m wondering about my use, though. Is the following significantly more efficient than pid$target::FunName:entry and return? I heard somewhere that $target does not

getting newest version of dtrace
> Your best bet to getting a supported (and *working*) > configuration with updated dtrace would be to upgrade > the OS. Solaris 10 update 5 is latest I reckon and > update 6 would be out real soon now. Full Ack. It''s quite difficult, though, to predict what DTrace features one will get when installing Solaris 10 (whatever release). There is nothing about the fine details of

Evaluation failure of IAPWS95 functions in a rowwise manner (tidyverse style)
I'm trying to use the IAPWS95 package with the tidyverse packages. For some reason, the function is not outputting the correct rho. A minimal example with results is below. I've also included the definition of the DTp function from the IAPWS95 library. ==================================== library(IAPWS95) library(tidyverse) initial <- data.frame(T=c(279,294),p=c(0.46,0.46))

Evaluation failure of IAPWS95 functions in a rowwise manner (tidyverse style)
Hi Shawn, I don't think it has anything to do with the tidyverse. If you keep simplifying your example you'll get all the way down to > DTp(T=c(279,294),p=c(0.46,0.46)) [1] 1000.12283 --Ista On Wed, May 30, 2018 at 2:14 PM, Shawn Way <SWay at meco.com> wrote: > I'm trying to use the IAPWS95 package with the tidyverse packages. truncating aggregation output only
Hello dtrace-discuss, Sometimes I want to run a script for some time and every n second output N top entries. trunc() isn''t suitable here as it also removed keys/values. I want it ''coz over time if I use sum() entries which are normally truncated can actually get to top over a time. Maybe printa() extension, something like: printa(@b[10]) - to output top 10? --

putting a running app into trace mode
Suppose I have a USDT probe in Firefox and that I''m trying to catch the startup with a probe like this: proc:::exec-success /execname == "firefox-bin"/ { start = timestamp; } and stop tracing when Firefox hits this USDT probe: mozilla:::main-entry { exit(0); } How do I put the running firefox-bin into "trace mode" so that my USDT probe fires? Thanks, Joel

Aggregation elements
Howdy, Is there a method to get the number of elements in an aggregation? Are the results stored in an aggregation guaranteed to be in any type of order? Thanks for any insight, - Ryan -- UNIX Administrator http://daemons.net/~matty

NetCDF - rolling means and StdDev
Hello, I am trying to come up with a routine to calculate a rolling mean and standard deviation for three parameters stored in a NetCDF file. The NetCDF file contains 10 years of daily records for each of the three parameters, and I need the statistics for each of the three parameters. Below I include some code illustrating what I've done so far. Obviously this approach does not get at the

why dtrace is not quiet?
i''m running the following script: #pragma D option quiet profile:::tick-1sec / ++x >= 15 / { exit(0); } io:::start { @io_size[execname] = sum(args[0]->b_bcount); } on exit, the script prints out the value of @io_size, why? there''s no printa(), and i also specified "D option quiet" (i also tried -q). this seems to happen with any kind of probe: on exit(0) all

Monitoring filessytem access
When somebody is hammering on the system, I want to be able to detect who''s doing it, and hopefully even what they''re doing. I can''t seem to find any way to do that. Any suggestions? Everything I can find ... iostat, nfsstat, etc ... AFAIK, just show me performance statistics and so forth. I''m looking for something more granular. Either *who* the

profile provider: is it me doing stupid things?
Just showing someone how great DTrace is and then we spot something I do not understand. Of course it can be a major misunderstanding of myself. Would appreciate another (expert) look upon this. The goal we try to achieve is trying to get insight if there is a bursty nature in the time slot when system calls are done. Following DTrace snippet is tried: dtrace -q -p 3173 -n

getting hex out of ints
I have a probe: pid111::myfunc:entry { self->arg = arg0; } pid111::myfunc:return /self->arg/ { @[self->arg] = quantize(); } works great, but i''d like arg0 to be printed in hex. I''ve tried numerous approaches to do this but i''ve hit a wall every time. I''ve tried: 1) self->arg = sprintf(arg0); no, cuz dtrace has no sprintf 2) self->arg

Alternating between "for loops"
Dear All, I would like to apply two different "for loops" to each set of four columns of a matrix (the loops here are simplifications of the actual loops I will be running which involve multiple if/else statements). I don't know how to "alternate" between the loops depending on which column is "running through the loop" at the time. ## Set up matrix J <- 10 N

dtrace overhead and proper measuring technique
I''m trying to time a function within Firefoxwith a pid$target probe [2]. e.g dtrace -Zqw -x dynvarsize=64m -x evaltime=preinit -p 13954 -s menu- construct.d -s sigcont.d elapsed: 12.7942481ms cpu : 7.7911194ms count : 40 times I''m also measuring Firefox startup time by running it arguments like this: ... file:///Users/joelr/work/mozilla/startup/startup.html#`python
