It''s quite difficult, though, to predict what DTrace features one will get when installing Solaris 10 (whatever release). There is nothing about the fine details of DTrace in the Solaris 10 What''s New documents. "printa() with multiple aggregations" is a nice feature which I have found missing in Solaris 10 5/08 :-(. Same for stddev() (which by the way isn''t listed in http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/dtrace/ChangeLog/ either, as it is kind of outdated, too). I found the guide on how to read DTrace source code instead of (unavailable) documentation most instructive (http://www.solarisinternals.com/wiki/index.php/DTrace_Topics_Internals#Undocumented_Functions). Unfortunately this approach doesn''t work for identifying supported/unsupported features in Solaris, as the source code is not included (or am I wrong?). Is anyone of you aware of additional information on how to find out about DTrace features available in a given Solaris version (specifically U5 and the upcoming U6)? I''ll try and get around to that in the next week or so. Basically, the last Solaris 10 release to get a DTrace feature backport was 08/07 (U4).> Is anyone of you aware of additional information on how to find out about DTrace features available in a given Solaris version (specifically U5 and the upcoming U6)?From a features point of view they should be pretty much the same as U4. Hi Jon,> Yeah, sorry about the ChangeLog getting out of date. > I''ll try and get around to that in the next week or so.that''s great news. Thanks! (Maybe you could post a short note here, once the page is up to date)> From a features point of view they should be pretty much the same as U4.Is this to be read as "there will only be bugfixes in U6"? Is there a Sun policy on what features (not) to propagate from OpenSolaris Dtrace to Solaris? And are these backports a priority at all (i.e. would you say that Solaris users long for new DTrace features or do you consider them being happy with the existing feature set; do advanced DTrace users preferably use OpenSolaris?). If you''d start a poll, I''d give a strong vote for a consistent and bold backport policy! \Manfred -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

If you''d start a poll, I''d give a strong vote for a consistent and bold backport policy! The policy with DTrace so far has been to backport pretty much everything that is in the current development gate at the time of backport. By taking everything up to a given point in time it''s a lot easier to know what''s in a given release. At the minute I''m not aware of any plans to backport but feedback on this situation is always welcome though (I''ll put you down as a +1 then :-) ). Jon.
