Introductory statistics and introduction to R
Hi,
I have a bright, diligent second-year graduate student who wants to
learn statistics and R and will, in effect, be taking a tutorial from me
on these subjects. (If you've seen some of my questions on this list,
please don't laugh.) As an undergrad he majored in philosophy, so this
will be his first foray into computer programming and statistics.
I'm thinking of having him use

Question about replication
Good morning,
I?m looking at dovecot replication for the first time for a particular use case: The VM running dovecot is currently in a public cloud, and I want to move it on-premises, so I want to replicate all mail data from the older instance to the new (then cutover internal DNS) (and in the process update to newer features on the internal instance such as mdbox vs Maildir).
However, the

deriving mean from specific cases
Hi all,
I have a large dataset that has >10k entries. The dataset is stored in a
dataframe with the headers:
SubID Condition1 Condition2 Result1 Result2
There are multiple entries for a given SubID(Subject ID). Condition 1 has 3
levels and condition2 has 2 levels (therefore there are 6 possible
combinations all together e.g. Cond1 Level1 x Cond2 Level 1 etc.) and i need
to compute for

new CentOS 5 as DNS server
Hi folks,
As a breather from the
"thread-now-wider-than-my-headers-window-in-thunderbird" conversation
re: mixing repos, I have a question regarding a machine I'm about to put
online. :)
I run a web hosting company and my secondary (primary to the world) DNS
box died from a massive rootkit/hack last night. It was running an old
Slackware 9.1 installation and I will be completely

Asterisk HA Current Thoughts (Centos 5.3 Platform)
I'm looking into doing an HA setup for a Asterisk 1.4 install on
Centos. I've seen a number of different pointers to packages for this
some of which are packages that seem quite dated from an update
perspective (Ultra Monkey links I've seen haven't been updated in a
while). What is the current best practice on this for this platform?
My first foray into any of the

Adding a NOP bitcode instruction
Hi,
I'm trying to follow the instructions on how to add a new bitcode
instruction:
http://llvm.org/docs/ExtendingLLVM.html
This is my first foray into the guts of LLVM and I'm not sure I'm doing
things the right way. I came up with a patch that adds a NOP (no
operation) that will work with llvm-as, llvm-dis, and lli. It would be
nice if one of the experts could take a look and give

terms.formula
I'm in the very initial stage of expanding the formula processing
in my quantile regression function rq() to handle additive
nonparametric components, say qss(x), or qss(x,z). I need some
advice about strategy for formula processing. My initial foray
was to use:
terms(formula,specials="qss")
and then modify the components of the resulting
terms.object. But in changing formula

mapping states with colors
Hi folks,
I'm just learning how to use maps. As an initial foray, I'm mapping the
states that have "duty to retreat" (blue) and "stand your ground" (red)
self-defense standards. Here is my extremely naive script:
dtr <- c('alabama', 'arizona', 'conneticut', 'delaware', 'dist of columbia'
, 'hawaii',

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 7 install fails -ve memory reported
Hi folks,
I'm presently having my second foray into Wine. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 on a machine with 3GB memory. I'm having problems installing Dragon NaturallySpeaking 7 and would welcome some guidance.
When I run "wine /media/cdrom1/autorun.exe" the install looks promising for a few moments, then an error message saying:

[LLVMdev] Using lli
I'm about to foray into my first serious use of lli.
I'd like to be able to take the bitcode produced at various points by our
compiler and execute it to check for bugs.
The big question for me is around libraries. To execute tests I will ned to
link the JITed code to precompiled libraries. Looking at the lli
documentation, I don't see any specific flags to handle that. Did I

WoW FPS under Wine?
I recall this old post:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/plenderj/archive/2007/07/14/foray-into-feisty-fawn-helped-me-take-back-my-mips.aspx
This was in Ubuntu 7.04 days.
What are current test results like for WoW on Windows XP versus WoW on
Ubuntu/Wine these days?

Problem creating Samba Admin account
I am trying to create a Samba Admin account in FDS as per the final steps of
http://directory.fedora.redhat.com/wiki/Howto:Samba
I've asked about this on the FDS mailing list with no luck, I am hoping
someone here will be able to help me.
I've created a file with contents:

I then ran:

odesolve dynload example
Hello R Developers,
This is my first foray into using c-code with R, so please forgive my
foolishness.
I had a look at the archives and did not find anything on this, so
hopefully I am not doubling up.
I have tried to use R cmd to create an object file from the odesolve
dynload example.
I am using windows and have just installed rtools, and have the latest
version of stable R (2..7.2).

OK - finished some tests over tcp and ironed out a lot of problems.
rdma is next; should be snap now....

of the following may be obvious to a non-naive admin..]

vmware fusion display auto-size problem
Greetings.
I am running vmware fusion 4.1.1 on a OSX host. Centos6.2 is a guest.
The box is a macbook laptop running leopard.
Before upgrading to 6.2, the display auto-resize (or auto-fill) was
working fine. After 6.2, it has stopped working.
Centos is fully updated to 6.2. I have tried to install the vmware
drivers from the repository (via yum), and yum reports I have the
latest.

Send SPF SoftFails to Junk
Hello Dovecot gurus,
I've set up SPF checking on my postfix gateway and have confirmed that messages from domains set with hard fails that don't come from a good sender are rejected outright. Messages from domains set with a softfail that come from bad sources are tagged in the message header with "Softfail (domain owner discourages use of this host)", but end up in the

Patch to 0.0.39
Hi
I''m developing software using wxruby2. At first I tried to use wxruby
0.6 but I couldn''t live without some of those new funky features :)
So, instead of writing my own code, I got a bit sidetracked and wrote
http://rubyforge.org/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=9297&group_id=35&atid=220
instead.
Seeing as this is my first foray in to the innards of wxruby2, I

"tier-enabled" which is not present in info file from other 3 nodes, hence
when gluster peer probe call is made, in order to maintain consistency
across the cluster cksum is compared. In this
case as both files are different leading to different cksum, causing state
