zfs root eta?
Hi, I was just wondering if ZFS root is likely to be an install option any time soon, either in SXCR or the June Solaris update? The mechanism at Tabriz''s blog seem to work well, but it''d be nice to get it out of the box. -- Rasputin :: Jack of All Trades - Master of Nuns http://number9.hellooperator.net/

ZFS root install
I have posted a blog http://solaristhings.blogspot.com/ on how I have configured a zfs root partition on my laptop. It is a slightly modified version of Tabriz''s blog http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/tabriz?entry=are_you_ready_to_rumble The main differences, is that I only require a very small ufs partition for grub, and I detail how to use a zfs clone as a test root partition. ZFS core contributor nominations
The time has come to review the current Contributor and Core contributor grants for ZFS. Since all of the ZFS core contributors grants are set to expire on 02-24-2009 we need to renew the members that are still contributing at core contributor levels. We should also add some new members to both Contributor and Core contributor levels. First the current list of Core contributors: Bill

zfs object sets and datasets
Hi All, I am looking at trying to understand the conceptual model of how data is grouped and partitioned within a storge pool. In looking at the on disk document that Tabriz sent out a few weeks ago I see that object sets are the grouping which ZFS uses to group objects that are related. Specifially to aid in format and layout of like objects in to a set. So, for example 1 potential object

format(1M) quits if there are pools on disks and no zfs module
Hi. While submitting SDR-0149 on ZFS bug I encountered problem with format utility. This is v240 with snv_29 with internal disks. On s0 slices there is zfs pool (which is not imported). I did unload zfs modules then moved zfs driver and run format. Now format quits just because there''s no zfs module (and not even one zfs pool is imported). It shouldn''t behave that

[cifs-discuss] Disk quotas with CIFS & ZFS
There''s not much that CIFS can do as far as user quotas go without filesystem support. I''ve CC''ed zfs-discuss, somebody there might be able to provide you something useful. Afshin Ross wrote: > Not sure if this is the best place to ask about this. I know ZFS doesn''t have user quotas, but is there any chance something like this could be added to CIFS? >

? Removing a disk from a ZFS Storage Pool
Hi my understanding is that you cannot remove a disk from a ZFS storage pool once you have added it...but I also think I saw an email from Jeff B saying that the ability to depopulate a disk so that it can be removed is being worked on....or was I dreaming ? What is the status of this ? Thanks Tim -- Signature Tim Thomas Staff Engineer Storage Systems Product Group

ZFS partially hangs when removing an rpool mirrored disk while having some IO on another pool on another partition of the same disk
Hello, Sorry for the (very) long subject but I''ve pinpointed the problem to this exact situation. I know about the other threads related to hangs, but in my case there was no < zfs destroy > involved, nor any compression or deduplication. To make a long story short, when - a disk contains 2 partitions (p1=32GB, p2=1800 GB) and - p1 is used as part of a zfs mirror of rpool

flag day: ZFS on-disk format change
Summary: If you use ZFS, do not downgrade from build 35 or later to build 34 or earlier. This putback (into Solaris Nevada build 35) introduced a backwards- compatable change to the ZFS on-disk format. Old pools will be seamlessly accessed by the new code; you do not need to do anything special. However, do *not* downgrade from build 35 or later to build 34 or earlier. If you do so, some of

Trying to understand volblocksize ?
Hi, I am trying to understand the use of volblocksize in emulated volumes. If I create a volume in pool and I want a database engine to read and write, say 16K blocks. Should I then set volblocksize to 16K ? Regards, Patrik This message posted from opensolaris.org

zpool on raw disk. Do I need to format?
Folks, I am learning more about zfs storage. It appears, zfs pool can be created on a raw disk. There is no need to create any partitions, etc. on the disk. Does this mean there is no need to run "format" on a raw disk? I have added a new disk to my system. It shows up as /dev/rdsk/c8t1d0s0. Do I need to format it before I convert it to zfs storage? Or, can I simply use it as: # zfs

nevada_41 and zfs disk partition
I just installed build 41 of Nevada on a SunBlade 1500 with 2GB of ram. I wanted to check out zfs since the delay of S10U2 I really could not wait any longer :) I installed it on my system and created a zpool out of an approximately 40GB disk slice. I then wanted to build a version of thunderbird that contains a local patch that we like. So I download the source tar ball. I try to untar it on the

ZFS and disk usage management?
After struggling for some time to try and wedge a ZFS file server into our environment, I have come to the conclusion that I''m simply going to have to live without quotas. They have been immensely useful in the past 5 years or so in allowing us to keep track of which groups are hogging disk space, and even finding a bug in one manufacturing/engineering tool which occasionally crashed in a

FW: ZFS disk size report
Hi, It would be great help to understand the how the actually allocated disk space keeps getting reduced as shown below (I understand different filesystem/volume management implementation would have different logic to set aside some space reserved for meta-data etc). If the following can be explained it would really help. I allocated 80*25G luns to a solaris server (clariion luns). (80*25

zfs sparc boot "Bad magic number in disk label"
Hello, I recently installed SunOS 5.11 snv_91 onto a Ultra 60 UPA/PCI with OpenBoot 3.31 and two 300GB SCSI disks. The root file system is UFS on c0t0d0s0. Following the steps in ZFS Admin I have attempted to convert root to ZFS utilizing c0t1d0s0. However, upon "init 6" I am always presented with: Bad magic number in disk label can''t open disk label package My Steps: 1)
