Audio Quality Feedback (probably a bug?)
Hi, I hope this is the right address for this e-mail... I've been experimenting with OggEnc v0.5 (beta3), and I've experienced a wierd artifact with a certain song ("Theme From Mission Impossible" by Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton). It's pretty subtle, but it's audible. I've ripped the wave from the original CD, and encoded it at average bitrate

S4 classes and objects -- fixed structure? No...
Hello. Suppose you define a new S4-class, say > setClass("track", representation(x="numeric", y="numeric")) Don't worry if you have a deja vu, it's from the help page. Your new class is said to have a fixed structure: two slots, x, and y, and that should apply to all objects you construct as members of that class. > tr <- new( "track" )

Transcoding listening test
As far as I can see, transcoding could be usefull for people who do not primarly care about quality but about filesizes. One could assume that such a user would have a collection of mp3's at 128kbps or higher bitrates, and uses an encoder like BladeEnc or Xing. He wants to take uses of ogg's supposed quality and transcode his 128-or-higher files into 96 or 112kbps oggs to save diskspace.

Missing .Net checkboxes
Hello, I installed Wine and .Net 2.0 with winetricks. The applications that I am interested are working but not in 100%. All checkboxes are missing, also the arrows of comboboxes. Is there a way to fix this? Also the windows are not correctly resized but this is the smaller problem. Is there a solution to fix this?

puppet-0.23.1 rpm''s
Hi, I''ve just built rpm''s for puppet-0.23.1 - since there were a few people who had trouble with the update for 0.23.0 (the change in config files requires a bit of rpm trickery), I decided to be a little more cautious in how I push the new packages. So far, new packages are (or, will be shortly) available in rawhide, Fedora 7 updates-testing, and in my yum repos for

Dovecot under brute force attack - nice attacker
Hi List, optimizing the configuration on one of our servers (which was hit by a brute force attack on dovecot) showed an odd behavior. The short story: On one of our servers an attacker did a brute force attack on dovecot (pop3). Since the attacker closed and reopened the connection after every user/password combination the logs showed many lines like this: dovecot: pop3-login: Aborted

Two questions
Greetings, I have two questions that I could not answer from the documentation. A - ecdf and confidence intervals : Is there a (simple) way to generate confidence intervals (95%) for a ecdf? B - cross-validation of rpart trees : a colleague is using S to generate decision tree and mentioned to me the use of cross-validation. Is this function enabled in R ? if so, how should one proceed to

setting environment variables
Hi all, I''m running Puppet on FreeBSD and recently I started building my own packages. I would like to set the PKGROOT variable on all hosts so that packages are fetched from my server instead of freebsd.org. Is it possible to set this with puppet? I''ve read the suggestion on Trac [1], and it solves the problem when puppet is run with an rc script, but it won''t work

Puppet Best Practice
Hello everyone, A long time ago, I posted the Stanford Best Practices and I''ve gone through and updated it today. I''d like to have people go through it and see if we can strip out some Stanford specific stuff and tag this as an official best practice. I think an official best practice will be important as more and more people consider making shareable modules, etc (mostly

(Classical) Request for Standardization of expanded TAGS
A month or two ago I sent an email to this list proposing to expand the list of "standard" tags for Ogg Vorbis. No tag would be required, but if you wanted to encode certain types of information about a file, you could use a standard tag. I went through the whole discussion, and revised my proposal in light of all the comments from everyone. Here is the updated proposal. This
