zfs reports small st_size for directories?
Why does ZFS report such small directory sizes? For example, take a maildir directory with ten entries:

Samba 2.0.6, MKS' touch.exe, and file/dir time stamps
Hello all,
we are experiencing problems with samba 2.0.6 and the MKS touch command.
during our builds, we touch files and directories so that our make
dependencies work correctly. Unfortunately, it seems that MKS' touch.exe
doesn't actually change the time stamp of a file or directory. The
command returns without an error, but the timestamp does not change.
The same problem exists

Preventing brute force password attacks
I was hoping to set up fail2ban to block IP addresses that generate
too many Samba password failures, but it needs a syslog message with
the IP address of the computer that failed password authentication.
Unfortunately, Samba doesn't seem to do this in my environment. Here's
a sample error message:
smbd[312]: smb_pam_passcheck: PAM: smb_pam_auth failed - Rejecting User brutus !

"net rpc vampire" case sensitivity problem
We just migrated a small network from a Win2K PDC to Samba, using
"net rpc vampire" into a tdbsam backend on a Samba 3.0.2a Linux box.
One of the users, let's call him Jon Harker, had the NT username "JHarker".
When we ran "pdbedit -v jharker", we saw this:
Unix username: JHarker
NT username: JHarker
Well, that looks wrong - the NT

matching UIDs to RIDs when converting from Windows to Samba
I have a bunch of Windows users using a Win2k server as a PDC. I want
to move all the server functions to a Samba server without disturbing
the users in any way. The client machines are all Win2k, using local
profiles.
Samba insists on algorithmicly generating the RID from the UID, so the
Windows user, after migration, gets a new SID and loses contact with
their local profile. In fact, they

XCP - Reclaim diskspace from snapshots on xcp 1.0
Hi list,
Saw that there''s a patch for xenserver 5.6fp1 which should fix this:
http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX129267
Anybody know if/when this will happen on XCP?
I have the same problem - disk usage remains the same after snapshot
deletion - this is in the log on the pool master:

MS Excel/NT/Samba timestamp - serious problem, bug?
A rather distressing timestamp issue (to multiple users here). Anyone
seen similar behavior or have a suggestion/solution?
Problem:
Opening and closing an excel file (no changes/keystrokes to file) on
the Samba server causes the file to be saved with time stamp of
closing. (There is no autosave set on Excel - also see other info below)

hardlinks not working with inode number > 2^31
I've been using 3.0.0pre8 to move a Debian archive from one filesystem
to another. This archive contains a daily snapshot of the Debian ftp
site, with common files hardlinked to save space.
I noticed that it was using far more space than necessary. Upon
investigation it seems that all the source files that have inode numbers
greater than 2^31 aren't being hardlinked together at the

Dovecot/Pigeonhole Issue (UTC modtime instead of localtime)
Hi List,
We are using the following setup:
Dovecot-2.2.18
Pigeonhole-0.4.8 (for Dovecot-2.2)
After the mail is finally delivered via a fileinto by the Sieve filter
it gets an updated timestamp (modification time).
The server has localtime setup correctly IMO (UTC +0200), but still the
delivered mail is setup as being two hours old.
I think I found out that the function

rsync-2.6.2: NFS clients confused after an rsync
We use rsync to update an nfs server. After an update, we noticed that
a large number of clients didn't see the updated data.
It took me a while to be able to reliably reproduce this problem, but it
happens on old and new versions of rysnc. It also happens across all
the platforms we use here (sun/linux/netapp).
This shows the problem: [Note my home directory is NFS mounted]

cdrommon issue
Hi all,
Sometimes the process cdrommon use 99,8% of CPU and the result is that all
vms becames very slow.
I killed the process and now everything is fine but I can''t live migrate
VMS.
I found this problem also in this citrix thread:

One tiny Windows Unicode patch
I have been doing some heavy testing with the new FLAC version, and I
found that CreateFile function in grabbag had been left out of UTF-8
treatment at some point. This causes re-encoding an existing flac to the
same name to break the file if it contains non-ascii characters.
Attached patch fixes this.

[LLVMdev] Which StatusInfo fields should have values set when dealing with win32 platform
Hi,
Does any one have an idea which fields and how to the values correctly of
the StatusInfo struct when dealing with the information returned in the
BY_HANDLE_FILE_INFORMATION struct
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/fileio/base/by_handle_file_information_str.asp)

Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8
Bouncing a thread from the device drivers list:
http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=357176
Does anybody know if OpenSolaris will support this new Supermicro card,
based on the Marvell 88SE6480 chipset? It''s a true PCI Express 8 port JBOD
SAS/SATA controller with pricing apparently around $125.
If it works with OpenSolaris it sounds pretty much perfect.

i use rsync from Windows to rsync on Linux via ssh and get IO Errors
and connection unexpectedly closed errors on almost every sync run.
Can anybody give me some hints on how to track down the problem?
thx, Chris

Possible problems with EventLog#write
Hi,
I''ve got EventLog#write and EventLog.add_event_source methods done.
Well, I *think* they''re done, but I can''t get the data (text) to work
properly, and I''m not sure if it''s a bug in my .mc file, the
add_event_source method, the write method, or just a goof in my test file.
The source, category and event id seem to be ok. However, the

[LLVMdev] Which StatusInfo fields should have values set when dealing with win32 platform
I'm implementing this right now. BY_HANDLE_FILE_INFORMATION isn't the
correct API, as Path doesn't have an open file handle handy. Nor does
it need one.
