no hot spare activation?
While testing a zpool with a different storage adapter using my "blkdev" device, I did a test which made a disk unavailable -- all attempts to read from it report EIO. I expected my configuration (which is a 3 disk test, with 2 disks in a RAIDZ and a hot spare) to work where the hot spare would automatically be activated. But I''m finding that ZFS does not behave this way

devid support for EFI partition improved zfs usibility
Hi, guys, I have add devid support for EFI, (not putback yet) and test it with a zfs mirror, now the mirror can recover even a usb harddisk is unplugged and replugged into a different usb port. But there is still something need to improve. I''m far from zfs expert, correct me if I''m wrong. First, zfs should sense the hotplug event. I use zfs status to check the status of the

ZFS recovery from a disk losing power
running b37 on amd64. after removing power from a disk configured as a mirror, 10 minutes has passed and ZFS has still not offlined it. # zpool status tank pool: tank state: ONLINE status: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. Proposal: ZFS Hot Spare support
As mentioned last night, we''ve been reviewing a proposal for hot spare support in ZFS. Below you can find a current draft of the proposed interfaces. This has not yet been submitted for ARC review, but comments are welcome. Note that this does not include any enhanced FMA diagnosis to determine when a device is "faulted". This will come in a follow-on project, of which some

Error reporting & backup with tar
In the process of tar''ing up files in an older ZFS partition (23.6.2005), the tar command seized up. Truss showed it hanging in stat64(), so I went looking for symptoms. In "zpool status -ve", I found "4" in the SUM column. Being from the old school, I did "dmesg", expecting to see some kernel error message about the disk but found nothing. Is there

ZFS SATA Hotswap Autoreplace
I am trying to test a new setup of NV74. I have set up the system with ZFS boot. Everything works fine until I pull a drive. The system locks up when I try to run any command e.g. zpool status. There is no communication with the server from then on. It does not even respond to pings. Setup - Supermicro SC836TQ-R800 Chassis Supermicro X7DB8 Motherboard Supermicro SAT2-MV8 SATA controller

Mixing SATA & PATA Drives
I suspect it''s probably not a good idea but I was wondering if someone could clarify the details. I have 4 250G SATA(150) disks and 1 250G PATA(133) disk. Would it cause problems if I created a raidz1 pool across all 5 drives? I know the PATA drive is slower so would it slow the access across the whole pool or just when accessing that disk? Thanks for your input. - Chris

ZFS questions with mirrors
IHAC that is asking the following. any thoughts would be appreciated Take two drives, zpool to make a mirror. Remove a drive - and the server HANGS. Power off and reboot the server, and everything comes up cleanly. Take the same two drives (still Solaris 10). Install Veritas Volume Manager (4.1). Mirror the two drives. Remove a drive - everything is still running. Replace the drive, everything

experiences with zpool errors and glm flipouts
Tonight I''ve been moving some of my personal data around on my desktop system and have hit some on-disk corruption. As you may know, I''m cursed, and so this had a high probability of ending badly. I have two SCSI disks and use live upgrade, and I have a partition, /aux0, where I tend to keep personal stuff. This is on an SB2500 running snv_46. The upshot is that I have a slice

Comments on a ZFS multiple use of a pool, RFE.
I filed this RFE earlier, since there is no way for non sun personel to see this RFE for a while I am posting it here, and asking for feedback from the community. creating zvols in a non-global zone (or ''Doctor, it hurts when I do this'')
A colleague just asked if zfs delegation worked with zvols too. Thought I''d give it a go and got myself in a mess (tank/linkfixer is the delegated dataset): root at non-global / # zfs create -V 500M tank/linkfixer/foo cannot create device links for ''tank/linkfixer/foo'': permission denied cannot create ''tank/linkfixer/foo'': permission denied Ok, so

Storage 7000
I''m not sure if this is the right place for the question or not, but I''ll throw it out there anyways. Does anyone know, if you create your pool(s) with a system running fishworks, can that pool later be imported by a standard solaris system? IE: If for some reason the head running fishworks were to go away, could I attach the JBOD/disks to a system running snv/mainline

slog devices don''t resilver correctly
This past weekend, but holiday was ruined due to a log device "replacement" gone awry. I posted all about it here: http://jmlittle.blogspot.com/2008/05/problem-with-slogs-how-i-lost.html In a nutshell, an resilver of a single log device with itself, due to the fact one can''t remove a log device from a pool once defined, cause ZFS to fully resilver but then attach the log

ZFS error handling - suggestion
Howdy, I have at several times had issues with consumer grade PC hardware and ZFS not getting along. The problem is not the disks but the fact I dont have ECC and end to end checking on the datapath. What is happening is that random memory errors and bit flips are written out to disk and when read back again ZFS reports it as a checksum failure: pool: myth state: ONLINE status: One or more

The time has come to review the current Contributor and Core contributor grants for ZFS. Since all of the ZFS core contributors grants are set to expire on 02-24-2009 we need to renew the members that are still contributing at core contributor levels. We should also add some new members to both Contributor and Core contributor levels. First the current list of Core contributors: Bill

ZFS and IBM sdd (vpath)
Hello, I am trying to configure ZFS with IBM sdd. IBM sdd is like powerpath, MPXIO or VxDMP. Here is the error message when I try to create my pool: bash-3.00# zpool create tank /dev/dsk/vpath1a warning: device in use checking failed: No such device internal error: unexpected error 22 at line 446 of ../common/libzfs_pool.c bash-3.00# zpool create tank /dev/dsk/vpath1c cannot open

yay for zfs
This zfs looks great! I really hope this gets put into solaris soon since I don''t think I could live with Solaris express on a production machine. The easy of adding disk and moving directories looks like a life saver, especially for me who deals with trying to store digital media which piles up a couple of gig a day!
