Grub, pata, and sata
I've just filed bug 0004634. Grub won't install onto my pata drive now
that I have a sata drive installed. This is grub 0.97 on CentOS5.5.
Has anyone else encountered this? I'm guessing that I can always
install Fedora on hda, which should give me a working grub, but I was
hoping for something a little less involved.
Thanks,

Installing CentOS on RAID PATA not SATA - A8V
I'm trying to install CentOS 4 on an A8V on the
PATA/Raid drives on the Promise controller. The
Promise controller is recognized (sata_promise), but
the PATA drives are not recognized. Base on this
thread
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=147303
it seems that there is a patch which was merged in
2.6.11 to get pata working.
Any ideas how to proceed?
Thanks in advance

PCI passthrough of a SATA/PATA controller, "FLR functionality not supported"
Hi there,
I have a question regarding PCI passthrough on the Citrix XenServer 5.6
(Xen 3.4.2).
I already managed to get some soundcard passed through to a Windows
guest. So I think my knowledge about that topic isn''t _that_ low. But I
cannot seem to pass through a SATA/PATA controller to a Linux guest.
I have some additional CD/DVD burner (PATA) attached to a SATA/PATA
controller

SMART
On Solaris x86, does zpool (or anything) support PATA (or SATA) IDE
SMART data? With the Predictive Self Healing feature, I assumed that
Solaris would have at least some SMART support, but what I''ve googled so
far has been discouraging.

ZFS SATA Hotswap Autoreplace
I am trying to test a new setup of NV74. I have set up the system with ZFS boot. Everything works fine until I pull a drive. The system locks up when I try to run any command e.g. zpool status. There is no communication with the server from then on. It does not even respond to pings.

ZFS disk failure question
So, my Areca controller has been complaining via email of read errors for a couple days on SATA channel 8. The disk finally gave up last night at 17:40. I got to say I really appreciate the Areca controller taking such good care of me.
For some reason, I wasn''t able to log into the server last night or in the morning, probably because my home dir was on the zpool with the failed disk

How to let wine doing a rescan of PATA devices?
I used to use a hot-plugable PATA-CDROM drive on my Computer (Samsung P35 laptop).
To change drive I use a script which at the bottom of its heart uses
Code:
echo "scsi remove-single-device 1 0 0 0" | sudo tee /proc/scsi/scsi
and
Code:
echo "scsi add-single-device 1 0 0 0" | sudo tee /proc/scsi/scsi
commands in oder to let the OS being aware of the changed drive.

CentOS v4.5 and Intel 965/G33BY chipsets - PATA support
Greetings CentOS users,
I have run into a hardware issue with the Intel 965 chipset. It appears
that the latest kernel doesn't support the Marvell PATA controller. I can
kickstart the computer, but after the OS is installed the DVD drive can't
be accessed.
There are patches against 2.6.18 for the Marvell PATA controller here:

no hot spare activation?
While testing a zpool with a different storage adapter using my "blkdev"
device, I did a test which made a disk unavailable -- all attempts to
read from it report EIO.
I expected my configuration (which is a 3 disk test, with 2 disks in a
RAIDZ and a hot spare) to work where the hot spare would automatically
be activated. But I''m finding that ZFS does not behave this way

zfs raidz1 and traditional raid 5 perfomrance comparision
Hi,
for zfs raidz1, I know for random io, iops of a raidz1 vdev eqaul to one physical disk iops, since raidz1 is like raid5 , so is raid5 has same performance like raidz1? ie. random iops equal to one physical disk''s ipos.

ZFS error handling - suggestion
Howdy,
I have at several times had issues with consumer grade PC hardware and ZFS not getting along. The problem is not the disks but the fact I dont have ECC and end to end checking on the datapath. What is happening is that random memory errors and bit flips are written out to disk and when read back again ZFS reports it as a checksum failure:
pool: myth
state: ONLINE
status: One or more

determining raidz pool configuration
Hi all,
Sorry for the newbie question, but I''ve looked at the docs and haven''t
been able to find an answer for this.
I''m working with a system where the pool has already been configured and
want to determine what the configuration is. I had thought that''d be
with zpool status -v <poolname>, but it doesn''t seem to agree with the

Locally attached disk is seen, 40 gig PATA in USB enclosure is not.
Hi Folks,
When I boot ISOLinux, the locally attached disk is visible but the PATA
40 Gig in a USB attached enclosure is not. The locally attached disk
has no bearing on what I am doing and to avoid confusion will not be
mentioned again. Everything is happening on the 40 Gig.
Let me explain.
The goal is: Copy an installation iso to the disk, boot the disk and
install it on that disk. I have

SATA on Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2 MB
Hi Gang!
I've got this (now old) Gigabyte motherboard (GA-7N400 Pro2), I've had it
for just over 3 years.
I use it, so far, with only PATA devices.
I'm toying with the idea of buying a matched pair of SATA drives and when
I install Centos 5 (hopefully soon), building it with software raid (using
the two drives as mirrors of each other).
Now, I wouldn't have ever even thought of

ZFS configuration suggestion with 24 drives
Replacing my current media server with another larger capacity media server. Also switching over to solaris/zfs.
Anyhow we have 24 drive capacity. These are for large sequential access (large media files) used by no more than 3 or 5 users at a time. I''m inquiring as to what the best configuration for this is for vdevs. I''m considering the following configurations

CentOS & SATA
Does CentOS 4 work well with SATA drives?
Or should I build the system using IDE/PATA disks?
I'm looking for stability more than speed.
Thanks

SATA adapter recommendation
I have an old computer running CentOS 5. I need to add an SATA drive to
it, but it doesn't have any ports, so I need an add-on card. The board
only has a 32-bit PCI slot. Any recommendations on cards/brands that
work well with CentOS? I don't need any raid capabilities, I just need
a couple of SATA connections.
Thanks,
