trying to buy an Intel MLC SSD
The 80Gb Intel MLC SSDs have been hard to find in-stock and prices keep varying .... The original list price on the x25m 80Gb MLC drive was $230 - and it was *supposed* to be available for less than that. Demand has been high and a lot of on-line sellers have taken advantage of the demand to keep prices high. In particular, newegg.com, who usually have very keen pricing, has been selling the

Announcing NexentaCP(b65) with ZFS/Boot integrated installer
Announcing new direction of Open Source NexentaOS development: NexentaCP (Nexenta Core Platform). NexentaCP is Dapper/LTS-based core Operating System Platform distributed as a single-CD ISO, integrates Installer/ON/NWS/Debian and provides basis for Network-type installations via main or third-party APTs (NEW). disk drive sparing - questions not answers
I understand that ZFS provides fault data, via the zpool status command, that would (probably ??) allow a knowledgeable[0] zfs admin to determine (manually) when a zfs hardware element (today that''s usually called a "disk drive") might need "maintainence" or might need to be replaced. And there are sufficient features/facilities available in the current (b36+) release

Force SATA1 on AOC-SAT2-MV8
I have a supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 and am having some issues getting drives to work. From what I can tell, my cables are to long to use with SATA2. I got some drives to work by jumpering them down to sata1, but other drives I can''t jumper without opening the case and voiding the drive warranty. Does anyone know if there is a system setting to drop it back to SATA1? I use zfs on a raid2 if

Damm Small Solaris
Hi, for what it''s worth: There''s now a new Live CD for Solaris called Damm Small Solaris: http://www.sunhelp.ru/archives/179-Damn_Small_Solaris_0.1.1_English_Page.html In contrast to Belenix this Live CD works in Qemu - even without kqemu load the performance is not so bad. One important missing are the network driver for the network adapter emulated by Qemu. But they

Still more questions WRT selecting a mobo for small ZFS RAID
Like many others, I am looking to put together a SOHO NAS based on ZFS/CIFS. The plan is 6 x 1TB drives in RAIDZ2 configuration, driven via mobo with 6 SATA ports. I''ve read most, if not all, of the threads here, as well as sbredon''s excellent article on building a home NAS, yet I still have a number of unanswered questions. I was leaning heavily towards the M2N-E for a while,

Balancing reads across mirror sets
Hi all, I have an interesting project that I am working on. It is a large volume file download service that is in need of a new box. There current systems are not able to handle the load because for various reasons they have become very I/O limited. We currently run on Debian Linux with 3ware hardware RAID5. I am not sure of the exact disk config as it is a leased system that I have never

ZFS & small files
First - many, many congrats to team ZFS. Developing/writing a new Unix fs is a very non-trivial exercise with zero tolerance for developer bugs. I just loaded build 27a on a w1100z with a single AMD 150 CPU (2Gb RAM) and a single (for now) SCSI disk drive: FUJITSU MAP3367NP (Revision: 0108) hooked up to the built-in SCSI controller (the only device on the SCSI bus). My initial ZFS test was to

Best way to carve up 8 disks
Ok, previous threads have lead me to believe that I want to make raidz vdevs [0] either 3, 5 or 9 disks in size [1]. Let''s say I have 8 disks. Do I want to create a zfs pool with a 5-disk vdev and a 3-disk vdev? Are there performance issues with mixing differently sized raidz vdevs in a pool? If there *is* a performance hit to mix like that, would it be greater or lesser than building

high density SAS
Well Solaris SAS isn''t there yet but anyway just found some interesting high density SAS/SATA enclosures. <http://xtore.com/product_list.asp?cat=JBOD> The XJ 2000 is like the x4500 in that it holds 48 drives, however with the XJ 2000 2 drives are on each carrier and you can get to them from the front. I don''t like xtore in general but the 24 bay (2.5" SAS) and 48

SSD over 10gbe not any faster than 10K SAS over GigE
GigE wasn''t giving me the performance I had hoped for so I spring for some 10Gbe cards. So what am I doing wrong. My setup is a Dell 2950 without a raid controller, just a SAS6 card. The setup is as such : mirror rpool (boot) SAS 10K raidz SSD 467 GB on 3 Samsung 256 MLC SSD (220MB/s each) to create the raidz I did a simple zpool create raidz SSD c1xxxxx c1xxxxxx c1xxxxx. I have

ZFS encryption?? - [Fwd: [osol-announce] SXCE Build 105 available
It was rumored that Nevada build 105 would have ZFS encrypted file systems integrated into the main source. In reviewing the Change logs (URL''s below) I did not see anything mentioned that this had come to pass. Its going to be another week before I have a chance to play with b105. Does anyone know specifically if b105 has ZFS encryption? Thanks, Jerry -------- Original Message

ZFS Inexpensive SATA Whitebox
All, So I have started working with Solaris 10 at work a bit (I''m a Linux guy by trade) and I have a dying nfs box at home. So the long and short of it is as follows: I would like to setup a SATAII whitebox that uses ZFS as its filesystem. The box will probably be very lightly used, streaming media to my laptop and workstation would be the bulk of the work. However I do have quite a

CF to SATA adapters for boot device
Has anyone here had any luck using a CF to SATA adapter? I''ve just tried an Addonics ADSACFW CF to SATA adaptor with an 8GB card that I wanted to use for a boot pool and even though the BIOS reports the disk, Solaris B95 (or the installer) doesn''t see it. I might give the IDE version a go (I really wanted hoT-plug), otherwise I''ll be able to store a couple of thousand

Booth volunteers needed for Grace Hopper Conference
Hello LLVM Developers! Last year, the LLVM Foundation sponsored a booth at the Grace Hopper Conference. I had 2 amazing volunteers from the community, David Blaikie and Anna Zaks, help me spread the word about LLVM, compilers, and open source. It was a great experience and we are hoping to repeat this at the upcoming 2018 Grace Hopper conference in Houston, TX on September 26-28. I’m looking

How to auto-start and -stop xVM domains?
I''m trying to figure out what the CURRENT requirements are for configuring the xVM domains to start at boot-time and stop on shutdown. The closest to current I''ve seen is http://opensolaris.org/os/community/xen/docs/xVM_lowres.pdf which does not address the problem, and http://opensolaris.org/os/community/xen/docs/xvm-ktde-20070917.pdf which states: *
