Oracle and ZFS
Hi All ; One of our customer is suffered from FS being corrupted after an unattanded shutdonw due to power problem. They want to switch to ZFS. >From what I read on, ZFS will most probably not be corrupted from the same event. But I am not sure how will Oracle be affected from a sudden power outage when placed over ZFS ? Any comments ? PS: I am aware of UPS''s and

Performance with Sun StorageTek 2540
Under Solaris 10 on a 4 core Sun Ultra 40 with 20GB RAM, I am setting up a Sun StorageTek 2540 with 12 300GB 15K RPM SAS drives and connected via load-shared 4Gbit FC links. This week I have tried many different configurations, using firmware managed RAID, ZFS managed RAID, and with the controller cache enabled or disabled. My objective is to obtain the best single-file write performance.

j4200 drive carriers
apparently if you don''t order a J4200 with drives, you just get filler sleds that won''t accept a hard drive. (had to look at a parts breakdown on sunsolve to figure this out -- the docs should simply make this clear.) it looks like the sled that will accept a drive is part #570-1182. anyone know how i could order 12 of these?

Large scale ZFS deployments out there (>200 disks)
While thinking about ZFS as the next generation filesystem without limits I am wondering if the real world is ready for this kind of incredible technology ... I''m actually speaking of hardware :) ZFS can handle a lot of devices. Once in the import bug (http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6761786) is fixed it should be able to handle a lot of disks. I want to

using veritas dmp with ZFS (but not vxvm)
We have some HDS storage that isn''t supported by mpxio, so we have to use veritas dmp to get multipathing. Whats the recommended way to use DMP storage with ZFS. I want to use DMP but get at the multipathed virtual luns at as low a level as possible to avoid using vxvm as much as possible. I figure theres no point in having overhead from 2 volume manages if we can avoid it. Has anyone

ZFS versus VxFS as file system inside Netbackup 6.0 DSSU
Hello experts, We have a large implementation of Symantec Netbackup 6.0 with disk staging. Today, the customer is using VxFS as file system inside Netbackup 6.0 DSSU (disk staging). The customer would like to know if it is best to use ZFS or VxFS as file system inside Netbackup disk staging in order to get the best performance possible. Could you provide some information regarding this

Guest interface info under ESX driver
Hi, Is there a way to fetch the current IP address of a running guest domain (with VMware Tools installed) running on an ESX host? Ideally this would be doable via the libvirt Python bindings. Thank you. -- sengork

Distribued ZFS
Hi Ged; At the moment ZFS is not a shared file system nor a paralell file system. However lustre integration which will take some time will provide parallel file system abilities. I am unsure if lustre at the moment supports redundancy between storage nodes (it was on the road map) But ZFS at the moment supports Sun cluster 3.2 (no paralel acccess is supported) and new upcoming SAS Jbods

ZFS and VXVM/VXFS
We are looking at the alternatives to VXVM/VXFS. One of the feature which we liked in Veritas, apart from the obvious ones is the ability to call the disks by name and group them in to a disk group. Especially in SAN based environment where the disks may be shared by multiple machines, it is very easy to manage them by disk group names rather than cxtxdx numbers. Does zfs offer such

Can DTrace display non-instrumented function argument counts and types?
Is it possible to use DTrace to display the number of arguments and their types for userland or kernel functions that are not explicitly instrumented or documented by their authors? We''re talking about functions provided by Veritas VxVM/VxFS and the like, and for example, we might want to try tracing I/Os from App => VxFS => VxVM => ssd driver to see where I/Os get aggregated or

device name changing
Hi. If I create a zpool with the following command: zpool create tank raidz2 da0 da1 da2 da3 da4 da5 da6 da7 and after a reboot the device names for some reason are changed so da2 and da5 are swapped, either by altering the LUN setting on the storage or by switching cables/swapping disks etc.? How will zfs handle that? Will it simply acknowledge that all devices are present and the pool is

Customer questions
A few questions: 1. How does ZFS compare to Luster? 2. Is ZFS compatible with Veritas Netbackup Suite? 3. Does ZFS support bare metal restore (BMR)? Pointers welcome!! device alias
Hi. I''d like to request a feature be added to zfs. Currently, on SAN attached disk, zpool shows up with a big WWN for the disk. If ZFS (or the zpool command, in particular) had a text field for arbitrary information, it would be possible to add something that would indicate what LUN on what array the disk in question might be. This would make troubleshooting and general

Samba using ADS
Hello list, I am using Samba with ADS authentication. I am able to map drives and open and close files with no issues with the exception of Microsoft Outlook email files. So from within Outlook, I open one of these email files and I get an access denied error. Even if i put 777 permission on the files in question I get the same error. I am using LDAP as a user and group store if that means

# devices in raidz.
for s10u2, documentation recommends 3 to 9 devices in raidz. what is the basis for this recommendation? i assume it is performance and not failure resilience, but i am just guessing... [i know, recommendation was intended for people who know their raid cold, so it needed no further explanation] thanks... oz -- ozan s. yigit | oz at somanetworks.com | 416 977 1414 x 1540 I have a hard time
