ZFS storage appliance?
I''ve been doing a lot of reading about ZFS lately, and I''m quite enamored of its design goals. The reliability considerations are particularly attractive, and the snapshot scheme is more robust than anything I''m familiar with. I would very much like to keep my personal data in such a filesystem. Some time ago, I caught the launch of Drobo, a USB-connected box that does

Cannot remove slog device from zpool
Hello, I''ve looked quickly through the archives and haven''t found mention of this issue. I''m running SXCE (snv_99), which I believe uses zfs version 13. I had an existing zpool: -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... ZFS core contributor nominations
The time has come to review the current Contributor and Core contributor grants for ZFS. Since all of the ZFS core contributors grants are set to expire on 02-24-2009 we need to renew the members that are still contributing at core contributor levels. We should also add some new members to both Contributor and Core contributor levels. First the current list of Core contributors: Bill

RePartition OS disk, give some to zpool
I''ve got knee deep into learning how to use Opensolaris and zfs, and I see now that my goal of home zfs server may have been better served if I had partitioned the install disk leaving some of the 60GB to be added to a zpool. First, how much space does a working OS need. I don''t mean bare minimum but to be comfortable and have some growing room (on the install disk)?

Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8
Bouncing a thread from the device drivers list: http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=357176 Does anybody know if OpenSolaris will support this new Supermicro card, based on the Marvell 88SE6480 chipset? It''s a true PCI Express 8 port JBOD SAS/SATA controller with pricing apparently around $125. If it works with OpenSolaris it sounds pretty much perfect. --------------

Large scale ZFS deployments out there (>200 disks)
While thinking about ZFS as the next generation filesystem without limits I am wondering if the real world is ready for this kind of incredible technology ... I''m actually speaking of hardware :) ZFS can handle a lot of devices. Once in the import bug (http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6761786) is fixed it should be able to handle a lot of disks. I want to

NexentaStor 3.0.3 vs OpenSolaris - Patches more up to date?
I see in NexentaStor''s announcement of Community Edition 3.0.3 they mention some backported patches in this release. Aside from their management features / UI what is the core OS difference if we move to Nexenta from OpenSolaris b134? These DeDup bugs are my main frustration - if a staff member does a rm * in a directory with dedup you can take down the whole storage server - all with

Get your SXCE on ZFS here!
With the release of the Nevada build 90 binaries, it is now possible to install SXCE directly onto a ZFS root filesystem, and also put ZFS swap onto a ZFS filesystem without worrying about having it deadlock. ZFS now also supports crash dumps! To install SXCE to a ZFS root, simply use the text-based installer, after choosing "Solaris Express" from the boot menu on the DVD. DVD download

slog tests on read throughput exhaustion (NFS)
I have historically noticed that in ZFS, when ever there is a heavy writer to a pool via NFS, the reads can held back (basically paused). An example is a RAID10 pool of 6 disks, whereby a directory of files including some large 100+MB in size being written can cause other clients over NFS to pause for seconds (5-30 or so). This on B70 bits. I''ve gotten used to this behavior over NFS, but

Mirror and RaidZ on only 3 disks
Hi, I have a small Linux server PC at home (Intel Core2 Q9300, 4 GB RAM), and I''m seriously considering switching to OpenSolaris (Indiana, 2008.11) in the near future, mainly because of ZFS. The idea is to run the existing CentOS 4.7 system inside a VM and let it NFS mount home directories and other filesystems from OpenSolaris. I might migrate more services from Linux over time, but for

ZFS encryption?? - [Fwd: [osol-announce] SXCE Build 105 available
It was rumored that Nevada build 105 would have ZFS encrypted file systems integrated into the main source. In reviewing the Change logs (URL''s below) I did not see anything mentioned that this had come to pass. Its going to be another week before I have a chance to play with b105. Does anyone know specifically if b105 has ZFS encryption? Thanks, Jerry -------- Original Message

OpenSolaris ZFS NAS Setup
If it''s of interest, I''ve written up some articles on my experiences of building a ZFS NAS box which you can read here: http://breden.org.uk/2008/03/02/a-home-fileserver-using-zfs/ I used CIFS to share the filesystems, but it will be a simple matter to use NFS instead: issue the command ''zfs set sharenfs=on pool/filesystem'' instead of ''zfs set

Crossbow virtual router and firewall
I want to run a non-global zone as a virtual router and run ipnat inside the non-global zone, however, when I try to enable routing it can''t find route:default or network/ipfilter. creating a fast ZIL device for $200
Recently, I''ve been reading through the ZIL/slog discussion and have the impression that a lot of folks here are (like me) interested in getting a viable solution for a cheap, fast and reliable ZIL device. I think I can provide such a solution for about $200, but it involves a lot of development work. The basic idea: the main problem when using a HDD as a ZIL device are the cache flushes
