Syslog timezone issue
We recently upgraded (as in, backup, reinstall, selective restore) a couple of servers from CentOS-3.9 to CentOS-5.1. This generally went smoothly but we've encountered one confusing problem with syslog. Under CentOS-3, syslog entries were always dated in the host local timezone. With CentOS-5.1, they're dated in UTC *most* of the time, but occasionally in the local timezone. This has

Infinite loop shutting down xendomains
Pardon me for a long detailed post but this looks pretty serious. The bottom line is that, when I attempt to shut down or reboot my simple xen-2.0.7 server running FC3 with two domUs, shutting down xendomains appears to send python into an infinite loop. This may be due to a serious misconfiguration on my part but it is certainly a big problem. If we shutdown the domUs manually first, the

syslog flooding
Greetings; Nut pull & build from about two weeks ago, 2.4.3 I believe. Belkin UPS. I have everything working but a proper shutdown of upsd when I reboot, it hangs there and needs the hdwe reset button to reset it. That may be related to my finding more than 1 K##upsd and more than one K##upsmon, in /etc/rc5.d and which I have now nuked. However, while its working well enough to monitor,

No entries in the syslog, even though the LOG chains show counts
I have obviously done something on my system to cause it to no longer show Shorewall log entries in the syslogs, but for the life of me I can''t figure out what. Let me first give you some details about my config which will hopefully show why I think logging should be working, and perhaps you can tell me why it''s not. I am using version 2.0.9 from the debian sarge package

sendmail maillog rotation on centos 4
Hi, I'm trying to figure out which process is rotating my maillog every Sunday at 4:03 am. This happens on all of my centos 4 boxes. AFAICT, logrotate is not running. This is from a fairly minimal install, so I'm assuming this is a default process. --- [root at penguin ~]# ls -l /var/log/maill* -rw------- 1 root root 230603836 Sep 27 16:30 /var/log/maillog -rw------- 1 root

rsyslog as default syslog daemon?
Hi all! Is anybody here using rsyslog? I am looking for the right solution how to use rsyslog in CentOS 5 as the default logging daemon. We use it because of filtering using regular expressions. I switched from sysklogd to rsyslog simply using chkconfig --del syslog chkconfig --add rsyslog chkconfig rsyslog on service syslog stop service rsyslog start but this seems not to be

log rotation not working
Hello, I've got a Centos 5.4 box that is not rotating it's mail logs. I just found out about this, the file is considerably large. I've included my log rotation configs if anyone has any suggestions i'm open to them. Thanks. Dave. /etc/rsyslog.conf: # Log all kernel messages to the console. # Logging much else clutters up the screen. #kern.*

iptables logging
Hi All, A few years ago I was asked if I could redirect console messages from Iptables to a different virtual console, on RedHat 7.3 . I managed to do it, but can't remember how I did it, now that the same question has arisen ona Centos 3.4 box. I edited /etc/syslog.conf and redirected kern.* to /dev/tty2 for example & this didn't work I edited /etc/sysconfig/syslog and modified

rsyslog / rotation, best practices
centos6 in regards to /etc/logrotate.d/syslog the file is in charge of processing /var/log/cron /var/log/maillog /var/log/messages /var/log/secure /var/log/spooler If I wanted to make a specific setting just for maillog (since that file gets huge really quick) would I add 1- a new file /etc/logrotate.d/maillog with the parameters just like the other files 2- add parameters in the file it is

CentOS 6: Logrotate / selinux problem
Ever since a recent power failure I have been getting a Logrotate error. My machine is on a UPS -- it shutdown cleanly, but I suspect that its BIOS/RTC battery is dead, since the machine came up thinking it was 1982 :-(. I reset the clock and everything is fine, *except* I had to delete Logrotate's state files (which had bad dates). But now Logrotate is raising the error: error: error

Hi guys, I recently turned on IMAP zlib compression for Maildir and noticed that I've started getting these errors in the maillog. LXC and syslog seperation (/dev/log)
Hello, I'm seeing syslog messages "bleed" from the host and other LXC into the messages, maillog, secure logs of other LXCs. I'm using libvirt 1.0.0 on a host with systemd and kernel 3.9.10. Each LXC is running an older non-systemd linux distribution Is this a known issue? Is there a work around? Thank you for you time, Jim -- James R. Leu | Director of Technology | INOC

Double logging problem
Hi, I have a relatively new installation with LDAP and Postfix, running smoothly on CentOS but it logs dovecot messages both in /var/log/messages and in /var/log/dovecot.log. I have configured it to log in /var/log/dovecot.log (with syslog_facility: local1 and a respective line in syslog.conf, see below) but it also logs in /var/log/messages. As a result, I would expect it to only log into
