Dovecot 2.0.7 doesn't disassociate STDERR when it daemonizes.
At least it appears that way on my FreeBSD 8.1 system. This is probably
unnoticeable in regular use but I happen to use CFengine(v2) for system
configuration & monitoring. If it notices dovecot not running it tries
to start it and hangs.
I believe cfengine (cfagent) has created a pipe to monitor the start
commmand's stderr and is waiting for this pipe to close. This never
happens

Why i can't configure network and hostname with this kickstart file?
Hi, all.
I use this kickstart file to install CentOS 5.2 (both i386 and x86_64),
but i can't config NICs and hostname during installation, what's wrong
with it?
Thanks very much.

How do I manage manifests most efficiently...?
Hi
As I''m more familiar with cfengine and it''s way to split updates (in
update.conf) from the actual grunt work (in cfagent.conf), I''m
wondering how to best manage puppet and my manifests with puppet...?
Should I define a puppet class that copy the puppet package (in .tgz
format) and all the manifests to the client, and then have all my
other classes depend on

Kickstart and aliased network interfaces
Hi,
small(?) problem here:
We have several servers which have aliased interfaces (e.g. gigabit: one
alias points to the net the backupserver is in, the other one "connects"
to the filer the machine needs for work).
So I'd like to generate this setup with kickstart (yes, I *could* do
that with cfengine or other tools, but want to have the general config
in kickstart).
Alas:

Problem with definition of slist in CFEngine

minimal installation - kickstart error
Hi
I have inherited some kickstarts that attempt to remove some packages
that at some point its been deemed they are not required.
I am migrating all this over to cobbler but trying to get to the bottom
of this error that although the kickstart completes sshd cant start as
the package nss is not installed.
It fails with this

Kickstart, package always selected
I'm trying to kickstart a Centos 4.1 system with the minimum set of
packages. I have no use for ypbind so I'm trying to prevent from
being installed, but kickstart/anaconda always insist on its
installation (complaining that the package is missing). This is the

General questions and problems with exec...
Hi,
I''m in the process of evaluating puppet and cfengine for a rollout on
a mix of in-house servers and managed customer servers. I''ve always
been a pro-cfengine man, and it''s already running on a small setup of
5 machines. But even though I have pretty clear idea of how I should
proceed building the system, I''m intimidated by the vast amount of

URGENT: Skip installation ix86 packages from kickstart on 64bit arch?
Hi,
Has any one know how to skip ix86 packages from
installation in Centos kickstart? Most of our machines
have 64bit Intel/AMD CPUs, and it make non-sense to
still keep 32bit compatibility. Even worse of i*86
packages is, when upgrade we have to recompile both
ix86 version and x86_64 version to get an automatic
yum upgrade.
I know we could use 'exclude' option to exclude i*86
packages

CentOS 5.1 install via PXE Failure
Hi All,
This has to be something simple....but it's really busting my chops. We have
a PXE boot server that is used for initial installation of a number of
operating systems and it works well. However the CentOS 5.1 x86_64 install
is seriously broken.
We've made the PXE boot images available from
"centos/5/os/x86_64/images/pxeboot/" in the tftp boot etc. We've rsynced

Kickstart help
Hey all,
I have sort of an odd request for you today in regards to Kickstart
configuration. I have recently created a kickstart configuration file to
better standardize the configuration aspect of my server installations.
I am having one issue and that is distributing a script (yum-check) via
the kickstart file (in %post section). Parts of the script get written
to the correct file

cfrun equivalent
Is there an equivalent to cfrun in puppet. On the cfengine master you
can do the command cfrun <hostname> which allows you to tell the
cfengine client to run. This is useful for immediately pushing
changes out immediately (or telling the client to pull).

How to reduce the memory used by Samba and its connection ?
Dear Sir :
About the Samba, could you do us a favor to advise us if any comment =
about the following problem.
We used Samba v2.0.7.
We are porting the Samba into Linux box.
The Linux box is an embedded system with 32MB memory only.
Because Samba takes around 1.5MB memory for each connections, it =
takes lot sof memory for multiple connections.
It exhausted the memory of

Reorganizing Puppet Documentation
Greetings,
As the first step in a move to better organize the documentation,
we''re planning to reorganize it into more specific subsections. The
proposed subsections are listed below. If you have any feelings
about the reorganization or would like to call attention to a need

Kickstarting several *different* setups
Ansible, Bcfg2, Chef, Cobbler, Puppet, and Salt; I notice that
Spacewalk is not mentioned. Any particular reason that it gets no
recommendations?
What about CFEngine? Any comments on this one?

IRC Milestone
I know this is a basically meaningless milestone, but for some reason it
means something to me.
For the first time (as far as I know), #puppet on irc.freenode.net has
more users than #cfengine: 21 vs. 19.
Admittedly, that''s a low user count for #cfengine, but I''ll take it.

Allowing puppet to drop privileges for a manifest
Greetings,
Our environment consists of about 600 Redhat Enterprise Linux 3, 4, 5,
and soon 6 servers. We use cfengine 2 currently, but plan on
migrating to puppet. Right now, we have our root-owned cfengine
client running every 15 minutes from cron contacting a single cfservd
server. Additionally, our employees start their own cfengine and
puppet instances on on some servers running under
