NHW Project development
Raphael,
I do not believe it is possible to build a viable community around most hardware projects except super-universal based on very cheap/high-volume products like Pi or Arduino. We see the commercial benefits of Free Software/Open Hardware as it adds value to the hardware as users are ready to pay extra for the Freedom.

NHW Project development
Hi Andrey,
Thank you for your answer.Actually, NHW is very low-power so I think it
could be geared toward any hardware. But actually I don't have hardware
skills, so NHW is not a real hardware project for now maybe? I agree with
you that it is extremely difficult (for me) to build a community around
NHW, I'm certainly very bad/underskilled at it.Any help is welcome!
Cheers,
Raphael

NHW Project development
Raphael,
Some 15 years ago I implemented limited functionality Theora in our cameras FPGA (it took me 6 month of hard labor), and then gave up - it is a very crowded space and it is difficult to compete with more advanced codecs. And for our other work we anyway need almost raw image data, so we are using JPEG-based JP4 format (https://community.elphel.com/jp4) that we originally developed for

NHW Project - AOM AV1 comparison
Hi Silvia,
Thank you very much for your answer! Your opinion is much appreciated.
Your advice is wisdom, but very quickly to rectify or precise my situation,
I am finishing a 2-year job contract and there will maybe be a "vacation"
period before the next contract (if I find one), so I would like to invest
this time for the NHW Project, but that's right that image/video
compression,

NHW Project - speed comparison with x265
Hello,
I am very slowly working on the NHW Project.I recently made a speed
comparison with x265 and wanted to share it with you.
On my processor Intel Core i5-6400, in average the NHW encoder (totally
unoptimized) is x10 times faster to encode than x265 (png decoding time
removed), in average 30ms vs 300ms for a 512x512 24bit color image, and in
average the NHW decoder (totally unoptimized) is

NHW Project - some update
Hello,
I don't have advanced on the NHW Project this past month, but I have
definitely validated its characteristics and this new version.
The NHW Codec preserves or enhances image neatness and sharpness, which
translates that on good quality images the NHW Codec is globally better
than HEVC, and on degraded (with blur, artifacts) images it is worse than
HEVC because it lacks of precision. I

NHW Project - quality improvement for -l4,-l5 settings
Hello,
I have improved quality for -l4 and -l5 high compression settings. These
settings are now really better and very competitive, I now prefer them
compared to x265 (HEVC).
Update at: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/
I am also working on -l6 quality setting, I can simply increase
quantization for it but I am not totally satisfied with this solution for
now... Looking for more advanced processing

NHW codec
Hello,
I would like to discuss a little about the NHW codec and its state after
nearly 5 years on the Xiph forums.
I also know that if I would like to discuss I'd better go to the great
Doom9 and Encode.ru forums but for now I find that my codec is too
experimental for these professional forums:
- the codec is only for fixed 512x512 size, just a test tool.
- there is only mid compression

NHW codec
Hello,
I don't have advanced on the NHW codec, but now, as a lot of people, I am
following the AOMedia AV1 codec.Just a (late) update of my previous post,
there won't be problem in AOM AV1 with the CABAC scheme, as the codec will
use Daala's multi-symbol entropy coder and/or ANS.That's great! I have even
read on the wiki page, that AV1 will use Daala's PVQ as quantization

NHW codec - progress 2
Hello,
Just a quick message to correct what I have said in my previous post.It
finally seems not that easy to code small wavelet coefficients to have a
good precision, and SPIHT is certainly a very good algorithm for that, -and
I know there are SPIHT experts that can make very good SPIHT-based
codecs-.I have chosen a new and different approach, the multistage residual
coding, so I will try to

NHW Project - some advice
Hello,
Ok that's right HEVC and AOM AV1 are better than the NHW codec, even at mid
compression.I only tested my codec with quite neat images, hence the good
results, but on more blurred, more compressed images, HEVC and AOM AV1 are
definitely better, they are also exceptionnal at high compression.
So, yes that's right, the NHW codec has very little chance to penetrate the
market, it is

NHW Project - some news
Hello,
Nice to post here again! I wanted to give you a quick update of the NHW
Project as I met great people on this forum.
It is one year that I did not work on the NHW Project.I however made from
time to time some visual comparison with other codecs on my spare time.
Based on my visual comparison tests and subjective opinion, I can confirm
that I still find the NHW Project visually more

NHW Project - 2017 timetable
Hello all,
Just a quick message for those interested in the NHW Project.I realize that
I have too little time to spend on the project currently and I feel that
this year will be very important after 6-7 years for its success or not.I
already had some few replies from some companies (and a major one), and
they can not spend some time, spend some engineers on my work because there

NHW Project - How to find a sponsor?
Hello,
I am still working on very high compression for the NHW Project, but I find
the current version good, it has a good neatness of image, which I find
visually more pleasant than other codecs that are optimizing for PSNR,
SSIM,... Furthermore the NHW Project is still very fast and royalty-free.
I dedicated this past year to the NHW Project and I could make very good
improvements (like

NHW Project
Hello,
I have (slowly) worked these last couple weeks on the psychovisual model of
NHW because some people reproach me that it washes details out... so I
restored a little more details but this consumes some bits and actually it
turned out that it also decreases neatness, and so when you compare at the
same compression ratio, actually I find the current version visually better
because it has a

NHW Codec - aliasing
Hello,
I have just tested new next lower quality settings (-l3 and -l4), I can
diminish residual coding but if I increase wavelet coeffs threshold there
is more aliasing. And even in the current mid quality settings there is some
aliasing, this is the big drawback of the NHW codec.
SPIHT algorithm is good for that as for example Rududu codec doesn't have
aliasing at all at mid compression and

NHW Project - new -l19 "extreme" compression quality setting
Hello,
For those interested, I have added a new -l19 "extreme" compression quality
setting to the NHW Project. This -l19 quality setting is really competitive
with x265 (HEVC) on rather good quality images.
An important remark: we can really save 2.5KB in average per .nhw
compressed file as the entropy coding schemes are not optimal, especially
at extreme compression.I have the fast

NHW Codec - new study on 30 images
Hello all,
It's me again.Just a quick message to tell that I finally do not agree that
HEVC (don't have tested AOM AV1 for now) is better than the NHW codec at
mid compression.
Last night, I dowloaded 30 images of Star Wars Rogue One on the web and I
made another comparison with x265 (HEVC) for mid compression (-l2 to h2
settings for the NHW codec).
Visually, I prefer the results of NHW
