NHW Project - some update
I think Apple is somehow "attached" to the MPEG group. They control the "pools" too. Your codec sounds great. Google could -- if they wanted to -- use it but they have Web^M and webP. Look to Asia. Asus has just launched a new phone. ?? On Mon, Jul 9, 2018, 3:14 PM Raphael Canut <nhwcodec at gmail.com> wrote: > Hello, > > I don't have advanced on the NHW

NHW Project - some update
Hello, I don't have advanced on the NHW Project this past month, but I have definitely validated its characteristics and this new version. The NHW Codec preserves or enhances image neatness and sharpness, which translates that on good quality images the NHW Codec is globally better than HEVC, and on degraded (with blur, artifacts) images it is worse than HEVC because it lacks of precision. I

NHW Project - some update
Hello, Again I thank very much the Xiph forum members for their help and consideration for the NHW Project, really.I also realize I was a little unfair with Monty as just saying that Xiph.org can totally give some web space to document and advertise the NHW Project is already a very big help, it gives credit to the project,...! But the reality is that the NHW Project is a nearly dead project...

NHW v0.3.0-rc29 new version
Hello, For those interested, I have released the NHW v0.3.0-rc29 new version. I continue to fine-tune the nhw_kernel weights. This new version has then more precision and a better visual quality. I have made a "deeper" visual review at -q14 compression setting which is "high" compression, and I find now that at this setting NHW has a competitive precision with AVIF and VVC.If

NHW new release - bug fix
Hello, Just a quick message, I have fixed a bug in the last version of NHW because there could be a segmentation fault for some images.Sorry for the error. Correction and update on my demo page: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ Else very quickly I find that this last version has now a good balance between neatness and precision, and I find this visually pleasant, and more and more interesting, I

NHW Project - some update
Hello Spork! As your answer is highly interesting, I wanted to share it with the Theora community (hope you don't mind). You're right I should format the code properly, write more separated functions, make it a library,... short, turn it into something professional... It's a lot of work, and I wanted to finish the codec (very high compression) first... But any help is very welcome!

NHW Project - new release
Hello, For those interested, I have made a new version of NHW.This one has more precision and a little more neatness. I still find that NHW has a very good neatness -which I find visually more pleasant than AVIF and x265 for example-, and NHW is still extremely fast to encode/decode, faster than JPEG! There are still many improvements that can be done, first one is to adapt to any arbitrary

NHW Project - some news
Hello, Nice to post here again! I wanted to give you a quick update of the NHW Project as I met great people on this forum. It is one year that I did not work on the NHW Project.I however made from time to time some visual comparison with other codecs on my spare time. Based on my visual comparison tests and subjective opinion, I can confirm that I still find the NHW Project visually more

new -l16 "extreme" compression quality setting
Hello, I have added a new -l16 "extreme" compression quality setting to the NHW Project. This new -l16 quality setting is surprisingly good actually, because I find it better on some images than -l15 quality setting whereas files size is smaller.I notably find this new -l16 quality setting better than x265 (HEVC). More at: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ We can still save 2.5KB per

NHW Project - website, demo pages, algorithms dev,...
Hello, So thanks to helpful forum feedbacks, I know now that I have to create a website for the NHW Project, make demo pages of the technology, and all that with good visual design. It won't be such easy for me... For example, I can easily supply a description, explanation of the different steps of the algorithm, I can supply images encoded at mid-compression with NHW, x265, WebP, JPEG,...

NHW Project - Image comparison
Hello, Could some of you take a look at the image comparison between the NHW Project and x265 (HEVC) at high compression, available here: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ . I would be very very interested in your opinion, and it would help me to perfect the NHW Project. For me the NHW Project has more neatness, and x265 has more precision. Else, I was a little lazy these past months, as I

NHW Project - lower quality settings
Hello, I have re-tested -l4 high compression setting and it's clear that it lacks of precision on degraded, rather blurred images. So I don't know if it is a good idea to base the other lower quality settings (-l5,-l6,...) on -l4 setting.I have tested the NHW codec against x265, x264, Daala, WebP, Rududu, DLI and it's clear that at high compression these very good codecs have more

NHW Project - neatness metrics
Hello all, Finally find some time to get back to the NHW Project.I was thinking about making a technology demo, and I wanted to highlight the uniqueness of the NHW codec that is neatness/sharpness preserving or enhancement. With my eyes, I can see that the NHW codec has more neatness/sharpness than the other codecs (x265, x264, WebP, Rududu, JPEG,...), but for a demo there must be objective

NHW Project - How to find a sponsor?
Hello, I am still working on very high compression for the NHW Project, but I find the current version good, it has a good neatness of image, which I find visually more pleasant than other codecs that are optimizing for PSNR, SSIM,... Furthermore the NHW Project is still very fast and royalty-free. I dedicated this past year to the NHW Project and I could make very good improvements (like

NHW Project - some update & call for members
Hello, These last 2 months I have been in contact with a very impressive and friendly engineer from Intel who has written an article on my codec and the 4-5 new codecs in general that competes with HEVC.He finally answered me that as Intel is a founding member of the Alliance for Open Media and chairs several MPEG WG around HEVC, they won't be able to put extra resources on the NHW Project. So

NHW Project - high compression & community
Hello, I've found some time to get back to the NHW Project. In fact a Xiph forum member told me that even if I will start a new job, he hopes that I will still continue to develop a little the NHW Project, on my spare time.I told him that I would furthermore spend my spare time on the NHW Project if a community around the project could emerge... and he told me that certainly the best way for

NHW codec - precision
Hello, No advance for now on the NHW codec, I am still working on a new quantization scheme to scale down the compression ratios but without luck... Any advice, idea is very welcome.I will also have to correctly code the wavelet filerbank and process on rows and columns and suppress the image transposition (this is for long overdue)... will win few cycles... there are other parts to speed up (in

NHW Project - 2017 timetable
Hello all, Just a quick message for those interested in the NHW Project.I realize that I have too little time to spend on the project currently and I feel that this year will be very important after 6-7 years for its success or not.I already had some few replies from some companies (and a major one), and they can not spend some time, spend some engineers on my work because there is no
