I have to admit though, after reading through the flatpak website about it, I still don't understand how it could overcome the dependency problem with the skypeforlinux

compiling fedora srpm on CentOS
I tried installing fedora grpc srpm on CentOS and ran into following error when installing srpm. I understand fedora makes use of more recent versions of openssl, glibc etc but why should this happen when installing source rpm? Any pointers/articles on how to go about building fedora srpms on CentOS? Any way out other than building directly using sources? rpm -i grpc-1.17.1-3.fc30.i686.rpm

Installing a single rpm package from desktop/browser on CentOS 7
If I want to install a software package from a simple rpm file "the GUI way" on a CentOS 7 system, what am I supposed to do? If I open the file in the desktop, or alternatively, click on a link to a package in the browser and tell it to use the default app, gnome-software (I think) opens, but it just displays the message Sorry, something went wrong I mean, really? Isn't this

Installing a single rpm package from desktop/browser on CentOS 7
Unfortunately, the GUI isn't quite set up to tell you what the error would be. When you use `$ sudo yum install whatever.rpm`, the output in the shell will often give you a clue as to what's going wrong--a missing dependency, etc. -- Seth. Ping as regular user not allowed (CentOS Stream 8)
Following some update or the other (I think) on my CentOS Stream 8 system, I'm no longer able to use ping as a regular user; I get $ ping www.centos.org ping: socket: Operation not permitted Does anyone else see this? It it a bug, or were the system/default permissions deliberately changed? Can anyone suggest a fix/workaround? Actually, I can find several different ones via a simple web

CentOS 7 package not present in Red Hat EL 7 - qt-assistant
I'm using CentOS 7 for development of software that is sometimes used on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7. I conjunction with an update of one of the applications, I asked some Red Hat users to install the Qt 4 Assistant application via the qt-assistant package (which is used by a "help" function in our software.) It seemed like there was no such package in the Red Hat package set,

"Windows" share issue; access via smb:// fails, "mount -t cifs" works
Hi, Is anyone here using smb:// URLs to access "Windows" shares? I've been doing this for a while with common file systems at work, and it used to work just fine. Then I while back, I started getting issues; I will now just keep getting asked for a password when I try to access something through smb://. I thought at first that this meant there had been some kind of change

Specifying different options for different " smb" type gvfs mount
Hi, I'm trying to use smb:// URLs with gvfs-mount and/or similar desktop functionality to access SMB shares on different servers that support different protocol versions and features. With some of the servers, mount will fail with a default configuration, but I have been able to make it work by editing some of the "client" options in /etc/samba/smb.conf. The problem is, those

Boot failure after install on IBM x3550 M3
I'm trying to install CentOS 5.5 on a couple of servers of type IBM System x3550 M3, but it's not going too well. Actually, the install setup phase runs as expected, and the actual installation also appears to be successful, but the system will not boot - I just get a message (presumably) from BIOS saying that boot from hard disk 0. If I start the installer again after this, or boot

Dual Monitor setup on CentOS 6?
Hi. Is anyone here running CentOS 6 with dual monitors configured as a single X Screen? I'm trying such a setup on version 5 (again), using NVIDIA TwinView, and it works in many ways, but there are a number of problems that means it's not too usable - the most important one being that there appears to be no way to control which of the displays new applications/windows will appear

Eclipse (again)...
Hi Just thought I might ask my recent question about Eclipse again, only in a slightly different way: Is anyone here using the Eclipse version supplied with the CentOS 6 distro (as opposed to a build downloaded from www.eclipse.org)? Does it work for you? Are you able to install additional components via the built-in software setup mechanism? Thanks, - Toralf This e-mail, including any

CentOS 7/GNOME 3 customise top panel
Hi, Is there any way to customise the top panel in CentOS 7 with GNOME 3 (which I recently tried for the first time)? Specifically, I want to add "application launchers", as it will make start-up faster than the standard alternatives. (Because you can move the mouse directly to the right place - you don't have to carry out another action, wait for icons or menu items to pop up,

CentOS 6.5 VirtualBox
Hi Is anyone here using VirtualBox? I've had it working rather well for some time, but after some recent upgrade or the other it's started exiting with a Segmentation fault just after startup, before windows are opened or anything. I've tried a few different versions, all with the same result. I'm using binary packages http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/rpm/el. So,
