httpd: "internal dummy connection"
On my Centos 2.5 web server, in /var/log/httpd/access_log,
I saw several occurrences of:

      HTTP/1.0" 403 - "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS)

I have never seen anything like this before over many
years of watching my logs. I presume it failed because

DMZ hosts gateway
Hi everyone,
I have a question regarding the default gateway for hosts on DMZ zone. I moved servers from parallel to the DMZ (outside the firewall, directly connected to I-net) to inside DMZ. The default gw for these servers was the DSL router(bridge) of my ISP.
What should be the default gw (for the hosts inside the DMZ), when hosts are inside the DMZ now - still the DSL router (external

Firewall for virtual machines
I realize I'm not getting a lot of questions answered here lately, and
I'm going to presume that this is for legitimate reasons (i.e., people
don't know or are too busy to think about it), not because they seem
stupid (if they do, please tell me, on the list or privately).
I run Windows as a VMWare guest on top of my CentOS host, and I
generally have not used a firewall on the guest.

Shorewall 1.4.0 RC3
I anticipate that this will be the last RC unless problems are discovered.
Changes since RC2 include:
* The default route is now ignored when Shorewall is detecting masqueraded
networks. A warning message is issued if the default route goes through the
source interface (normally, the destination interface is the firewall''s
external interface and therefore, the default route would go

InstantRails and using it. I create an application and run up the
server "ruby scripts/server" and it runs up, but then when I try to
browse to it the browser just sits and spins and doesn''t connect :(

Help with "Updating Gem Source Index"
After hearing so much about RoR over the last few months, I finally
decided to give it a try. I decided to follow the "Rolling with Ruby on
Rails" article on ONLamp.com to get up and running.
Unfortunately, since that fateful decision, I have run into nothing but
obstacles.
First, I downloaded and installed Ruby. That was my last success event.
Then, I typed "gem install

Slow Copy WinXX - Linux/Samba :-(
I never thought it would happen to me, but it did...
I have read threads about slow copies from WinXX to Linux/Samba on the
list in the past, but I don't recall a concise answer regarding what the
cause was.
THE PROBLEM:
Trying to copy an 8 meg file from Win95 to my Linux/Samba box (named
"Nemesis" - for good reason), the transfer speed slows to a crawl. The
Win95 copy dialog box

IP of FW showing instead of server''s IP
Hi,
I have a 3 interface FW like this:
http://shorewall.greshko.com/GSLUG_files/slide0008_image004.png
where I use PROXYARP to give the servers in DMZ an IP from our public IP
range.
A bit like this:

Regarding xenstat [test.c:3:24: fatal error: xenstat.h: No such file or directory]
Hi
I am using xen4.0.3 in Opensuse11.4. I need to do the monitoring of VM''s
and on that basis take the migration decision so I am trying to write my
own xentop like program. But I am facing trouble while using xenstat.h in
my C program.
test.c:3:24: fatal error: xenstat.h: No such file or directory
But my xentop is working fine. What to do in this case. How to use

MSSql Connections cannot be established
Hi All,
I''m using shorewall on my laptop(2 NIC) to connect my desktop to the
Internal LAN.
For some reason, MS''s SQL query analyser is not able to connect to the
SQL server. I alway get the "Server does not exist"
I even tried to connect to it using IP address rather than netbios name
and it still doesn''t work. All of the access is fine. (eg: WEB/ping etc)

mongrel and reverse proxy security
Hi,
It seems that webrick cannot handle too much client and that luke is
making mongrel the ''default'' server to use so i wanted to switch to
mongrel. Then i read that i cannot use directly mongrel like webrick
because it does not speak SSL.
So my issue is : how to be sure things stay secure in the way that the
proxy should be the one speaking ssl and making client ssl

centos 6 vs 7
Issue: After installing vms on vmware, I noticed a difference in behavior
between centos 6 vs 7. On centos 6 I cannot ping the hostname and get a
reply without first resolving in the /etc/hosts file by adding a new entry:
192.168.0.47 server1.example.com.
But for centos 7 I am able to ping the hostname and get a reply even when I
have not made any changes to the /etc/hosts file. Why is there

Mapping other Inbox method (symlink vs ACL)
Dear Steffen,
Thanks for your feedback. Appreciate it.
By permission I mean (read, write, look-up seen). I dont think symlink
will allow these features.
ACL does support such features.
Only problem is that I have to setacl for individual boxes (ie
Inbox,Sent,Junk etc.)
