new cross-platform basic-statistics GUI
Dear R-announce list members,
I've submitted a new package to CRAN, Rcmdr, which provides a
cross-platform basic-statistics GUI for R. Rcmdr is based on the tcltk
package and uses only standard Tk widgets. It therefore runs under Windows
if Tcl/Tk support is installed with R, although it requires the
single-document interface (SDI). I've tested Rcmdr with Windows and Red Hat

cannot use package RcmdrPlugin.plotByGroup
Dear Lu Wei,
I'm the author of the Rcmdr package but not of RcmdrPlugin.plotByGroup, so if there really is a problem -- which isn't apparent from your message -- then you may wish to contact the package author.
First, as a general matter, menu items in the Rcmdr are grayed out if they're inappropriate in the current context. Rcmdr plug-in authors can use the same mechanism. So, for

Loading Rcmdr
Dear Jack,
There's not enough information here to know what the problem might be. Please see < https://www.r-project.org/help.html>, in particular the section on asking for help, and follow the link to the posting guide.
At a minimum, explain what you did and what happened. It's generally informative to provide the results of Sys.info() and sessionInfo() .

Tcl.Tk Tktable package missing from R 4.0.0 on Windows
Dear R-devel list members,
The Tktable package for Tcl/Tk is apparently missing from the Windows distribution of R 4.0.0. I (actually a user of the Rcmdr package) discovered this when trying to use the new-data-set dialog in the Rcmdr package, producing the error, "Tcl package 'Tktable' must be installed first."
I believe the Tktable has been part of the R distribution for

Return/print standard error in t.test()
It's not a problem per se to put additional information into class htest objects (hey, it's S3 after all...) and there is a precedent in chisq.test which returns $observed and $expected.
Getting such information printed by print.htest is more tricky, although it might be possible to (ab)use the $estimate slot.
The further question is whether one would really want to do that (change the

tcltk image reading problem (on a mac?): [tcl] encountered an unsupported criticial chunk type "eXIf"
Wayne,
that one is unrelated, but interesting - you can fix it with
sudo install_name_tool -change \
/usr/local/lib:/opt/X11/lib/libtk8.6.dylib \
/usr/local/lib/libtk8.6.dylib \
/usr/local/bin/wish8.6
There is a bug in tcltk with IDs on the libraries which I have worked-around for R, but not for wish.
Back to the original question - do you have any example of a file that doesn't

head.matrix can return 1000s of columns -- limit to n or add new argument?
Dear Herve,
Sorry, I should have said "matrices" rather than "data frames" -- brief() has methods for both.
Best,
John

I'd like to announce a new version, 1.3-0, of the Rcmdr package. The Rcmdr

Beyond small changes and additions, this new version of the package makes

new version of the Rcmdr package
Dear R users,
I'd like to announce a new version, 1.8-1, of the Rcmdr package. The Rcmdr
("R Commander") package provides a basic-statistics graphical user interface
(GUI) to R, implemented in Tcl/Tk via the standard R tcltk package.
Beyond small changes and additions, the new version of the Rcmdr package
uniformly implements a feature, first available in version 1.7-0, that
