Why software fails in scientific research
I came across this notice of an upcoming webinar. The issues identified in the
first paragraph below seem to me exactly those that the R project is designed
to address. The claim that "most research software is barely fit for purpose
compared to equivalent systems in the commercial world" seems to me not
quite accurate! Comments!

qbinom(p, size, prob = 0, lower.tail = FALSE) hangs (PR#6972)

OS: Mac OS X 10.3.4
Submission from: (NULL) (64.166.16.252)
a call like qbinom(0.3, 10, prob = 0, lower.tail = FALSE) hangs R. prob = 0 does
not
look interesting, but it can be useful for completeness when qbinom is part of
other general routines.
please see PR#5900 (Accuracy-fixed).

fast partial spectral decompositions.
hello,
i want to compute the top k eigenvalues+eigenvectors of a (large)
real symmetric matrix. since it doesn't look like any top-level R
function does this, i'll call LAPACK from a C shlib and then
use .Call. the only LAPACK function i see to do this in
R_ext/Lapack.h is dsyevx. however, i know that in LAPACK dsyevr
can also return a partial eigendecomposition. why is dsyevr not

'Bind'-method authentication for LDAP
Has there been any thought given to implementing authentication via an
LDAP 'bind', rather than by a password lookup and hash comparison? doing a
bind would obviate the need to make the passwords readable by the dovecot
process and would lend itself to improved security.
