Printers Always Paused - A Solution
I had a problem with Samba 2.2.5 with the printers being
permanantly paused to Windows machines. They could print OK - it
was only the status that was wrong.
The reason for this was because I had used the word office in the
printer name / comment. This was causing the parser which
recognises the printer status to find 'off' pausing the printer.
A quick fix for this is to replace the

Aw: Rsync differences using NFS & SMB
Hi Rolan,
I should have corrected that, my bad! It is an NFS client mounting the
NFS server, I.e. nfsClient:/some_dir_mounted_via_nfs

Ext3, Lots of Files, Slow performance
A recent thread has hinted on slow performances on large
directories (thousands of entries) on the ext2/3 filesystem. I
appreciate that the answer is to store these directories on a different
file system or to reorganise the way you store the files into
subdirectories.
I'd just like to ask has anyone done any tests to determine
approximately what the limit is before slowdown occurs.

Custom smbprint script for testing
Hello there,
I've produced a modified version of the smbprint script that comes
with the samba source.
The script is aimed to retry sending the print job if the windows
machine is switched off at the time of printing (samba seems to just
drop the print job after a period of time if the machine is off). This
script will mail you to tell you the machine isn't turned on yet and if

Located Latent Class Analysis (Uebersax)
Dear list members
I am new to the list and would be much appreciated if you could help me.
I am very interested in applying Latent Class Model for analysing multiple raters agreement data. I have recently found a paper by Uebersax, J. (1993) which described a method in a form of Located Latent Class Analysis (llca). Uebersax has written a Fortran program which is available on the web, for the

Oplocks, Oplock_break and request Oplock_break
Hello there.
I'm having a few problems using samba 2.2.3a and sharing a paradox database. On the whole
everything works fine but (there's always a but), every now and again. a machine's shares will
close causing the database to crash (sometimes only that machine) - the other networked
machine recover after a few error messages.
I guess the easy answer would be to disable oplocks

Rsync Daemon & network users
Dear all,
Can someone let me know if it is possible to setup an Rsync server with domain authenticated users e.g. Active Directory users rather than having username:passwords in plain text?
Thanks,
Simon

How to plot PCA output?
I have a decent sized matrix (36 x 11,000) that I have preformed a PCA on
with prcomp(), but due to the large number of variables I can't plot the
result with biplot(). How else can I plot the PCA output?
I tried posting this before, but got no responses so I'm trying again.
Surely this is a common problem, but I can't find a solution with google?

Rsync differences using NFS & SMB
Hi,
I’m having difficulties trying to understand the performance differences
between NFS and SMB. I have used rsync (OS X) over SMB (mounted network
storage) and using rsync (OS X) over SSH (NFS mounted storage)
From my test, rsync over SMB builds a file list each time comparing
modified source/destination, where as rsync over ssh/nfs is incredibly
quicker, pretty much instant.

Curve fitting,FDA for biological data
Dear all,
Another newbie just got attracted to this mailing list.
I am a biologist currently working my way through R, had sort play around with python earlier this year.
I have some data exhibiting periodicity ** my data consists of peaks and valleys, with peaks arising due to the presence of a repetitive structural unit,** with x being a reference grid (position along a chromosome) and y

state multi-state modeling using hidden markov routine in the msm package
Hello Chris,
I am trying to fit a 4 state multi-state model using hidden markov routine in the msm package.

bootstrapping the lme model
Dear all,
I have a data set o which I'd like to fit lme model. There are three factors
one of whoich is nested. This should be easy to do using lme in R, but the
problem ist that the data is highly non-normal. I was thinking about
bootstrapping the distribution but don't have much experience of doing this
in R and most references I find don't seem to go beyond the

Subsetting a data frame with multiple values and exclusions.
Hi all,
I realise that the convention is to provide a working example of my problem
but the data are of a sensitive nature so I'm not able to do that in this
case.
I need to query a database for multiple search terms:
db <- structure(list(ind = c("ind1", "ind2", "ind3", "ind4"), test1 = c(1,
2, 1.3, 3), test2 = c(56L, 27L, 58L, 2L), test3 =

Stats question: Comparison of the same individuals during two exposure times
Hi,
I'm hoping that someone will be able to help. I would like to compare how
covariates associate with the risk of a binary outcome during two periods.
Period 1 will be non-exposure to a treatment and period 2 will be exposure
to a treatment. The same individuals will be examined in each group but I
want to be able to compare the association of certain covariates between the
two groups to

Borland Paradox Databases on a samba share
Hi fans,
i tryed to use samba to share a paradox database which comes with a
special trade programs.
On a novell server it works fine. But on the samba share I get a
corrupted database after some minutes of multi user access. I've
tryed some entries in the smb.conf and I think a have a very
conservative setting now.
I heared of somebody who uses samba successfully with the same

Cox's regression analysis with Left truncated data
Hi,
I have a fairly simple question. I would like to use the survival package
to perform an analysis on data where an event can have occurred before
individuals were recruited into a study. I'm not sure how to do this using
the Surv() function. I would have a date of an event and then the enrolment
date would be after that. How do I put these two dates into the survival
function?

DHCP & Samba - Server can't see clients
Hi there,
I just playing around at the moment with the idea of putting in a DHCP server
alongside my Samba stuff. On my test server I'm having problems seeing the
client machines (test 4 or 5) in the DIAGNOSIS readme.
The server can see the clients as the general name search works and returns
the IP of the clients.
I think it's something to do with the DNS and WINS not wanting to
