OT: Why slow mail-check on wireless?
Ok this is admittedly OT, but when you want network advice you go to
where network gurus hang...
When popping mail from my primary mail server (Linux) from my linux
laptop a simple mail check takes 15 seconds to connect when using
a wireless nic (802.11g) and 1 second using the hardwired nic.
Popping my backup mailserver (also linux) which is sitting RIGHT BESIDE
the primary takes one second

odd problem with proxyarp and DNAT
I have some hosts in a DMZ zone with proxyarp. In my local zone I have a host to which I DNAT.
I have discovered that I can reach the host in the local zone by attempting to connect to the fw (As expected) or ANY proxyarped host in my dmz zone (as not expected). Is this normal ?
(I''ve just discovered that actually the dnated host answers to requests sent to any IP routed to my host!)

(no subject)
Hi, I have shorewall 2.0.8 installed on a linux box. Recently I moved
to a setup with a front/back firewall
With shorewall acting as a front firewall and M$ ISA Server 2004 acting
as a back firewall. I turned all ''intrusion alerts''
On at the ISA server expecting not to get any since shorewall should
block everything.
Now to the problem:
I am getting quite a few alerts

follow-up on ISA intrusion detection
Hi, I wrote a mail a few days ago concerning my setup with a front/back
firewall, shorewall being front and ISA server 2004 acting as back
firewall.
I said that ISA server is logging some "intrusion attempts" namely
requests coming from external interface to the internal network.
As this shouldn''t happen (all intrusion attempts should be stopped by
shorewall) I begun to

two subnets
Hello,
My server is on Mandrake 10.1 off.
eth0 is WAN with static IP connected 512 DSL
eth1 is LAN.
I have NAT working on 192.168.0.0.
I want to feed a second subnet 192.168.21.0.
What is the best way to implement it ?
Thanks

maclist or rule question
Hi,
I want to automate some of the maclist and rule functionality:
User connects to the network and gets a DHCP address from the shorewall box.
Using squid and redirection, all the user can do is go to a login page
on the firewall
User logs in correctly to the form on the webpage and a process captures
MAC and IP address info from the dhcpd.leases file
Once authenticated, a maclist entry and an

Fw: setting an exception source to a redirect rule?
I recently setup shorewall on my freshly rebuilt router box.
I setup transparent proxying using transproxy/dansguardian/privoxy/squid.
My current rules for the redirect are:
REDIRECT loc 81 tcp www - !192.168.100.0/24
ACCEPT fw net tcp www
How do I set this so that all the request are redirected except for requests FROM a certain machine (192.168.100.11)?

SuSe 9.1 startup issue
Tom,
I am NOT subscribed (yet). I dropped SuSeFirewall2 in favor of
shorewall to get past the configuration hurdles I as experiencing.
At the moment, when my SuSe 9.1 starts up, I can see shorewall processing
the rules, policies, etc. and I see no errors and then moves on with the
rest of the SuSe boot process .
However, no traffic passes through using the rules.
I run an iptables -L and I

Want to log all ISP traffic to ULOG
I want to use fprobe-ulog (http://fprobe.sourceforge.net/) to generate
NetFlow information about traffic going through my router. The question
is how to get the logging rules added to the appropriate chains (I''m
assuming eth2_in and eth2_out in my case)? I''m using the perl version
of shorewall 4.0.6.

FW: Shorewall and selective access
Shoot!
Sorry Tom. I thought I replaced your e-mail address with the shorewall list
address.
I got it working!!!
I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. Pays to write down what I want
to accomplish versus flying by the seat mof my pants.
The ACCEPT+ is G R E A T! Took care of some of my issues along with removing
the redirect rule (yeah, yeah...I should have thought it over more

I''m writing an article about Rails and I need help
Hi to everybody, I''m writing an article about Ruby on Rails and I need
to gather some information about the project and the community of core
developers. In particular I''d like to know something about the
organization of the project (how are decisions taken, who decides what
goes into the project, conflict resolution, contributions acceptance...)
and something more technical

Grim Fandango in wine
Hey all,
It's a thorn in my side, I had monkey island 3 running in wine, but this
one just doesn't cooperate. The setup program exits with a problem copying
install files (error 112, if it means anything). If anyone has got it
working, let me know.
Thanks

Programs under wine can't connect to the network
Hey all
Have a very strange problem in slack 8, using wine 20011004. First noticed this with counterstrike, than checked with other programs that should access the net.
I get this error, and programs fail:
fixme:winsock:_get_sock_fd handle 304 is not a socket (GLE 6)
Documentation seems to imply that if I can get on the net with linux, I should be able to use wine with it. Weirdest part is

Better way to create tables of mean & standard deviations
Hi
I'm trying to create tables of means, standard deviations and numbers
of observations (i) for
each laboratory (ii) for each batch number (iii) for each batch at

I created these functions:

Specify rule bypass by domain with wildcards?
I have a rule setup to transparently proxy all normal web traffic
through Dan''s Guardian for filtering.
However, there are a few sites that simply do not work right through a
transparent proxy.
The biggest of these is yahoo mail.
Most sites are not a problem to add to the exemption list.
Yahoo, however, apparently uses many servers for the webmail system.
There is the main server
