Performance tests
I did some testing of vorbis codec (Winamp plugin) on a Pentium 166 MMX, and found that the performance is pretty good. I got 3 % cpu utisization if I turned dithering off, and 5 % otherwise. This was with a 138 kbit song. It's pretty long to mp3 performance that was 0 to 1 % on that machine for a 128 kbit song. Also vorbis seems to have a larger working set, because if I play two songs at

[LLVMdev] MMX/SSE subtarget feature in IR
Your clang invocation below works for me, and generates target triple in the llvm IR of i386. And then in the specific options for the functions it generates the following: ; Function Attrs: nounwind define float @foo() #0 { entry: ret float 1.000000e+00 } attributes #0 = { nounwind "less-precise-fpmad"="false" "no-frame-pointer-elim"= "true"

Proposal to remove MMX support.
I recently diagnosed a bug in someone else's software, which turned out to be due to incorrect MMX intrinsics usage: if you use any of the x86 intrinsics that accept or return __m64 values, then you, the *programmer* are required to call _mm_empty() before using any x87 floating point instructions or leaving the function. I was aware that this was required at the assembly-level, but not that

G.729a beta codec on old Pentiums
Hi, I've been trying to get the G.729a beta codec running with my remote Asterisk box that talks IAX2 to my local Asterisk box. Digium fixed the problem I was having in registering the beta codec, so that now works fine. I've removed the old codec_g729b.so from /usr/lib/asterisk/modules and put in place the codec_g729a.so beta from digium FTP. My CVS build of Asterisk is about a

[LLVMdev] [PATCH] Do not generate nopl instruction on CPUs that don't support it.
Hi This patch fixes code generation bug - 586-class CPUs don't support the nopl instruction and some 686-class CPUs don't support it too. I created bug 17792 for that. BTW. I think you should also optimize padding on these CPUs - instead of a stream of 0x90 nops, you should generate variants of "lea (%esi), %esi" instruction like gcc. This patch disables generation of

MMX/3dNow! etc
Hi, I´m new on this list so I really don´t know that kind of questions have been asked, but here I go. Is the current ogg plug-ins using any mmx or 3dnow! instructions? Is there any performance to gain? I know that most of the mp3-decoders uses mmx/3dnow! to decode mp3streams so in theory it would be applyable to ogg to...? Just a thought... [LLVMdev] [PATCH] Do not generate nopl instruction on CPUs that don't support it.
Please include a testcase with the patch. gas uses " nopl 0x0(%eax)" for k6_2. Are you sure it is a gas bug? Check if VT is enabled
Hello group, I recently purchased an HP m7360n computer which has an Intel Pentium D 920 processor in it. Unfortunately there is no BIOS option to enable or disable VT. The board it sits on uses the Intel 945P chipset. If I am in linux and do a ''cat /proc/cpuinfo'' I get this: [root@localhost ia32]# cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family

APIC error on CPU0: 60(60)
I have a lot of this errors in my Centos stock 4.3 version in an Intel D945gnt motherboard with a Pentium D (dual core) If I disable apic in the grub.conf (apic=off) will I get a performance hit? Im running Asterisk on that machine. 40 is Received Illegal Vector 20 is Send Illegal Vector 60 means you're getting both errors at the same time. Basically it means that the APIC bus messages are

Re: My domU cpuinfo shows "cache seize: 16KB" ater upgrading to Xen-3.3.0... but in Xen-3.2 it has 2048KB!
No one knows about this?! It''s normal for domU in Xen-3.3 to have only 16KB of CPU cache size? Thanks! Big thanks for supporting i586 type machines.
While I know that, technically, the only i586 machines are the Pentium and Pentium MMX, it is still nice that I can use some headless AMD K6/2 machines I have lying around for CentOS 4. Many thanks for the effort expended to get that working. -- Lamar Owen Director of Information Technology Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute 1 PARI Drive Rosman, NC 28772 (828)862-5554 www.pari.edu

FAQ : CPU requirements ? and other
Hi! <p>First the question "How fast are the encoders/decoders?" ( quoted below ) in the FAQ ( http://www.vorbis.com/faq.psp ) should be updated to include v1.0. What is the phrase "most commercial audio encoders" referring to ? commercial vorbis encoders ? Quote : --begin quote--- How fast are the encoders/decoders? Right now the encoder is about as fast as most
