Hi Goeff,
Thanks for your precisions. You wrote: "Internet connections are also
expressed in bits, or kilobits, not Kilobytes"; then I guess a connection of
1Mb is also 1 megaBITS and NOT megaBYTES. There is something I don't
understand; how are affording small radios that have up to 1000 concurrent
listeners a 128Mb connection? Is there any magical solution I am not aware
of?

Hi everybody,
I have a theoretical question here.
A 128K stream is a 128 KiloBITS (NOT kiloBYTES) per second stream; am I
right? Is a 512k internet connection a 512 kiloBITS or 512 kiloBYTES
connection?
128 KiloBITS = 16 KiloBYTES (8 bits = 1 byte). I am wondering if a 512k
connection (upload and download) could THEORITICALLY handle 4 (512/128) or
32 (512/16) 128k streams?
I am confused

Right.

Internet connections are also expressed in bits, or kilobits, not
kilobytes. In this sense, calling it a 512k connection is actually wrong,
as this implies kilobytes, not kilobits.

Hi Oddsock,
Like Clement, I am sure Nullsoft is still "offering" AOL's bandwidth since I
think Nullsoft is not part of AOL anymore. About the new broadcasting
methods, is the multicast technology already available? I have heard only
few providers are equipped with multicast enabled routers. What about p2p
streaming, is it really reliable? When I see Peercast's statistics, only

Hi,
Our webradio (Let's Go Zik - http://www.letsgozik.com) works with
donation and partenship. I think it's the only way to keep a webradio
alive for the moment... We are making our radio in a associative way...
It's quite hard to "find" listeners. Currently we are nearly
broadcasting for 60 simultaneous listeners (and approx. 5000 differents
listeners per months)...

Relay of title info
Hi Icecast users!
I have a Debian box running with Icecast 1.3.11, installed from package
icecast-server 1:1.3.11-4.3 from the unstable tree.
It's purpose is to relay a bunch of stations using the alias
functionality. It all works like a charm except the title information.
When relaying stations like Groove Salad from soma.fm WinAMP doesn't show
the title info.

g729 and latency measures
Hi, we have set up a small project in a school the following way:
SITE_A(4 port analog to ip
g729)------ADSL_ISP1-------ISP2--------Asterisk-----PSTN
Site A has 1 Megabit of bandwith (up 512kilobit down 1 megabit)
The asterisk box gets internet service via a wireless antenna. 1 Mbit
of up/down bandwith
Comments:
So far, this means that I will need licenses for the 729.
asterisk only supports 20ms

Hi,
~ I have just installed Ice cast and I really like it. I want to
stream a radio station which expects 6000 concurrent listener. I was
thinking of using an SMP machine with Linux running.
Does Ice cast make use of SMP, does anyone have sizing references .

Player Problems
Hi Everyone,
Has anyone come across problems listening back to Mp3
streams using VLC?
The reason I ask is that we [ResonanceFM] stream at
128K and at 24K (using two different Icecast
instances). All players (Zinf, Winamp, Media Player
etc) can play both streams bar VLC which seems to
exhibt a skipping (i.e like the sound of a CD) problem
when playing the 24K stream. Incidently it plays the

Yes, assuming you mean kb/s (kilobits, not kilobytes, per second), and
no more than 2 channels (stereo).

format(object.size(...), units): KB, MB, and GB instead of Kb, Mb, and Gb?
I cannot remember if this has already been discussed or not, and I'm a
bit worried I'm throwing off an endless debate. If it's already
settled, no need to discuss it further.
TOPIC #1:
Shouldn't R use KB, MB and GB when reporting on sizes kilobytes,
megabytes and gigabytes? More specifically, format() for object_size
objects (returned by object.size()) uses Kb, Mb and Gb, which

SMP support
Hi,
I have recently installed an Icecast 2.3.1 on a couple of dual Xeon CPU
x64 server. The server is configured with chroot & changeowner.
In order to have an idea of a server's capabilities, used the curl-based
script given in http://www.icecast.org/loadtest1.php. I have around 3.5k
connections from one server to the other one, on an unique 170Kbps MP3
mountpoint, totalizing 720 Mbit/s

Nullsoft Vorbis Decoder v.1.11a Bug Report
Hi, there.
While waiting for the encoder RC1, I will report some minor problems
I experienced with Peter's Winamp decoder.
First, I am using Nullsoft Vorbis Decoder v.1.11a with Winamp v.2.76
on Windows 98 SE.

in playlist screen seems to be flickering when an Ogg file is being played.

Streaming Hold Music
I've tried getting this running but mpg123 won't spawn. It spawns fine for
the files but if I try streaming she doesn't work.
I've tried with just about every stream at somafm.com w/o success. I can
play them locally though.
When I try to play them from the server from the command line I get:
