automatic gain control
>Fromwhat you describe, your comp/limiter can't possibly be working correctly. It should be the last unit in line before the sound card, and needs to be adjusted properly. You also need to balance the levels on your mixing board (so that the correc t level comes at predictable place on the slider). It might be worthwhile to find someone with some sound-mixing or radio engineering experience

the ACG function that the compressor provides is limited at best. its adjustment is way too audible to make full use of it in balancing levels. yes, it is last in the chain. i'm just wondering if there's anything out there in the way of software. if a minidisc recorder can do it, why can't a $1000 pc? -p > From: "William Goldsmith" <wildbill@kpig.com> >

we're actually using a furman c/l already, but the levels coming into the mixer are still all over the place. one mp3 might be much louder than another, the phone interface is way too loud, the dj mic is too quiet, etc. usually one of the planners ends up sitting by and adjusting the igain in aumix. is there any software-based solution? it seems like it wouldn't be all that hard to

Sounds like you need to fix the problem at the source first: balancing the levels going *into* your mixing board so that they're not all over the place coming out. You'll never fix that with any hardware or software device. I use a program called ecasound to do software dynamics processing, but you'd have to hack liveice pretty extensively to use it in that situation. Software

Applying dynamic compression to live audio
Hi: I want to stream audio from my soundcard, but I'd like to apply some dynamic compression to it first (ala winamp's audiostocker plus shoutmuxer thingy). I heard rumours of compression in liveice, but Iv'e been told that this only works when it plays from prerecorded MP3, not the live input. I'd like to do this with darkice, but can't see how it could be done. I guess

No sound (ices-2.0.0, RH9)
Hello, I've successfully installed Icecast 2.0.0 and Ices 2.0.0 on a Compaq EvoN600C running Redhat 9. Everything runs quite well (no error loggued by Icecast or Ices), the Ices stream is seen as a source by Icecast and friends are able to listen to my radio (I see them as listeners in Icecast admin)... the problem is that they ear only silence ! Looks like the streaming is OK but Ices could

If Ogg is independant of the type of stream it is transporting, how come I am unable to add or edit the metadata on OggFLAC files? Gain control
How are people doing gain control, out of curiosity? I know boxes exist (anyone have names and mfrs?) that ride the gain for big radio stations, ensuring that there is no distortion and raising the volume of songs recorded at a lower volume. I'd probably buy one if I knew what to buy. ------ Dave Hayes - Consultant - Altadena CA, USA - dave@jetcafe.org Now Playing at:

Mic not working with skype
I've just installed a beta version of skype in CentOS 5.3 and everything seems fine - the mic is working OK as I can hear it through the speakers (feedback). Problem is I can't get the mic to actually work with skype (eg with skype call testing service) - it may be that one of the many settings is incorrect - has anybody else had this problem and got any suggestions please? regexp problem on R 1.7.0
Hi, Am I missing something in using regexps in R? Below, 'egrep' means invokation of the command from the shell prompt. # I have > as.character(block.dist.vals) [1] "1e+06" "2e+06" "5e+06" # that I wish to convert to: "1" "2" "5" # OK (R and egrep) > sub( "e.+06", "", as.character(block.dist.vals) )

Yes, I did : in fact, aumix from the command line behaves exactly like the KMix GUI : when I change the PCM or Mic level with aumix, KMix shows the new settings. But even with aumix set to the good values (PCM to 100%), ices get no sound.

How to 'stamp' a plot with meta-data?
Dear R users, Sometimes, for tracking purposes, I am interested to add to a plot some metadata such as * the date it was produced * filename that stores the plot * perhaps data sources, author, etc Ideally, I would like to be able to do this for any kind of plot, plot(), barplot(), hist(), etc.; and, to be able to produce plots with or without the metadata by a simple toggle mechanism.

Polycom wideband codecs?
Doing a little research before Friday's Voip Users Conference call with Dan Behringer. Are any of the newer Polycom wideband codecs implemented in v1.6? Specifically, G.722.1 or G.722.2?
