Increasing number of channels?
The stream header only has 3 bits for the channel count, so it's not possible to support more than 8 channels without breaking compatibility with all embedded products that support FLAC, not to mention old and existing software. Part of the benefit of FLAC is that it enjoys such wide support across computer operating systems and embedded devices like audio players and digital recorders -

Hello, Ok, I will post them in a folder on Google Drive and will give the link on my blog page, -because among other things, on my blog page, I can not display 2 bitmap 512x512 images side by side-... x265 and NHW comparison images posted to https://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/?
Hello, First I have added a link on my demo blog page to Google Drive for the image comparison folder of NHW and x265 on rather good quality images. But be sure, as soon as you have sent me a free alternative host, I will upload there too! Link (for now) on: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ Do not hesitate to let me know if you would share the opinion that NHW is globally better than x265 (HEVC) at

Also, don't forget the option I gave you Ralph, where you can have access to one of my VPSes. We can create a subdomain for free, but if you want something like nhw.com, you'd have to register the domain name yourself, which wouldn't cost too much money.... Then I can help configure it to point to your page on my VPS. I'll host it all for free. You'll have your own user

Define 6.1 and 7.1 channel mappings
I vote for documenting the --channel-map option in the --help I don't like the idea of rejecting a multichannel file merely for mapping, so there should be a documented option plus an error message pointing to the option. This should compare to the WAVE and AIFF errors where the utility suggests to the user how to get the file converted safely. Brian Willoughby Sound Consulting On

Professional surround mastering is delivered on very specific media, and FLAC is not an option (to my knowledge). I use FLAC for archival of original

NHW Project - some results
Hello, Just a quick message to let you know that I get back to NHW Project currently. I downloaded 20 images from the Internet with rather good quality (mainly faces), I compressed them at high compression -l7 setting with the NHW Project, and on 19 images out of 20, I visually prefer the results of NHW compared to x265 (HEVC)!!! -I can make available these 20x3=60 512x512 24bit bitmap images

Flac multi channel
Don't overlook the FLAC in Ogg container solution. That's established as a standard for some time now, as far as I know, and would probably be better than a new, proprietary multi mono bundle. I haven't used it myself, but people have been talking about it for a while, and I believe that some "FLAC" users are actually working with FLAC in Ogg container files. Brian

DRM and Ogg Vorbis ??
Dear all, I would like to know whether it is possible to use any DRM scheme with Ogg-Vorbis ? My idea would be to distribute music commercially and be able guarantee to artists that they won't be copied freely. Thanks for your advice. Multi-channel with empty channels.
All, Lets say I have a 16 channel file, but 10 of those channels are empty (all values are 0). For a) the vorbis codec and also b) the FLAC codec ... would the size of the file be close to (or practically the same as) the size of a 6 channel file? Etienne

Audio tracks and channels in OggFLAC
Hi all, I'm getting mired in conflicting and dated information, so I think I need to ask this of live humans... :-) I'm essentially trying to create an Ogg file that works like DVD video does. In particular, in addition to the Theora video stream, there will be multiple audio "tracks" (By "track", I mean a collection of channels to be played all at once, but only one

I believe you can do this with Ogg FLAC. The Ogg container manages the multiple FLAC streams. Theoretically, we'll never see limit

Multichannel, usage & players?
Hello to the list, and please forgive me if this has already been asked before. (I am new here, you see) The question is really simple: Can I use FLAC to create multichannel files, ranging from 3-channel LCR, through Quad, 4.1 to 5.1 and possibly (later) above? The projects details are essentially this: DVD-Audio, containing MLP Lossless in stereo & surround/multichannel. Video_TS folder

More than 8 channels possible?
Hello, First, thanks a lot for FLAC. A few questions. Apologies if this is not the right forum or if these questions have come up before; the SourceForge archive search didn't turn up anything. 1. Would it be possible for FLAC to support more than 8 channels? 2. If (1) is not desirable because it would break compatibility or some such, then is it possible to build a local copy

Idea to possibly improve flac?
Cool, thanks for all the great comments. I think we agree now on that the "find mp3 before encoding" feature would not be a good idea to implement in the flac core. As Brian pointed out, it might be a better idea to create a program that automatically checks if a flac might have been an mp3 source. My first suggestion was to use FFT, because I know that 128kbps mp3 have a low-pass
