hmm, let me ask this question, another way... which setting offer the least compression ?. I think he might be concerned with audio quality, and doesn't quite understand what "lossless" really means! Level 1 uses far less compression than level 8. In terms of compression, the lower the "level" the less compression used (and the larger the resulting FLAC file). Hope that helps. -Brad On 7/12/07, Rick <cms0009@gmail.com> wrote: > > I try to make it easier for you to understand, > I do understand about lossless format, hence I installed flac, > second,

ReplayGain support for Vorbis
Hello all, I'm glad to announce to you that Vorbis now has full ReplayGain support. If you're not familiar with ReplayGain, take a look at www.replaygain.org. The main features are: a) all songs play back with equal loudness b) removes the need for normalization c) allows for clipping prevention Using it is very simple. Get a compatible decoder (ogg123, XMMS and WinAmp all support it

EAC + FLAC bitrate question?
This is more of an EAC question, but I have not yet received an answer from my post on that page. Since they are closely related I thought I would give it a try here. I just bought a BIG stack of CDs (70+) and decided to recheck all of my EAC (beta 4) + FLAC (1.1.2) settings prior to ripping and encoding them. I also calibrated a new external Plextor CD-ROM too. The setting string I use in

Feature request FLAC
Dear all, I am an active FLAC user and like the program a lot! Thanks for your great work. Since I am not a developer I cannot modify the program on my own. Maybe you might be interested in features I would find useful. Maybe others find them interesting as well and you find the time to implement them. 1. Add encoder options: a) Skip silence (leading and ending) would give the option to skip

Playing FLAC Files on Audi MMI
Hello, I am hoping that perhaps you know the answer to my car audio question, or can at least point me in the right direction. I own a 2013 Audi S4 that has the 3G-Plus Multi Media Interface (MMI) with the Bang & Olufsen Sound System. The MMI is able to playback lossy, compressed audio files (MP3, WMA and AAC), but does not have native support for FLAC, ALAC, or WMA Lossless.

Replay-gain
Hello everyone, I'm new to this flac thing (started about a week ago) but I have read a lot about flac and replaygain. As far as I understand it, replaygain is lossless in the sense that I can tell my player to ignore the settings or I can even use foobar2000 to remove the tags entirely, hence getting back to the original audio. If that is the case, why is there a warning in the foobar2000

FLAC CD Archive
I see that this was the right place to fire off this question. Thanks for your feedback. It has given me a base to start some trials. I used to use EAC on Windows, but I tend to only use open source software as much as possible and I don't use Windows any more. I gave a brief look at abcde, but it is clear I need to look at this some more. It looks like it has the potential to do everything I

[Flac-users] CD archival best practices?
Goals: 1. Store meta data 2. Be able to recreate and burn bit-for-bit accurate audio CDs from archive. 3. Be able to "generate" lossy format files (OggVorbis,MP3,etc) with meta info intact when needed. 4. One file per song. 5. Files playable in XMMS and WinAMP3. Questions: Q1. OGG vs FLAC container? Q2. Meta data format? Q3. In detail, how does one do goal 2? Q4. What ripping/encoding

wav/raw normalization
Hey all. I was an "early" adopter of mp3 (1994-1995), and I took great pains to use digital audio extractors and avoid jitter and whatnot thru proper hardware - back then, this was no mean feat. Well, I'm starting to switch to Ogg (dragging out all the CD's, starting over) and I want to know if anyone has an informed opinion on the merits or demerits of "normalization"

Lossless/lossy hybrid?
Monkey's Audio lossless compressor (currently win32 only, free but not open-source except decoder) author is thinking to implement a kind of audiophile-quality lossy compression which would filter "noise bits" that are hard to encode lossless but which are (or should be) inaudible and thus improve lossless compression (avg. 300-450kbps). I think that implementing something like this

Rick, Mark asked "why" you want the least amount of compression. I think we still do not understand your goals. If you can give us a hint at what you're trying to accomplish in your search for the least amount of compression, that might help us find the right answer. uncompressed FLAC
Hi i have seen that the dbPowerAmp ripping and encoding software supports a new so-called "FLAC uncompressed" format, e.g. http://www.audiostream.com/content/dbpoweramps-flac-lossless-uncompressed-wish-come-true i know only the normal flac compression levels from 0 to 8. have i missed an option on the flac comamnd line tool or how could i achieve that on the linux command line flac

best way to ensure integrity of flac source files?
if there was a flac-users list i'd be asking these questions there, but anyway =) on windows, i've been using eac in secure mode and using "test & copy" to verify that the crc checksums match. invariably, i'll get one or two mismatches per album i rip, so i figure the checksum verification is a good thing despite the extra time. once i rip a cd, i want to forget

oggdec.exe not using album gain stdout option
This question is mainly directed at John Edwards, I believe. I'm attempting to use oggdec.exe in a batch conversion of ogg vorbis files for use on a portable player. I'm using the -o option to redirect output to the LAME encoder. So far so good. However, I also want to do volume leveling using the replaygain tags. If I specify track (radio) gain, everything works fine, however, when I

newbie questions re flac on win32 eac and id3v2
Firstly, a big thank-you to Josh for FLAC. Someone mentioned it in a post on Slashdot, so I came over to sourceforge for a look-see. This is just the sort of thing I've been looking for. Can anyone relate any general tips for using flac on Windows for the purpose of archiving cd's? If I can nail down a solid, easy-to-use process, I'm happy to write it up and contribute it to the
