flac portable players
I have a Cowon iAudio G3 and I really like it. You would probably
be looking for one with a hard drive. I haven't tried playing FLAC
files with my iAudio, but I play Ogg/Vorbis files all the time. In my
opinion, based solely on the G3, they make good quality players (with
a few software bugs, that they fix), with a good overall feature set.
I like the G3 as a flash-based player because it

Portable FLAC Players
Hi there,
I just wanted to inform you guys that there is currently a beta
Firmware for the "Cowon iAudio M3" in development that supports the
FLAC format.
I have tested some FLAC files that were encoded by jetAudio 6.06
(compression level 0, 4 and 8). I will try all compression ratios, but
I guess that they will all work. If anybody wants me to test a
specific encoder or program I would

Looking for player recommendations...
I'm looking for personal recommendations for low cost flash based
players which support Vorbis (speex and flac support would be nice,
but aren't mandatory). Solid support (no weird limits for low and high
bitrates) is required.
I'd be buying a fair quantity of them to give away as prizes and gifts.
I'd rather purchase players which have native Vorbis support rather
than buying

[PATCH 1/2] Update comparison.html
I cleaned up comparison.html, making the comparison more fair and
removing manufacturers that no longer have any new hardware
supporting a certain format. The table is more readable now too.

Well, it functions like any other Digital Audio Player. Take the iPod,
the iRiver iHp 120 and the Rio Karma to name just a few. These players
all have integrated 20 or 40

Asterisk Prompt
Hi List;
I read the following sentence:
"The CLI prompt is set with the ASTERISK_PROMPT UNIX
environment variable"
In the following link:
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/index.php
page=Asterisk+CLI+prompt
The question is: what is the ASTERISK_PROMPT UNIX
environment variable and where I can access it to
change it? Also where I can find information about it?

Hardware support
What's the current state of hardware support for Ogg Vorbis? Any decent
players out there? I have an iRiver iHP-120 and am thinking about upgrading,
any recommendations?

OTP?
Hello,
I was wondering where I might find more information about using OTP as
an authentication protocol with dovecot. In searching, I found a thread
from 2004, but not much information about how it has progressed from
then. I also saw some promising patches from mid-last year, which if I
had to guess are probably the addition of support for the SASL OTP
mechanism. Is this available in a

[sorta offtopic] Removing bad bytes from filenames
I'm moving my Ogg Vorbis collection off of my Linux server and onto my
laptop. I plan on using iTunes to play my collection, but, that's a
whole 'nother can of worms.
I'm having trouble moving my complete collection over because dbPowerAmp
(an application I used to love) made some dumb decisions about naming my
files. For example, in track/album/artist names that contained a

access users homes share
hey list,
we are currently migrating our users from novell to samba. now we have one problem: in novell we could give e.g. user1 access to users2 home share so he could modify, delete or add files on this share. in samba we defined a global homes share that is mapped on logon. so how can we give user1 the needed rights?
here is the definition of the homes share in smb.conf:

Asterisk and Polycom Soundpoint IP600
This Polycom phone seems to be one of the best on the market for sound
quality and features. I have seen on the list that some people have gotten
the IP 600 to work with Asterisk. Does anyone have the details of how to
get this working i.e. XML phone config files, and any thing else I might
need to know.
Thank You,
Chad Cowan

re-encode
Have some flac files, that I've been trying to re-encode again...
example:
abc.flac ( was coded at --fast ) and its huge
so,
flac -d --best abc.flac
or
flac --best abc.flac
or
flac --best abc.flac --force
NONE of these work, to re-encode the file into --best
file size has not change.
What is the correct command line to correctly re-encode a file to
--best (regardless) on what compress

opusenc constant quality setting
I'm a bit confused about VBR with Opus. I see that the default is VBR,
but I don't see any way to specify a quality setting. I can set a
target bitrate, but that's definitely not what I want; I want a constant
quality level, like "-q" in oggenc, and for the encoder to select
bitrates based on the desired quality.
For example, for playback through earbuds or laptop

Dynamic libraries
I am trying to write a dynamic linked library for R, in Pascal. (This
is to speed up the execution of a simulation that I am running in R.)
I know Pascal might not be the perfect language for this (C or Fortran
being more natural), but from what I have read I think it should
work. Though I should point out that I am a neophyte when it comes to
DLLs.
From R I want to hand a function in

bitrtate peeling and lossless compression
I just read some of the discussion on the list about 'bitrate peeling' and
remembered an interview of Monty that I have read recently. In it he says
that Vorbis uses MCDTs <sp> and that these are theoretically reversable.
And now, I learn that theoretically we can use bitrate peeling to make
smaller files from larger ones, and that leads to my question. Could I
theoretically

Layout Question w/ code from vendor library
I am new to Ruby on Rails in general and apologize if this question is
trivial and/or has been asked before ( my searches did not turn up any
threads ).
I am using the cookies function from actionpack which I have located in
my vendor/rails/actionpack directory.
Using:
cookies[:username] and cookies[:password]
from within a controller file works just fine, I am able to set and read
