compression ratio
hi
i was wondering if it's possible to tell me what the theoretical best
compression ratio the flac encoder can do, because i was wondering
what the future of flac will bring us. So this question is probably
best addressed to Josh: can we suspect much better compression ratio
in the future or is the encoder already at his *almost* peak
compression level.
thx in advance!

Spatial/Atmos on FLAC?
Hi,
are there any plans for FLAC to implement spatial audio? Or maybe Atmos on FLAC?

Hi,
But how can this be possibly lossless? You change the volume of the audio
tracks, so isn't this lossy or does the actual volume

FLAC support in Phatbox car audio system
For the interested, the Phatbox (a car audio system) now has
firmware to support FLAC files. I have a news bullet on the
FLAC site:
http://flac.sourceforge.net/news.html#20020213
This is the first hardware support for FLAC (more is coming)
and I think the first support of any non-proprietary lossless
audio format for any hardware. Kudos to Phatnoise for taking
the lead.

Is FLAC hardware independent?
Dear list,
We are investigating about some state-of-the-art
lossless audio codecs and their performance in terms of? rate and
compression ratio. Therefore, it is very important to us to know whether a
codec is hardware independent, i.e. if it produces the same output file
regardless of the hardware. Could you please tell me whether FLAC is
hardware independent?
Thank you very much in advance.

Questions: FLAC performance, compression ratio and extra documentation
Dear list,
I' m studying FLAC performance, and I'd like to know how much
compression can be achieved for different audio files.
1) It seems that
for nontonal sound (wideband noise), the compression factor is better
than for compound sound (tones + nontonal components),
which is typically 2. The reason for this result could be the following: the
LPC filter is more suitable for

Idea to possibly improve flac?
Hi folks!
Due to the fact that more and more users increasingly use MP3 < 320kbps as their source for encoding music, and publish it as flac files, I suggest that something is done in the flac encoder to possible avoid this.
My idea is kinda easy/stupid, but might work;
Implement a function that use a FFT to check if the input has frequencies > 16kHz, and informs the user that the file

Playing FLAC Files on Audi MMI
Hello,
I am hoping that perhaps you know the answer to my car audio question,
or can at least point me in the right direction. I own a 2013 Audi S4
that has the 3G-Plus Multi Media Interface (MMI) with the Bang & Olufsen
Sound System.
The MMI is able to playback lossy, compressed audio files (MP3, WMA and
AAC), but does not have native support for FLAC, ALAC, or WMA Lossless.

Idea to possibly improve flac?
Cool, thanks for all the great comments.
I think we agree now on that the "find mp3 before encoding" feature would not be a good idea to implement in the flac core. As Brian pointed out, it might be a better idea to create a program that automatically checks if a flac might have been an mp3 source.
My first suggestion was to use FFT, because I know that 128kbps mp3 have a low-pass

Way to decode specific channel(s) flac --decode?
Is there a way to decode user-specified channel(s) using the flac
command-line utility?
I tried:
$ flac --decode --output-name=1.wav --channels=1 input.flac
ERROR: --channels not allowed with --decode
Type "flac" for a usage summary or "flac --help" for all options
It appears that using the --channels option is simply disallowed with
--decode, or maybe I'm totally

Flac live audio stream
Hi, I am looking for a way to stream live audio using the FLAC audio format.
After some analysis myself I found various lossy alternatives, also in higher levels of kbps (like MP3 320 kbps). But I do want to challenge and be sure whether FLAC might be a possibility.
So I am specifically looking for an encoder and server solution supporting live streaming FLAC audio.
Do you have a

FLAC: headphones
hi flac list!
I'm not sure if this question can be asked here, but here you go (it's a
question for audiophiles only):
I encode CDDA tracks to FLAC and play them on my Pocket PC (PDA). I'm
looking for a high quality headphone to connect to my Pocket PC, but it must
be an in-ear one but not like these:

Some queries regarding FLAC
Dear FLAC team,
I have some fundamental doubts regarding FLAC encoder:
1) In FLAC encoder there is no option of specifying the bitrate. There is
something called compression-level. I believe that based on the nature of
input WAV file and compression-level chosen bitrate is coming into picture.
As such there is no user control on the bitrate. Is that correct?
2) In FLAC encoder I am also not

flac -- exhaustive model search vs. -A <*>?
what does the exhaustive model search do?
Does it try all of the functions listed under "-A" to find the 'best',
i.e. bartlett, bartlett_hann, blackman, blackman_har-
ris_4term_92db, connes, flattop, gauss(STDDEV), hamming, hann,
kaiser_bessel, nuttall, rectangle, triangle, tukey(P), welch.
Or is that something else?
I've been using the -e option for a while in

FLAC compression experiment
Hi FLAC team.
I feel I have found a super high compression way of FLAC. I have tested a 1 hour WAV file of 440HTZ with a 5,25,50,75,100 normalize volume preset. This dramatically changes the compression size of the end FLAC file even though the WAV file size is identical for all 5 WAV files. Only the volume is different. When you renormalize the WAV to its original volume the file is still 100%

FLAC: compressing data
hi
can the flac encoder be used to compress non-wave data? So suppose I rename
a data file to *.wav, can i compress it then using the flac encoder to make
it smaller?
just wondering if this is possible
