quick and easy way to convert id3-tagged flac to flac-tagged flac?
So before i knew better, i encoded a lot of my CDs in flac and added id3 tags (they worked, so great!). I know i've seen mention of others doing this; anyone gone to the trouble to write a tag conversion tool? Shouldn't be too tough, but i'd rather not reinvent the wheel. danno -- dan pritts danno@umich.edu 734-929-9770

newbie questions
I wish to add flac support to my Windows audio player so I wanted to ask a few questions. I rely on another lib for decoding/playing flac audio files so all I need to explicitly add support for is reading/writing flac metadata. 1st: I've downloaded libflac and have begun browsing. Is there a simple way to identify and carve out the pieces needed only for metadata i/o? Or will I have to

xmms plugin bug report - macOS 10.3, darwinports
Hi all - I've just finished building flac in the "darwinports" environment on MacOS 10.3.9. The port maintainer (i've cc'd him) had disabled the xmms plugin build. I wanted that, so I changed the portfile and built locally, yada yada. I've run into three problems, only two of which I've seen reported in the list archives here. 1) configure doesn't properly

FLAC: best ripping software?
Hi, I was hoping somebody could answer me this question:. I'm looking for the best audio CD ripper software, maybe somebody can tell me what you think is the best ripper available? The operating system it runs on is not important, I just want to know what's considered the best audio cd ripping software. In this way I want to make perfect input WAV files for the FLAC encoder. thanks in

Core Audio player for OS X?
There are a few flac players on OS X now, but none (at least none that i know of) seem to use Core Audio. So they all freak out if i try to play a 24/96 file. I was recently poking around with the Tiger X Code tools and there's a simple core audio player in there /Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/Services/AudioFileTools/ called afplay. how hard would it be to get this thing playing flac

Compression of existing FLAC files
Hope you can help, I'm quite new to this, so... I got a Squeezebox 3 and started ripping with Easy CD-DA Pro to FLAC, and set compression to 0 in the ignorant belief that compression might degrade the file. Now I've got over a Tb of files that I plan on migrating to larger drives. In the process, I'd like to apply an appropriate level of compression. Is there a tool and

rpm spec file for "fakejava"
Interestingly, i just posted to the list a similar SPEC file. look at the thread on CGI.pm. I've attached my spec file for "fakejava" as well. It was a lot of trial and error to make it work. None of the documentation I could find was for modern versions of RPM, and IIRC the documentation i did find for older versions was incorrect somehow. I think I had to specify a source

rsync cygwin hang
Hello, I'm having problems with rsync hanging on Cygwin. I read some archives of the list about this, but if I understood it correctly this problem had been solved? Mine prevails though. I'm running rsync 2.6.2 at both ends, Cygwin's version on the Windows end and backports.org's version on the other, Debian Woody, end. The one on the Cygwin end is running as a daemon, --daemon

rsync a raw device
Hi all - is there some magic flag i'm missing that will allow me to rsync a raw device? Not the dev entry, but the device itself? I have a filesystem (backuppc data store) that does not respond well to directory traversal due to an extremely high number of hard links (which generate lots of disk seeks), and probably would not work well with rsync anyway due to a large number of actual

Mixing SATA & PATA Drives
I suspect it''s probably not a good idea but I was wondering if someone could clarify the details. I have 4 250G SATA(150) disks and 1 250G PATA(133) disk. Would it cause problems if I created a raidz1 pool across all 5 drives? I know the PATA drive is slower so would it slow the access across the whole pool or just when accessing that disk? Thanks for your input. - Chris

Re: multiple core support
it actually is complicated. the libFLAC api is not suited to a multithreaded design because the i/o is stream-based, not file- based. flac(.exe) is the file-based wrapper around libFLAC that allows it to work on files. the way libFLAC buffers data is also impossible to parallelize without significantly changing the api. it would take a specialty file-based encoder using an independent frame

an rpm howto question
I am in a precarious spot.... I run centos 4.0. I upgraded my mod_perl RPM to mod_perl 2.0.1. CGI.pm 3.10 (3.05 comes with centos 4.0) fixes some namespace issues with mod_perl vs mod_perl 2.0.1. I need to upgrade to it to 3.10. Yet that file belongs to the perl rpm that comes with centos. What do people generally do in this type of situation? Do I need to compile a new perl just to upgrade

rsync and tunneling via ssh
Hi, I have setup a rsync server with a rsync running as a deamon, due to security rules I cannot open the rsync standard port (873) in the firewall. We have to tunnel rsync through ssh. On the client side, which is linux kernel 2.4 I have made the following script, but ssh -i /home/ifao/bin/traveltest -f -C -L 2211:cib.ifao.net:8730 cytric@localhost sleep 1000 rsync -auz --password-file=rsync.cib

aacraid monitoring tool?
I've got myself an Adaptec 2200 HW RAID card to play for couple of days. Tha card uses aacraid device driver. Seems to work nicely, however just wandering if there's a tool (prefferably CLI) for CentOS that can read out RAID configuration data, status of individual drives, maybe even manage (create/delete) RAID devices? Thanks for any and all pointers.
