RE: [Shorewall-users] SMTP outbound problem (fwd)
I think we should add an FAQ entry for tcp_ecn. I remember Tom giving a good description in one of his many responses and there is mention of it in the pptp page, but I could not find the response from Tom about different tcp stacks. Shorewall suggestions
Just a note to mention that I have been using the RC1 release at work for a simple one interface firewall. No problems that I have seen. We use Solaris, AIX, Tru64, and Linux in my group at the U of W. I know some IP filter package is available on Solaris and Tru64. On the Tru64 system you can configure an interface with a list of cidr notation subnets to accept or deny access. I reformatted

whitelist
I looked at the 1.3 whitelist documentation and realized that the ops example, while interesting in and of itself, did not do what I think a whitelist does. Back to symmetry, if a blacklist is a list of sites not allowed to connect in through the fire wall, maybe to a web server, for example, then a whitelist should be a list of machines that are allowed to access a service or services, again,

Clean way to monitor status of 'sshd' remotely?
I am trying to come up with a "clean" way to check if a machine is running 'sshd' so it can be included in a NetSaint config. Currently, there is a NetSaint plugin called "check_ssh", but it simply connects to port 22, looks for the SSH version response from the daemon, and then disconnects. This results in the syslog file where "auth" messages are sent in

Thanks Tom
Tom, Thanks for your great contribution to the community. Not only should you be proud of your product (best iptables configuration I have seen so far) and of your in-depth networking/routing/firewalling knowledge but most of all of your helpful dedication and kindness to other people which you have shown repeatedly on this list. We are all here indebted to you. Good luck to you and your family

Thanks Tom Dickson.... and the others
Hi: I?m sorry I didn?t answer before, but I just couldn?t, I was too busy at my job. Tom, I did as you suggest me but it was a surprise, I don?t have acccess to that web site!! I was not prompted for a password or any thing alike but it was prohibited from my server. Nevertheless my workstation could do it. I know you might be wondering: how come, but it?s simple. I have a RedHat server

astping crashes asterisk manager module
hi Just installed astping in Nagios (former netsaint), and it works fine - for some time. After several hours, the Asterisk manager module just stopped responding, and I had to restart to make it work Any idea what might cause this? Sorry - I don't have the log now. Is it possible to have asterisk log console output somewhere? roy -- Roy Sigurd Karlsbakk, Datavaktmester ProntoTV AS -

Samba 2.2.1a and named pipes
Can Samba write to named pipes ? I am using Netsaint/Nagios for system monitoring and the command file to write system commands to is implemented as a named pipe. I can write normal files to the directory but whenever I try and write to the pipe I get access denied. Thanks. ---------------------------- Jeff White Senior Systems Engineer Xelus, Inc. 1.3.2 Documentation
Ron and Steve, I am ready to begin the documentation changes for 1.3.2. Are you close to having any of your changes ready for release? If so, we can get those into CVS before I begin my changes -- if not, then I''ll go ahead and update CVS with the 1.3.2 material. Please let me know. -Tom -- Tom Eastep \ Shorewall - iptables made easy AIM: tmeastep \ http://www.shorewall.net

nagios command-plugins: unexpected token
Hi I just installed nagios et al[1] in my Centos-5.2 (x86). When I try to test the configuration file it fails[2] with the message "Unexpected token or statement(...)". The line is: command[notify-by-email]=/usr/bin/printf "$OUTPUT$" | /bin/mail -s '$SERVICESTATE$ alert for $HOSTALIAS$/$SERVICEDESC$' $CONTACTEMAIL$ But if I comment this line, then I got the same

Problem: Copying large amount of files to SAMBA Server. W2KError "file in use" for exe files
At the risk of stating the obvious but 2.2.3a is rather old - try updating to the latest stable 2.2.x series of Samba. After that you might want to look into the options relating to "Oplocks" >>I am wondering if anybody has expected the same problem before? The only idea i have is that this error occures because i have a lot of file and directory, chown, chmod directives in my

Docs - Structure Musings
IMHO, our big picture challenge is that multiple explanations for several topics are spread out over several different docs and pages One parameter is frequently discussed in four or more places (QSG, files reference pages, file comments, main documentation, etc.) That gives multiple perspectives, which can be good, but can also lead to at least the appearance, especially to a beginner, of
