Thank you. You're right ... my error ... I meant
to say 12 bytes (including the 2 bytes for VAD).
And it is 10ms/frame. No matter ... thank you for
the SPEEX specs. In terms of quality, what SPEEX
bit rate compares with G.729 at 8kbps data rate
please? Is there some reason why you chose the
20ms frame rate? Do you keep that same frame rate
for the different bit rates? The faster frame

Thank you Jean-Marc.
My understanding is that G.729 is a telephone
codec, so there must have been some reason why
its developers went to 10ms/frame. Do you know why that might be?
From a recent post on this list I saw somebody
talking about your decoded sample rate being
8KHZ/sec. and then he mentioned that being 160
bytes at 20ms/frame. That said, I take it that
your decoded samples are

Haven't done formal testing and it depends on whether it's G.729 or
G.729A. I'd

Speex, ACELP, G.729
Hello Jean-Marc:
I've been watching the speex development from its inception because I
and several Tech Startup Connection members have a very important
application for this voice encoding/decoding. Further, we are quite
familiar with ACELP as implemented in G.729. As far as I know Speex
is also ACELP ... yes/no?
Question ... what do you see as the advantages of ACELP compared to
MP3? I

I'm sorry but if G.729 used 12 bits/frame at 100 frames/second, it would
have a bit-rate of 1.2 kbps. G.729 actually uses 10

Windows app demonstrating speex playback?
I'm developing a small linux/speex-based audio streaming (VoIP-like) application, and am looking for a binary windows app that can play speex content (at least from a file, preferably from an IP data stream) out through the windows sound system. This would be very helpful as a test tool. Any recommendations? I'd prefer a binary as I don't have development environment available for

Hello Monty:
I'm OK with not continuing this on the Speex tech list. In fact, I've
deliberately responded off list to the various posters. I do think,
though, that your admonitions to be non political should go to both
sides ... that Jean-Marc founded Speex doesn't give him license to
denigrate other efforts. Thomas Leigh asked a perfectly legitimate
question and Jean-Marc's

Differences between ACELP and CELP.... Reloaded
And the main point of interest is the following: how much difference in
SPEEX terms would it be if it were developed with ACELP in mind? (not
that i would do an aSpeex codec implementing ACELP, just to know and
point my efforts)

Speex for TI MSP430 microcontroller - estimating CPU speed requirements?
Interested in building a speex codec (basically audio <-> speex <-> data
stream) using TI's small MSP430 microcontroller. Is there any way to
estimate feasibility based on CPU requirements? Example - speex is happily
encoding on an old Pentium-1 processor (166 MHz) using about half the CPU
(as reported under Linux); the TI microcontrollers are much slower yet
(8-16-25 MHz) and

How about if I sell you a copy of speex. Buy low, sell high seems like
a good capitalist plan, and then you could feel good about using Speex!

Hello Jean:
Big mistake!!
One of the three things that a supplier should never discuss is
politics ... that's business 101.
Speex may be a very good product, but we will never use it because of
the politics that you espouse ... some of us out here believe
strongly in the free market. And we also know that monopolies can't
exist because entrepreneurs will always exploit the

I am concerned if the TMS320F28335 as a whole can

One more from me and I suppose a retort by you

if we can keep this discussion objective.
I've had enough life experience to have seen and
heard the mistakes you've made many times. Point by point:

of years ago because of a serious intent to use

Simple example of decoding streaming audio realtime?
Conrad,
That's exactly what I was looking for. I just got finish trying several attempts at porting libfishsound to XCode/CocoaTouch land but am facing dependency issues on the other xiph libraries. (liboggz, libvorbis, libflac, etc.) Rest assured I know what the issues are and how to address them. I am at a fork here. I can either port the bulk of the xiph libraries to XCode or continue on

regarding CELP/ACELP/others patentes
Hi All,
First of all, I'm sorry if my question is offtopic on this list. In such
case please ignore this post and/or contact me directly. I'm asking my
questions there because I feel you had similar problem before starting
developing Speex.
My story:
my friend developed 3gpp content creator and he would distribute it in
binary form.
But there is problem with AMR licensing (the terms

No. Speex is CELP (Code-excited linear prediction), but not ACELP

1. I really HATE POLITICS.
2. I think Speex is a great solution to the problem of compressing human speech.
3. Good heavens people can we please stop throwing around words like
communist and socialism.
4. Government funded research has done a lot for the US and other
countries. Going all the way back to the NACA cowling and airfoils
that where vital in the development of airliners and the fighters

replacing ACELP encoding with speex
Hi all,
I'm to hit about aprox the same encoding settings (ie bitrate, filesize,
quality) with talk radio shows that are currently encoded with Real
Producer in 16kbit acelp (maybe cs-acelp).
Currently 2 hours of talk radio encoded in a .rm container yields about
16.3 meg file. With speex in wideband vbr I'm getting very good quality
results, but with a larger filesize of 19.1 meg.

Hello Mr Loebel,

Speex is a not business, nor is Jean-Marc selling a product. The
Xiph.Org Foundation, of which Jean-Marc is a member with his Speex
project, is a non-profit organization.

If you would like to pay for a special US$1000 Speex license,
