Custom kinit to find device by "label"
I need to reliably boot a server from a USB device. Since USB device ordering can be unpredictable, I wrote a simple early-userspace "init" program to find the root FS on the correct USB device & partition. I have "labeled" the root ext2 FS on the USB drive, and the program searches for the label by examining the bytes at a specific offset from the beginning of the

[PATCH] Unsnarl missing_below/dry_run logic.
The generator can skip a directory's contents altogether due to --ignore-non-existing, a daemon exclude, or a mkdir failure. On a --dry-run, the generator can also note the missingness of a directory while still scanning its contents. These two scenarios were conflated using a single set of missing_below/missing_dir variables in combination with transient increments in dry_run; this caused

[PATCH] kill 2.4 dev_t vs kdev_t crap
The difference between kdev_t and dev_t in 2.4 is rather theoretical, no need to clutter up the source for it. create_dev and raid
Yet another one of those "it would make sense it" posts. Currently, create_dev in do_mounts.c simply unlinks the device and recreates it. This doesn't seem right. If /dev/hda3 has already been created, by some early-userspace app (udev), there's no need to unlink or even parse the name again. Now, when talking about simple block devices, this doesn't make much of a

[patch] skip existing md devices
The following patch will ignore already configured md devices in kinit. The rationale is that, if an md device already exists, it was previously assembled by some other tool (e.g. mdadm) and should remain there. Currently, kinit removes it and attempts to recreate it, which can cause all sorts of issues, especially in the situation that, the md device is further encrypted and/or is an lvm

plug leaks in febootstrap
Hi Rich, I ran coverity against febootstrap's head and it spotted four leaks. This fixes them. The first patch plugs three. The second attempts to make the add_link function do what I'm guessing it was intended to do. As is, it was a no-op. >From 7c2ff55613598a1295e213cef36600ad61da7ed6 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Jim Meyering <meyering at redhat.com> Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2012

propagate atimes with rsync-2.6.6 (fwd)
Dear Martin Pool. We regularly use rsync for making backups of our file systems but we have noticed that the atimes are not transferred with the files and are also always updated on the sender's side. Therefore, we have created a modified version of rsync based on rsync-2.6.6 protocol version 29 which transfers the access times with the transferred files and also allows to preserve the access

improved atime patch
I posted a patch a few days ago that adds copying of atime. At that time, it was just enabled with -t/--times. After some time, we have figured out that that choice might not have been the best. Here's a new version of the patch (relative to CVS) that adds -A/--copy-atime instead. It also includes a test case. Any feedback on this patch and/or the previous one that I posted?

Rsync 2.6.9pre2 tries to read ACLs of nonexistent files
Dear rsync people, Today I tried to back up my computer using rsnapshot with the RPM version of rsync-acl 2.6.9pre1 that I built. I tried twice, and both times, rsync encountered some kind of assertion failure. I was trying to reproduce the crash with rsync-acl 2.6.9pre2 and noticed a different bug (described below); when I have a chance, I will go back and investigate the crash further. Rsync

[Compile Issue] netcat.c on HP NonStop
Greetings, I am porting the openssh-portable 6.8 release to the HP NonStop (NSE) platform. Prior versions were no real problem, with minor tweeks. However, with the inclusion of regress/netcat.c, which depends on arpa/telnet.h, we have an issue. Unfortunately, the platform does not have this file, nor anything like it - telnet is done rather differently. We do have a version of netcat (0.7.1
