Samba vs Windows - File sharing in a domain setting
Hi Louis, The idea I had with this thread is to just get an honest comparison between Windows and Samba when it comes to file sharing needs in the Windows world, the missing Windows Search capability was just an example to get the discussion going. If I understand your reference correctly, there is a solution, compatible with Apple's Spotlight, to index files on a Samba server using

Samba vs Windows - File sharing in a domain setting

But i do know if you setup as shown and you add a webpage to the server, that makes is also usable for Windows users to search. There was some work done in the area

Spotlight configuration trouble
Hi Louis, I used your excellent packages but also tried building from source. I?m trying to get Tracker working. Elasticsearch was simpler to get going but it doesn?t really suite the use case due to limitations in fscrawler. I actually created the mdssvc user but also tried directly under root once the dedicated user didn?t work. The problem might be somewhere in D-Bus configuration but I

Let me guess. You accessing your server like : \\servername\netlogon of \\servername\sysvol Well thats protected by windows these these days. Try with \\servername.domain.tld\netlogon or \\servername.domain.tld\sysvol Does that work? Yes, There is a whole chaper of this on the list somewhere.. Best is to read howto override this. https://adsecurity.org/?p=1405 and for you

AD DC in a container: NTP
I’m currently trying to install a new (primary) AD DC in a Linux container. It seems to me that being in a container, the DC is easier to maintain and backup than on bare metal, and I prefer a container over a VM for performance reasons. If the container setup will prove to be too much of hassle, I’ll switch to a VM, though. The first issue I’m facing is time synchronization. An container cannot

Spotlight configuration trouble
I?m trying to setup Spotlight with Tracker (2.3 from Ubuntu repo) backend in Ubuntu 20.04 and Samba 4.12.7. I?ve followed the wiki closely but every time I try to search I get this in the logs: [2020/10/02 10:43:42.078242, 0] ../../source3/rpc_server/mdssvc/mdssvc_tracker.c:403(mds_tracker_search_start) mds_tracker_search_start: no connection to Tracker [2020/10/02 10:43:42.079897, 0]

Permission Issues with GPO
Here are my (little) view regarding shares accesses. I write that to clarify things. And it could really be of-topic as Louis seems to have gave solution. There are 2 levels of authorisation for accessing shares: the share level and FS level. For Sysvol I would keep everyone or replace it by "authenticated users" in paranoid mode as the latter refuse non-authenticated users. They are

I have already added a Win10 machine to a domain, where only Win7 clients were joined before that. I have managed this domain from Win7 only, so far. Therefore I believe that e.g. the Windows Update policy is not fit for

Wsearch
Hi Noel, As we discussed on the list, I busy getting the bits and pieces in place to be able to test your windows search work. I am running all my stuff on Debian Bullseye, with Samba code in 3 lxc-containers. Two are for the DCs, one is the fileserver. Everything is managed by Ansible code, I try to avoid manual changes to my environment(s) as much as possible. Generally manual changes are

Permission Issues with GPO
I was experiencing problems with Group Policy Objects. The Windows Event Viewer spits out so many different errors, most of them less than helpful, so Iwas seeking help here with some of those messages. In the end, and after many hours and even days of researching this problem, I seem to have pin-pointed the main issue to some simple permission irregularities that I don't know how to

Viktor, thanks again! Now that I did this (added the Win10 1511 ADMX files to the central store), I probably will have to recreate the policies that will be applied to Win10 machines, right? Is this your first-and-only DC ever for that domain? Did you try to re-join the Win clients with deleting the client objects after the 'leave'?
